After Jeremiah Brookens died in 1880, his widow, Laura, and 6 children returned to Wisconsin. She was pregnant and had no means of support, so they all made their home with her parents , until her father, Isaih Johnson, died in 1881. Her baby, Carrie Mabel, was born that same year.
When the estate was settled, Laura and her seven children moved to Whiting, Iowa, and started a restaurant business, hoping to make their own living. But that winter disaster struck again (1882), The whole family had diphtheria, and 3 children died."
