1802 Dec 16 BIRTH:
BIRTH PLACE: Polly, John's oldest sibling, was born 1797 in
Williamsport, Wood Co., VA. according to the Polly McGinnis biography
found in THE FAMILY OF MAGENNIS, p212. The next two children,
Margaret (b 1798) and Ruth (b 1800), were also born in Williamsport.
1796: John Hougland's parents "left Hampshire Co. VA in fall of 1796,
came to Williamstown, Wood Co VA by way of Clarksburg with one horse
and 30 head of cattle. . .Cornelius selected a location on a small stream,
below Valley Mills, Wood Co, West Va which still bears the name of
HOUGLANDS RUN where he built a camp or cabin and managed to winter
the cattle on pea vine brouse and corn that he got from Mr. Blennerhasset
below Parkersburg and of Isaac Williams and Tomlinsons of
Williamstown. Cornelius lived here till spring of
1801 when he moved to Barlow and settled on lot 1/2 mile west of
Barlow Village."

JOHN md and located on the Hougland Homestead (1/2 mi west of Barlow
Village) where he resided unti lthe spring of 848 when he removed at age
45 to Guyandotte, Cabell Co West. Va. (his sister Polly lives there.)
1827 April: Lewis Hougland's Settlement, Washington Common Pleas,
Apr 1827. The account of John Hougland, guardian of Lewis Hougland,
minor & heir at law of Cornelius Hougland, late of Barlow, deceased.

"The first recorded religious services were held in a log schoolhouse
erected by Cornelius Hougland at his own expense for the benefit of his
neighbors families. This building was located on "cemetary hill" 3/8ths
of a mile southwest of Barlow village. This cemetery is on a rather
isolated tract and probably not too well known by the present
generation." (1947)
"SHORTLY AFTER THE DEATH OF MR. HOUGLAND, JOSEPH PALMER WAS
APPOINTED CLASS LEADER."
Cornelius Hougland owned 480 acres west?of Wolf Creek. It was
divided into 1/8 lots for the 8 children? John Hougland bot Elza's 1/8
for $180 John is living on tht land in 1828.
In 1828 John bought land in Barlow from his sister Eleanor and Vincent
Smith.
"IN 1834 the class was divided and at at a quarterly meeting, JOHN
HOUGLAND, David Ormiston, and Luman Richards were appointd as a
building committee to make an estimate of the amount need to erect a

Iowa. Their family consisted of MARIA, MARY, DAVID, PHEBE and JOHN
and FIVE CHILDREN THAT DIED YOUNG. "Mary and John moved to Olathe,
Johnson, KS shortly after war 1866."

Polly's" or maybe Uncle John (Hougland). John and wife, Mary Hougland
came there in 1848? and are in the 1850 census also.

PALMER HISTORY, an unpublished 7 paged history of that township, by
Lydia Palmer,1888, of Browns Mills, Wash Co OH, pg 5-7, has extensive
biographical sketch of the HOUGLAND FAMILY. Pg 6: "David md near
Spring Hill, MO and finally located near Olathe, Kansas about 1858 or 9.
where he now resides. He was joined by his father, mother, Maria and
John, shortly after the war. . . John Hougland, died near Olathe about
1875. Mrs. Hougland is still living with David in company with Maria &
John, who still remain single.." Lydia Palmer unpub ms 1888

PALMER HISTORY, an unpublished 7 paged history of that township, by
Lydia Palmer,1888, of Browns Mills, Wash Co OH, pg 6: "In the early
days, the Hougland family had suffered severely by the Indians in their
raids in the valley of VA. An Uncle of Cornelius gave his entire time to
the services of the Commonwealth of VA for the protection of their
homes. . . He was twice taken by the Indians, tomahawked, scalped and
left for dead, but recovered again, and joined once more in the service.
He was taken prisoner the third time, and was then taken to one of their
towns in Indiana, stuck full of pine faggots and burnt at the stake. The
place was visited by ELZA, LEWIS & DAVID HOUGLAND, when they went
west."(This was after their mother, Anna Stallcup's death in 1824.)
1873 DEATH: John Hougland died Dec 19, 1873 in Olathe, KS. His wife
Mary died Feb 22, 1890, also in Olathe. They had seven children: Maria,
Polly, David Proctor, Cornelius, Phebe, John M and Charles Corwin.

Find an 1870 census on them in Olathe, Johnson, KS. And an 1880 on
Mary (PROCTOR) HOUGLAND in Olathe. IF Maria did not marry, she is
probably with her folks.
