Lyn has a piece of hand made linen on which is embrodiered "Manufactured prior to 1815.  By Eleanor McGuire".  This linen was found in the home of Eva (Barkley) Swan after her death in 1968.  Said to have emigrated to Ohio in 1801.

Jacob WOODRUFF was born 1818. He died 26 Jan 1914.

The manuscript states Jacob born 1878 and his sister Sarah b 1821---an obvious error since his mother is born  1793 and died 1877.  I chose the 1818 birthdate--as the likely one, but he would be 96 when he died. Hmmm.

See also: Descendents of Eleanor McGuire - compiled by Lyn Swan EASwan@netscape.net  She puts his birthdate abt 1813. Age 51 in 1870 census.  1870 living with parents. (that would be consistent with 1818)

“I do not know whether our two John's are related or not but I do not think  that your John had a son. In 1782 enumerations there were 4 Hartley's 2 John's , a Hugh and a Thomas. I think perhaps my John was probably a cousin to yours and a son of either Thomas or Hugh.I really canot prove any of this. My John had 7 in the family and yours had 8 and from what I can surmise they are both correct and had no other children after that.

In 1793 my John Hartley owned 160 a. on Mill Creek and sold it to Samuel Hague. both of Hampshire Co.  VA W.KELLY “ <vkelly@mindspring.com>

Mrs. HARTLEY died before Jun 1783. She married John HARTLEY in Of Hampshire Co., VA..

710 birth for John Hartley calculated thus:
Eleanor had 8 of her 10 children when her father, John Hartley made his will in 1783. Eleanor's son Cornelius was b 23 Nov 1773.  He is listed as child #4 in his grandfather's will.  From these two dates, the other sibling birthdates were approximated.

1783 June 5:  Hampshire Co will of JOHN HARTLEY probated 3-9-1784.
W. dec'd.  6 ch., l-Elizabeth, 2-Ann Harden,  3-Hannah Pearsall, 4-ELEANOR HOUGLAND'S  8 children Mary, Henry, Hannah, CORNELIUS, Macey, Margaret, Eleanor and Ann HOUGLAND; 5-Mary Wilson, 4 ch., Dan, William, James and Ruth Wilson;  6-Margaret.  Exec.,CORNELIUS HOUGHLAND and gr.son, Dan Wilson, son of Mary Wilson.  Wit., Jacob Slagle, Joseph House, James Doughtery.     Hampshire Co WV Book 2 pg 90.   Also Sage & Jones p 118.

So Eleanor was md with 8 children by 1783.

They had the following children:

  F i
Elizabeth HARTLEY was born about 1741 in Of Hampshire Co., VA..

1783 June 5:  Hampshire Co will of JOHN HARTLEY probated 3-9-1784.

named one of his executors.  The 8 children of Cornelus and Eleanor
(Hartley) Hougland were mentioned:  Mary, Hannah, CORNELIUS, Macey,
Margaret, Eleanor, and Ann. At the time of the probate of the will, John
Hartley's wife was deceased.

Six of John Hartley's children were named in the document:
Elizaabeth, Ann Harden, Hannah Pearsall, Eleanor Hougland, Mary Wilson

SUMMARY OF CORNELIUS HOUGLAND
(Short version.  6 Jan 2001; more details below the Summary.)

Maybe our line had 3 generations of CORNELIUS HOUGLANDS

1741: possible birth date of CORNELIUS HOUGLAND.

1769 Jan 13.  CORNELIUS HAGLEN - JOHN PEARSAL,  " Near the Yough" Bill of Sale.  1787-(recorded?) Book A p. 149, of  FAYETTE CO, PA GRANTOR INDEX, SLFHL film # 857787.

1769 Bef Apr: Survey nullifies purchase of JOHN PEARSALL. He complains his land improvement, purchased of CORNELIUS HOUGLAND, made null by survey. (Fayette Co.PA?) (JOHN PEARSALL=HANNAH HARTLEY,sis to ELEANOR HOUGLAND.)

1773 Nov 23:CORNELIUS HOUGLAND,son of CORNELIUS HOUGLAND born.

1778 Sep: CORNELIUS HOUGLAND drafted for Rev War.  Hires substitute.

1778 Nov 16: Lease between Lord Fairfax, CORNELIUS HOUGLAND, ELEANOR HOUGLAND his wife, and HENRY HOUGLAND his son, Lot 20 on Pattersons Creek.

1782-1796: CORNELIUS HOUGLAND in Hampshire Co tax lists and census. (Apparently Patterson's Creek.)

1783 June 5: Hampshire Co. will of JOHN HARTLEY names his dau ELEANOR HOUGLAND, and her 8 children incl CORNELIUS. (Her husband)CORNELIUS HOUGLAND named as one of Exec's.

1784: census lists CORNELIUS HOUGLAND as a neighbor of JOHN STALLCUP, MARK HARDIN and MARY WILSON. (JOHN STALLCUP probable father of ANNA; MARK HARDIN'S "wife,ANN" probable sister of CORNELIUS HOUGLAND; and MARY WILSON probable sister of CORNELIUS HOUGLAND.

1790: CORNELIUS HOUGLAND's land warrant is signed "Corns Hogland Junr" indicating his father was CORNELIUS HOUGLAND also.  Proof enough there were three CORNELIUS HOUGLANDS?

1791 Nov 12: CORNELIUS HOUGLAND receives patent on his land.

1796: CORNELIUS & ELEANOR HOUGLAND + THOS & HANNAH (HOUGLAND)MCGUIRE leave Hampshire Co., (intending to meet 23 yr old CORNELIUS HOUGLAND & w-ANNA.) Ended up staying in Pittsburg until spring of 1797. Met up then with young CORNELIUS HOUGLAND at Williamstown.

1798:  CORNELIUS HOUGLAND dies at Williamstown (probably near Hougland's Run in Wood Co.) Mrs. HOUGLAND (ELEANOR) returns to VA.

CORNELIUS HOUGLAND -1741-TIMELINE (the long version.)

SOUTH BRANCH and PATTERSON CREEK,  HAMPSHIRE CO. VA   to
Pittsburg, PA  to  WILLIAMSTOWN, WOOD CO, WEST VA
Carol Minson, Dec 31, 2000 last revision.

Keep in mind there may be three generations of Cornelius Houglands.
Abt 1710 Cornelius Hougland
Abt 1741 Cornelius Hougland=Eleanor Hartley  The one we deal with here.)
1773-Cornelius Hougland

When did Cornelius first come to South Branch?  And when did he move over to Patterson's Creek? The answer may be in the following data.

(No date given.)  Survey on Wappacomo, South Branch of Potomoc.  Surveys numbered by Lord Fairfax from 1-66 (beginning at source and numbering toward the Potomac) were held at some time by the following:
#16 Job Pearsol;  #20 CORNELIUS HOAGLAND;  #23 John Forman & RICHARD HOUGLAND;   #25 William Foreman & Benjamin Foreman;  #26 William & John Foreman;  #27 URIAH BLUE & RICHARD BLUE;  #30 Welton & Blue;  #32 John Wright, George Washington & R.M. Marsh;  #46 John Ross, THOMAS LAWSON;
#49 MCGUIRE;   #64  Job Pearsoll.  Source: pg 63 Sage & Jones.

(Comment:  The people in the survey listed on pg 63 are different than the 1782 census list.  I think the 1782 census list are  Patterson Creek people.  The 1782 list included CORNELIUS HOUGLAND.)

1769 Jan 13.  CORNELIUS HAGLEN - JOHN PEARSAL,  " Near the Yough" Bill of Sale.  1787-(recorded?) Book A p. 149, of  FAYETTE CO, PA GRANTOR INDEX, SLFHL film # 857787.

Bef Apr 1769:  "John Pearsall enters a caveat (Oct 18, 1781) against the acceptance of a survey made to John Augusta Washington upon an Order of Survey, #1020, ent'd 3rd Ap'l 1769, alledging he has a prior right to the said land by an Improvement purchased of Cornelius Hogeland.  [See Judg't of Court Nisi prius at Union Town in favour of Washington.]"   PA Archives 3rd Series, Vol 2, p. 627.  (Apparently this Cornelius Hogeland was in Fayette Co., PA before he came to VA.   Was this Cornelius the father of Cornelius b abt 1841?)

1773 Nov 23: Cornelius Hougland born, probably Patterson's Creek, Hampshire CO. VA.  A lease between Lord Fairfax and Cornelius Hoghland dated May 11, 1779, indicates Cornelius Hougland had lived at Patterson's Creek for at least 5 years.  The lease states, "Cornelius Hoghland and Eleanor his wife, and Henry, his son, of Hampshire CO. VA, Lot 20 on Pattersons Creek; 25 pounds in current in hand paid as "back rent" for 328 acres.  "Rent henceforth would be 5 pounds sterling each year."
(For what reason would a son be mentioned?)
(John Hartley's 1783 will indicates this Cornelius Hougland b 1773 is s/o Cornelius & Eleanor.)

1778 Sep: Cornelius Hogland was drafted (abt age 37?).  He hired Wm Critchfield as a substitute.  Wm (who was from Patterson's Creek) marched from Hampshire Co. VA under Maj. Van Meter and Capt. Johnston. . . to Beesontown. . to Ft. McIntosh. . then built Ft. Lawrence. . .20 Dec 1778 verbally discharged.  Joshua Critchfield, recollects his brother William hiring as a substitute for Cornelius Hoagland of Hampshire Co., VA where he then resided for six months.  He, (Wm) served in McIntosh's campaign in 1778 or 1779.  Source: VA Rev, Pension Ap for both Wm and Joshua

1778 Nov 16:  Lease between Lord Fairfax Proprietor of the Northern Neck of VA and CORNELIUS HOGHLAND, ELEANOR HOGHLAND  his wife and HENRY HOGHLAND, HIS SON for Lot 20 on PATTERSON'S CREEK, Hampshire Co.328 acres.  D.B. book 5, pg 339-341. 25 pounds in current in hand paid as "back rent" for 328 acres.  "Rent henceforth would be 5 pounds sterling each year."  So it appears that Houglands had lived on that land for at least 5 years---probably more.  Henry is probably over 21. (Was Henry the one who was scalped?) (I have this 2 1/2 pg. doc.)

1779 May 11: A land record (renewal of lease) between Lord Fairfax and Cornelius Hoghland  of Hampshire CO. VA

1781 Oct 18: Land Office- Judge at Union Town in favor of Washington. Sounds like John Pearsall purchased land which had been improved by Cornelius Hogeland.  He bought that improvement from Hogeland and then a survey was ordered in 1769 and Pearsall was aced out in favor of Washinton.  (c.m. has document.)
(This Pearsall is the husband of Hannah (Hartley), sister to Eleanor w/o Cornelius.)

1782: Cornelius Hougland Hampshire Co Enumerations: 10 white, 0 black - 13 code (list of Okey Johnson)

Cornelius Hougland (Hoglin, Hoagland) appears in Hampshire Co. Census enumerations and/or tax lists for the years 1782,83,84,85,86,87,88,1790-1796. Okey Johnson is the enumerator in 1782-1786.  Okey Johnson's list seems to be Patterson Creek.

1783 June 5:  Hampshire Co will of JOHN HARTLEY probated 3-9-1784.  W. dec'd.  6 ch., l-Elizabeth;  2-Ann Harden;   3-Hannah Pearsall; 4-ELEANOR HOUGLAND'S  eight children- Mary, Henry, Hannah, CORNELIUS, Macey, Margaret, Eleanor and Ann HOUGLAND;  5-Mary Wilson, 4 ch., Dan, William, James and Ruth Wilson;
6-Margaret.  Execs.,CORNELIUS HOUGHLAND and gr.son-Dan Wilson, & dau Mary Wilson.  Wit., Jacob Slagle, Joseph House, James Doughtery.     Hampshire Co WV Book 2 p. 90.  (Copy of will-cm)  Also Sage & Jones p. 118.

(Note: Eleanor was md with 8 children by 1783 will.  This is helpful in determining ages of her siblings and her children.)

1783 Oct 14:  WARRANT  #19887 of 100 acres at Patterson Creek for Cornelius Hougland issued.    (This date & data is on a land warrant dated 16 Nov 1790.  c.m. has the 1790 document.)

1784 Mar 9: John Hartley's will probated.

1784: Census Hampshire Co.  Cornelius Hougland 9 whites, 1 dwelling, 1 other dwelling.
1784 John Stallcup  (four doors away) 11 free whites, 1 dwelling, 1 other dwelling.  (Stallcup's not in 1782 census.) This census taken by Okey Johnson.  JOHN STALCUP, MARK HARDIN, and MARY WILSON are very close to Cornelius on the list.

1788 Sep 11: "Cornelius Hogeland is appointed surveyor of the road from the Two Mile Tree to William Rannell's and is ordered that all the tithables on the North Branch below JACOB SLAGLE'S  and all the tithables on Turner's run below Thomas Emmersons including those on Patterson's Creek work the said road under him and that he cause the same to be cleared and kept in good order."  (Jacob Slagle is one of witnesses to John Hartley's will Jun 1783.)

"John Kimberlin. . .the road from Patterson Creek to Two Mile Tree and through Frankford and from John Jones's line to JOHN HARDINS line and it is ordered that all tithables in the said town of Frankford including those on Seller's land work the road under him and that he cause the same to be cleared and kept in good repair."
Hampshire  Co Minute Book.

1790 Oct 22:  WARRANT entered for Cornelius Hogland  assigne of Matthew Rust Abstract of Land in Hampshire Co adjoining the land he now lives on and the land of Benj Litchfield on the waters of  Patterson Creek. signed "CORN HOGLAND JUN!" Seven pages of warrants,  p. 333-339,  have three "Cornelius Hogland JUNR" signatures.  SO! Cornelius Hougland, b probably abt 1741, is a JUNIOR!)

1790 Nov 16: Survey warrant #19887, 100 acres on Patterson Creek for "Corns. Hogland Junr.";
1790 Nov 16: Survey for warrant #19887,  "Corns Hogland Junr";
1790 Nov 16: Another Survey for said warrant "Cornelius Hogland Junr".
(Note: On a previous lease dated 1778 Nov 16  he made "his mark of "CH".
So he did not write his signature.  Nor was there a  "Junr" there.)
1790 Nov 22: "Survey for Jacob Flake. . .near a late Survey of Cornelius Hogland."
His signature is "Corns Hogland".

1791 Nov 12: CORNELIUS HOGLAND Land Grant-100 acres Patterson Cr.
Book 6 p. 80; Sims p 197.  (cm has document.)

1791 Nov 12: Cornelius Hogeland PATENT on land in  Hampshire Co VA (probably the 100 acres on Patterson Creek.)

1782-1796: Cornelius Hougland (Hoglin, Hoagland) appears in Hampshire Co. Census enumerations and/or tax lists for the years 1782,83,84,85,86,87,88,1790-1797.  Okey Johnson is the enumerator for the years 1782-1786. This may help determine where Cornelius was living.

1796 Mar 31: Young Cornelius Hougland (b 1773) md Anna Stallcup Hampshire Co., VA.

1796 fall:  They  (young Cornelius & Anna) "left Hampshire Co. VA in fall of 1796, came to Williamstown, Wood Co VA by way of Clarksburg with one horse and 30 head of cattle.  They expected to meet the John Hougland and McGuire families.  But they were not there.
Because of illness and the closing of the river, the Houglands and McGuires stayed in Pittsburgh until the spring of 1797.  (Young) Cornelius selected a location on a small stream, below Valley Mills, Wood Co, West VA which still bears the name of HOUGLANDS RUN where he built a camp or cabin and managed to winter the cattle on pea vine brouse and corn that he got from Mr. Blennerhasset below Parkersburg and of Isaac Williams and Tomlinsons of Williamstown. Source: PALMER TWP HISTORY, 1888, unpub-- also HZ Williams p 711; also History of Wood Co. WV, Don F. Black, 1975.

1796 and 1797: Hampshire Co. tax lists Cornelius Hougland.

1797 Spring:  John and Eleanor Hougland and McGuire family meet Cornelius and Anna. HFH.  (Likely  John's name was "CORNELIUS JOHN"-This would be the Cornelius b abt 1841.)

1797 June:  Mary Elizabeth-"Polly," Cornelius & Anna's first child was born 1797 in Williamsport, Wood Co., VA. Source:  Polly H. McGinnis Biography in THE FAMILY OF MAGENNIS,  p. 212.    Also, Hougland Family Hist= HFH

1798:  "JOHN (Cornelius?) HOUGLAND, son of old Cornelius . . . reached the Ohio River at Williamstown. He died there and Mrs. Hougland returned to VA." HFH.
(He probably died near Hougland's Run, Wood Co, VA. now WV.)

(Didn't I see "Eleanor Hougland" in a West VA Estates Settlement book at LA Libe with an early 1800 date on it???  Recheck 975.4  J73 pg 10.)

1798 Dec 23:  Margaret  #2 child of Cornelius & Anna, b 1798, Williamsport.  HFH

The following is a somewhat garbled account from HFH:
1799: JOHN (Cornelius?) HOUGLAND'S widow, (Eleanor?), returns to Hampshire Co. VA "taking with her the two youngest children -- John and a little girl.  John's (Cornelius?)  son Henry went up to KY and to IN and his sister, Mrs. Hardin, went to KY.  One daughter of John's (Cornelius?) md William Kerfoot and had a son William and another daughter was Mrs. Alexander-and another son Cornelius with his sister Hannah is the last of John's(Cornelius?)  family.  We have the record only of Cornelius and Hannah.  Hannah was the older, but Cornelius's family so much larger that we give his first.  Hannah had married Thomas McGuire and they came with John to the ----r---and came int-his with Cornelius or at the time-that Cornelius came. . ."  HFH.

(Would Henry have gone to Tippicanoe Co., Indiana?  Elza Hougland lived there in 1828 after his Dad died.)

1797, 98, 99: Cornelius (young), is listed as tithed in Williamsport according to HISTORY OF WOOD CO. WV by Don F. Black, 1975, Vol.1.

1800 Mar 4 or May 19: Cornelius Hogeland of Wood Co VA  for $100 sells land in Hampshire Co VA (received by patent Nov 12 1791) to Josiah Beall. Book 12, p 227, Hampshire Co deeds.-(Daveda Bundy's research).

1800 Dec 29:  Ruth, Cornelius & Anna's #3 child was also born in Williamsport. HFH

1801 Spring: Widow ELEANOR HOUGLAND died in Hampshire Co, VA.

1801 Spring:   "Cornelius lived in Williamsport (Williamstown?)  till spring of 1801 when he moved to Barlow and settled on lot 1/2 mile west of Barlow Village."  Source: PALMER TWP HISTORY, 1888, unpub.

1803 Sep 6: Cornelius Hougland is executor of his father's will in Wood Co. VA.
(We need this will.)

PALMER HISTORY, an unpublished 7 paged history of that township, by Lydia Palmer,1881, of Browns Mills, Wash Co OH,  pg 6:  "In the early days, the Hougland family had suffered severely by the Indians in their
raids in the valley of VA.  An Uncle of Cornelius gave his entire time to the services of the Commonwealth of VA for the protection of their homes.  . . He was twice taken by the Indians, tomahawked, scalped and
left for dead, but recovered again, and joined once more in the service. He was taken prisoner the third time, and was then taken to one of their towns in Indiana,  stuck full of pine faggots and burnt at the stake. The
place was visited by ELZA, LEWIS  & DAVID HOUGLAND, when they went west."  (CM comment: That visit possibly abt 1828.  Elza was 21, Lewis was 16, and David was 14 in 1828.  Their father, Cornelius died 1818. Their mother died in 1824.)

See "OTHER HOUGLAND'S OF VA."
------------------------------------------------------------------------

JOHN HOUGLAND is mentioned as the father of Cornelius Hougland b1773 in the Hougland Family History.

It might have been Robert Simpson who suggested that the father of Cornelius Hougland b 1773 was John Hougland,  probably based on HFH.  HFH states  John was the son of an earlier Cornelius who with a son, Henry, received land in 1765 from Lord Fairfax.  This earlier Cornelius named two of his children Henry and John (who became the father of Cornelius b 1773).    John in turn, named his 3 sons Henry, Cornelius, and John. These 3 boys had four sisters as well.

It may be that I just can't get a handle on the above paragraph.  To me the documents listed above do not seem to support this "John" theory.

For example, the 1783 will of John Hartley says "Cornelius Hougland, husband of his dau Eleanor Hartley" and the children of Cornelius and Eleanor (Hartley) HOUGLAND are named: Mary, Henry, Hannah, CORNELIUS, Macey, Margaret, Eleanor and Ann."  This is documented evidence that the parents of Cornelius Hougland b 1773 in Hampshire Co VA were Cornelius and Eleanor (Hartley) Hougland.

Additionally, the Cornelius b abt 1741 has his name  signed on three land records:
Nov 16 1790-land warrant #19887  "Corns. Hogland Junr.";
Nov 16 1790- Survey for warrant #19887  "Corns Hogland Junr";
Nov 16 1790-Another Survey for said warrant  "Cornelius Hogland Junr".

As far as I can see, "Corns. Hogland Junr" must have been the father of Cornelius b 1773, unless the latter at age 17 signed for his father.

Daveda Bundy stated in her mid 1980's research:
"Whether Cornelius' father was John or Cornelius, it is thought that the Houglands came to VA from the Amwell, NJ area (Sommerset Co.)  In tracing them there, we find at least 5 Cornelius Houglands and several
John Hougland's who migrated to VA, southern PA and KY.  Sorting them out has proved impossible to date."

(We should try sorting those Cornelius's by date.  Perhaps some would thus be eliminated .)

THERE IS MORE ABOUT CORNELIUS HOUGLAND IN THE HOUGLAND FAMILY HISTORY, as well as the PALMER HISTORY OF 1888.  Both are unpublished copies in my possession.

Mrs. James (Mary) Yost, Box 36, Barlow, OH 45712. lived in the Hougland home and had three children while she lived there.  She too is a descendant of Cornelius, but did not know that when she lived in that home.
Her letter of Jul 24, 1986:  "My dad's grandfather, Doctor Vincent Smith. .. dad is 94 and very hard of hearing."  (He was born 1892?)  She said John Hougland went to visit relatives in Pittsburgh on way to OHIO.

----------------------------------------------------------

Article by Mary G. Yost (copy in my files) lists his father as John Houghland

Eleanor HARTLEY [Parents] was born about 1747. She died 1801 in Hampshire Co, , VA. Eleanor married Cornelius HOUGLAND about 1766 in Of Hampshire Co, VA..

THERE IS MUCH MORE ABOUT CORNELIUS HOUGLAND IN THE HOUGLAND
FAMILY HISTORY, as well as the PALMER HISTORY OF 1888.  Both were
unpublished. (copies in my possession.)
-------------------------------------------
Eleanor had 8 of her 10 children when her father, John Hartley made his will in 1783.

W.dec'd.  6 ch., l-Elizabeth, 2-Ann Harden,  3-Hannah Pearsall, 4-ELEANOR HOUGLAND'S  8 children Mary, Henry, Hannah, CORNELIUS, Macey, Margaret, Eleanor and Ann HOUGLAND; 5-Mary Wilson, 4 ch., Dan, William, James and Ruth Wilson;  6-Margaret.  Exec.,CORNELIUS HOUGHLAND and gr.son, Dan Wilson, son of Mary Wilson.  Wit., Jacob Slagle, Joseph House, James Doughtery.     Hampshire Co WV Book 2 pg 90.   Also Sage & Jones p 118.

So Eleanor was md with 8 children by 1783.

--------------------------------------------
1790: The following names are from list of Okey Johson, census taker. Of his 37 families, all presumably lived on Patterson's Creek or perhaps South Branch of Potomac.  These families are probably interrelated.  They are listed close together:
Cornelius Hougland, John Stalcup, Mark Hardin, and Thomas Lawson.  Also Moses Lawson, James Lawson and Richard Lawson.
Okey Johnson's code # on other tax listings is "11".

On 1782 enumeration list Okey Johnson's code # is 13. The 1782 enumeration is listed alphabetically. Of the above 1790 listing, Cornelius Hogeland,  Mark Hardin, and Thomas Lawson all have "13".
(John Stalcup does not appear in Hampshire Co until 1784. No other Lawson's listed in 1784.)

John Hartley (Jr?) is on the 1790 census list of David Mitchell, whose list follows Okey John's, immediately. John Hartley is also on David Mitchell's list in 1782. This indicates they are living in same location.

Lydia Palmer,1881, of Browns Mills, Wash Co OH,  pg 6:  "In the early
days, the Hougland family had suffered severely by the Indians in their
raids in the valley of VA.  An Uncle of Cornelius gave his entire time to
the services of the Commonwealth of VA for the protection of their
homes.  . . He was twice taken by the Indians, tomahawked, scalped and
left for dead, but recovered again, and joined once more in the service.
He was taken prisoner the third time, and was then taken to one of their
towns in Indiana,  stuck full of pine faggots and burnt at the stake. The
place was visited by ELZA, LEWIS  & DAVID HOUGLAND, when they went
west."(This was after their mother, Anna Stallcup's death in 1824.)

1773 Nov 23  Cornelius Hougland born.   Probably Patterson's Creek.

1778 Nov 16:  Lease between Lord Fairfax and CORNELIUS HOGHLAND,
ELEANOR HOGHLAND  his wife and HENRY HOGHLAND his son for Lot 20 on
Patterson's Creek, Hampshire Co. 328 acres.  D.B. book 5, pg 172.

1779, May 11:  A  land record (lease) between Lord Fairfax and Cornelius
Hoghland and Eleanor his wife, and Henry, his brother,  of Hampshire CO.
VA dated  Lot 20 on Pattersons Creek, northern neck of VA; 25 pounds in
current in hand paid as "back rent" for 328 acres.  "Rent henceforth
would be 5 pounds sterling each year."  So it appears that Houglands had
lived on that land for at least 5 years---probably more.  Henry is
probably over 21.
(Was Henry the one who was scalped?)

1782 Cornelius Hougland Hampshire Co Census p 27,  "10 whites."

1783 June:  Hampshire Co will of JOHN HARTLEY mentions dau, ELEONER
HOUGLAND and her 8 children incl a son CORNELIUS HOUGHLAND.  Executor
of will: Cornelius Houghland.       Hampshire Co WV Book 2 pg 90.
also  Sage & Jones p 118.

1784 Mar 9: - above will probated.

1784 Cornelius Hougland Hampshire Co Census p 72,    "9 whites."
!TO DO!  SLFHL has the following deeds which should be checked:
Year             Name                    Film #      Book      Page
1762   Hougland, Richard       588-700       1         137 (IMPORTANT!)
1768   Hougland, Henry          588-700    S 2           78 (IMPORTANT!)
1769   HARTLEY, JOHN           588-700    Lease 2   168
1777   HARTLEY, JOHN           588-702       4          150-151
1788  Hougland, Cornelius     588-702   Lease 5    172      (IMPORTANT!)

I have a record showing Eleanor Hougland as part of
_John?_____Hartleys descendants.  I think Cornelius was a witness.
I believe it came out of a book.

1798 Cornelius Hougland Sr. died in Wood Co. VA.  His wife suposedly
went back to Hampshire Co.

They had the following children:

  F i
Mary HOUGLAND was born about 1767.

Notes indicate Mary Hougland md Kerfoot.  HFH.
---------------------------
1783 June 5:  Hampshire Co will of JOHN HARTLEY probated 3-9-1784.
W.dec'd.  6 ch., l-Elizabeth, 2-Ann Harden,  3-Hannah Pearsall, 4-ELEANOR HOUGLAND'S  8 children Mary, Henry, Hannah, CORNELIUS, Macey, Margaret, Eleanor and Ann HOUGLAND; 5-Mary Wilson, 4 ch., Dan, William, James and Ruth Wilson;  6-Margaret.  Exec.,CORNELIUS HOUGHLAND and gr.son, Dan Wilson, son of Mary Wilson.  Wit., Jacob Slagle, Joseph House, James Doughtery.     Hampshire Co WV Book 2 pg 90.   Also Sage & Jones p 118.

Eleanor had 8 of her 10 children when her father, John Hartley made his will in 1783. Eleanor's son Cornelius was b 23 Nov 1773.  He is listed as child #4 in his grandfather's will.  From these two dates, his other sibling birthdates were approximated.

So Eleanor was md with 8 children by 1783.
  M ii
Henry HOUGLAND was born about 1769.

This part of the pedigree is still guesstimating----kinda.

Possibly some descendants of this Henry listed in Feb 5, 1980 letter of
Robert J Simpson's.  He mentions a JOHN HOUGLAND B 31 OCT 1792 IN
WASHINGTON CO PA, S/O Henry Hougland. They moved to Mercer Co. Pa
about 1796.    Hiram and his wife Elizabeth D. Boale moved to West
Union, Iowa in 1850 with his brother, Hull.  Their children were Melissa, John A., Kate B., Perry Janes, Sr., Eva G and Seth D.  Perry Janes Sr. was Mrs. Bakers grandfather.  Her address 2134 Fall Meadow,Missouri City
Texas 77459 in 1980.

Mr. Simpson goes on to say:  Forrest's History of Washington Co., PA
mentions a Hoagland's Fort built abt 1780, a Capt John Hoagland who was
never heard from again after the 1782 Sandusky expedition.  A Henry
Houghland is on a list of early Smith twp settlers, p 529.  The Henry
Hoagland of Hoagland's Fort was a squatter on land granted to Lund
Washington Nov 24, 1779.g

THERE IS MUCH MORE ABOUT CORNELIUS HOUGLAND IN THE HOUGLAND
FAMILY HISTORY, as well as the PALMER HISTORY OF 1888.  Both were
unpublished copies  in my possession.

Seems likely that Henry Hougland b 1755 (source of birth year?)
could be a brother of Cornelius who was born about 1750.?

BIRTH PLACE of Cornelius b 1773, (he would be 6 years old.) Probably
Patterson's Creek.  I have a land record (lease) between Lord Fairfax and
Cornelius Hoghland and Eleanor his wife, and Henry,  of Hampshire CO. VA
dated  May1779, Lot 20 on Pattersons Creek; 25 pounds in current in hand
paid as "back rent" for 328 acres.  "Rent henceforth would be 5 pounds
sterling each year."  So it appears that Hoglands had lived on that land
for at least 5 years---probably more.  Henry is probably over 21.
