SOURCE:  (1) From charts prepared by Miriam Dexter;

1900 Census of Elm Creek Twp., Marshall Co. Kansas lists Edmund  and
Mattie B. Dexter and four children.

1910 Census of Elm Creek Twp., Marshall Co. Kansas lists Edmund  and
Martha B. Dexter and four children. "Grace, daughter, 17, born KS"

"Julia and her brother and sisters all born at Elm Creek."

George H. Dexter sent (31 May 1991) a wonderful old picture of: "THE
EDMUND DEXTER FAMILY outside their Marshall Co., Kansas, farmhouse.
Little HAROLD looks about 5 years old, and JULIA about 7 which would
make the year about 1901.  GRACE was 10 in 1901, MYRLE was 12, their
mother, MATTIE 38,and their father, EDMUND was 43.  ED & MATTIE had
been married 15 years in 1901.  Their home and windmill looks
substantial and approximately 10 years old.  The house has the same
siding (clapboard) as his father's house.  Do the four horses, two with
colts, and hired man  belong to ED?

George H. Dexter also sent an outstanding PICTURE of JULIA and GRACE
DEXTER.  They appear to be outside the afore-mentioned  Kansas
farmhouse, and JULIA might be 22 and GRACE 25.  If so, the year would be
1916.

PICTURE OF MYRLE AND GRACE DEXTER  as young women.  Sent 6/1991
from  Sue Brandyberry, 639 Courtleigh Drive, Wichita, KS 67218.

George Dexter also sent a small snapshot of "ED DEXTER & grandson,
BYRON."  BYRON looks about 2.  About 1917.
(Birth Date: a list of birthdays, sent to Carol by Miriam, July 1990:
"Byron Mayer, July 6, 1915  grandson of Ed.")

Mary Luticia COX was born 18 Jan 1841 in , , MO. She died 1925 and was buried in Valley Cemetery. (Believed to be Alton, Osborne Co., KS)   Her first marriage was to a man named Deering.

Other marriages:
STRANGE, Roland Y.

Mary Luticia Cox              time line

29 Aug 1839  parents  Anna Cooper and Solomon Cox married  in Livingston County MO (Per John Farrell email)
18 Jan 1841   Born  in Missouri .
Marries 1st:   Deering
17 May 1865 Mary Alice Deering born.  (Indian territory, Oklahoma)
18 Oct 1867 Grandison Theodore Deering born  (Leavenworth, KS)
(1869)   A Deering born, likely a daughter of Mary. Not proved. See 1887
5 Mar 1880  Carra (or Carrie) Deering born       KS
7 Mar 1880 daughter Mary married Francis Marion Strange
4 Jul 1886  Marysville, Marshall,KS   married Roland Y. Strange. (her daughter’s father in law)  Roland’s first wife, Matilda Gross died 10 Feb 1886.  Flossie Jessup note says Mary was a widow too.
1887: in Marysville, Marshall, KS cemetery where Roland’s first wife, Matilda Strange is buried, there are two stones close to her. 10 feet from her stone is a stone that says “infant son of F.M. & M.A Strange. (Marion and Mary Deering Strange’s baby). Then just 4 feet behind that is a larger stone that says  “A Deering  Died July 1887 18 yrs.  We’ll miss you dear sister”

(Dave Minson note)This is strong circumstantial evidence to me that A Deering is Mary Deering’s sister Note: 1900 census indicates Mary had 7 children, 3 living, but the 1910 shows 4 children, 3 living.   There is a pretty big gap between Grandison b. in 1867 and Carra in 1880 which would suggest 7 may be more correct. Perhaps she had 7 pregnancies with 4 children that lived until 18 yr old daughter A. Deering died, leaving the 3.

1893:     "In 1893 they moved to a farm four miles west of Alton.  There they resided until 1905, moving from there to Alton." This from "A   card received from Sam Saville (which also) conveys the information of the death of Mr. R. Y. Strange on the 22d inst. at Alton, Osborne Co.  Mr. Strange was one of the early settlers of Blue Rapids City Township and had attained the age of 82 years and 26 days.

Per obituary for Grandma Strange (Mary Lutitia Strange)... (Blue Rapids News 8/25/1908 as found by Sharon Capezza - net.)

14 Sep 1900 “The Marshall County Friends of R Y Strange will be pleased to learn of that gentleman’s success in a financial way in Osborne Co. as indicated by the following from the Alton Empire: “RY Strange has added another quarter section to his holdings. He recently purchased the Thogmartin quarter in Round Mound”

 Carol Minson notes

In answer to my letter, the City Clerk of Alton, KS wrote: I contacted Carra Deering Hatfield, the step daughter of Rolan Strange, but she could not give me the information about father and mother's name. . . Carra  thought he was born VA. 1-16-1958."

Maiden Name of Rolan Strange's 2nd wife: "MARY L. COX." Source correspondence with Flossie Jessup,  Aug 19, 1962.

Comment:  I am assuming Mary Cox was married # 1 to a Deering.

BIRTH: From   Flossie Jessup,  Aug 19, 1962.  Also Mary's first marriage information.

MARRIAGE: 2nd Mg of Rolan Strange:" Mg to Mrs. M. L. Deering in 1886." (1 Feb 92: Letter from Helen Kracht, 506 Walnut St.  Marysville, KA 66508).

This further substantiates the data I already had of Roland's mg to Mary Luticia Cox Deering 4 Jul 1886 at Marysville.

PALMER HISTORY, an unpublished 7 paged history of that township, by
Lydia Palmer,1881, of Browns Mills, Wash Co OH,  pg 6:  "In the early
days, the Hougland family had suffered severely by the Indians in their
raids in the valley of VA.  An Uncle of Cornelius gave his entire time to
the services of the Commonwealth of VA for the protection of their
homes.  . . He was twice taken by the Indians, tomahawked, scalped and
left for dead, but recovered again, and joined once more in the service.
He was taken prisoner the third time, and was then taken to one of their
towns in Indiana,  stuck full of pine faggots and burnt at the stake. The
place was visited by ELZA, LEWIS  & DAVID HOUGLAND, when they went
west."(This was after their mother, Anna Stallcup's death in 1824.)

1773 Nov 23  Cornelius Hougland born.   Probably Patterson's Creek.  A
land record (lease) between Lord Fairfax and Cornelius Hoghland and
Eleanor his wife, and Henry, his brother,  of Hampshire CO. VA dated  May
1779, Lot 20 on Pattersons Creek; 25 pounds in current in hand paid as
"back rent" for 328 acres.  "Rent henceforth would be 5 pounds sterling
each year."  So it appears that Houglands had lived on that land for at
least 5 years---probably more.  Henry is probably over 21.

Parkersburg and of Isaac Williams and Tomlinsons of Williamstown.

Teasdale was a "miner" in West Allendale, NBL as evidenced of Allendale-Ninebanks parish register of the baptism of each of his first six children 1817-1829. (film #990-933, Carol.)

"Depression in mining in 1831" [in Northumberland] said John Temperley 1/91.

Mrs. Rutherford said that "Teasdale lived first near York" (now Toronto), Ontario Canada. I think this is questionable. Carol M

Dalton English said he didn't see why TEASDEL SR. picked the farm he did as it was very poor land; "all stones" I believe he said. On the road between Fraserville and Millbrook, which would not have been too far from Asahel's farm, we saw large stones, 2-3 feet in diameter piled around the edges of the fields, possibly there from early days. No wonder it was said they "got tired of plowing up a new crop of stones every year." (Ev Dex, p 207.)

" I have the family register of TEASDALE AND SARAH WHITFIELD and their family, but just the dates of their births and when they died, but not whom they married. My grandfather JOHN WHITFIELD died at Swan Lake, Manitoba in 1906 and Teasdel died at Blackstock in 1918. He was Mrs. Percy Van Camps grandfather. I have the dates when the rest of the family died. I also have a record of the brothers and sister of the first TEASDEL which I will send you. We didn't know that Sarah's name was BELL. It wasn't on the family register."

(Then she gives the Whitfield info, which is in TEASDALE WHITFIELD born 1792' notes)

She goes on: "THOMAS RITSEN name was at bottom of page. I remember hearing my mother say that Ritsens were related some way and later changed their name to RICHARDSON.

My grandfather John married SARAH ANN MARLOW and their family were:
TEASDALE born 1863
SOPHIA born 1865 my mother
NELSON born 1866
LEWIS born 1869
LILLIE born 1878
JOHN born 1879 They have all passed away and there are only 37 descenddants so far."

Teasdale must have gone out (from England to Canada) in 1831. Is is therefore probable that the rest of the family went out at the same time but we have two sources indicating 1832 for William and Thomas so possibly Teasdale went out, scouted the situation and the others followed one year later. My interest is that some connection of the family presumably crossed between 1841 and 1851 since I can't envisage the children crossing only in the care of their brother William - though it is not impossible towards the latter end of the decade. Jane b1791 and Salley b 1794.   You thought  my Sarah Bell born 1789,
was, perhaps "Salley b1794." (Pet names.)   That is a possibility, not to
be discounted.   I agree that the birthdate of "1794" seems to fit Sarah
Bell better than "1789."

However, I think  Sara Bell was indeed born in 1789, for the following
reasons:  Here is what I have:

BIRTH & Place: Family Tree, Teasdel Whitfield, b 1792/Sarah and 9
Children.  Ltr., in E. Dexter Notebook, p118, 9 Mar 1965. Quoting Ltr. of
Mable Rutherford,  gdau of Eliz. W. Sisson (#2 ch. of Teasdale b 1792.)
"Sarah, Mope Head 1789"

BIRTH & PLACE:   Record of Hazel English,  gdau of John Whitfield (#9 ch
of Teasdale b 1792) "Sarah, b. Mope Head 1789, d. December 10, 1870"

BIRTH: Cartwright, Ontario, Can.,  1861 Census,  "SARAH 72"

BIRTH: Cartwright Twp., 1871 Census, "died within the last 12 months,
SARAH WHITFIELD,  aged 81, b. Eng. died Dec 1870 disease of the lungs.

DEATH: St. John's Anglican Cemetery Record, of Blackstock, Cartwright
Twp., Durham Co. Ontario, Canada, "Sarah/ wife of/ Teasdel Whitfield/
died /Dec 10, 1870/ aged 81 years/ A native of/
Northumberland/England."

Sarah Bell would fit  the "(X)" spot above, nicely with an 1789 birth.
(Why it wasn't in the parish records is a mystery to me.)
