1777 Oct 1:  Mg of Elisha Alderman to Thankful Huff . Source "Alderman's in America".

1976 Maydell Alderman wrote: "We assume that Elisha Alderman  (1741-1832)
was born in CT.  He was md there in 1770  to Sarah Barnes.  We do not know exactly where or when he md 2nd wife Thankful Huff, from whom we are descended."  Her 1977 letter: "ELI HUFF ALDERMAN, son of ELISHA SR., told his children (who were double first cousins of Hosea Alderman's children), about two half brothers, children of ELISHA SR. by his first wife, who remained in NY staate and were said to have been brought up by their maternal grandparents.  E. R. Alderman a great grandson, wrote: 'Back of the mg of ELISHA and THANKFUL HUFF ALDERMAN there was a veil drawn over the history, and my uncles told me he never drew it aside, except that they knew he had been md in MA (incorrect) had three children, separated from his wife for what cause unknown, and settled in NY State while yet a comparatively young man."

1977 Maydell also wrote: "James W. Alderman, son of Elijah and Mary Watkins Alderman, was chaplain at Sing Sing Prison from Jan 1, 1878 to Apr 1, 1880...met a man who told him he knew an Alderman who was either a son or grandson of Elisha by his first wife, and that he resided near Binghamton, NY. (They may have lived in Broome Co NY, or an adjoining county)._
...Tradition that there was ill feeling between the two families....Uncles  knew he (Elisha) had been md, had 3 ch, separated and settled in NY state while a young man...
Elisha was from Simsbury and the New Haven Co records show that Sarah Barnes of North Haven md Elisha Alderman of Simsbury, Oct 1, 1770.  These are adjoining counties.
Thankful Huff...one reference said she was of Welsh descent and lived in or near Philadelphia.  E. R. alderman states she was of French descent--what source?"

1776 or thereabouts: "ELISHA ALDERMAN served in the Revolutionary War. His record is found in MA SOLDIERS AND SAILORS IN THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION, vol 1, p 111. Although one person was accepted by the DAR, future members must prove that ELISHA and THANKFUL were legally md.
I have searched the published vital records of towns in MA withough success.  Is ELISHA the same man who md SARAH BARNES?  He is possibly the head of household in the 1790 census of Mohawk Town, NY.  According to French's Gazeteer that is not the same as the present day Mohawk town." source: 1982 letter from VA Anderson,99331 Keene Lane S.E.; Aumsville, OR; 97325.
------------------------

1790: no Elisha Alderman in census of Connecticut nor in PA.
1790: There were two Alderman heads of family in NY:
EPHRAIM in Cambridge, Albany Co. (now Washington Co) and
ELIJAH ALDERMAN of Mohawk, Montgomery Co.  (This Elijah may have been Elisha.)
Besides his wife, there were two boys under sixteen and three girls in the family.
Could have been: ELISHA.
There were HUFF'S in Mohawk Town also.

1800: census only a JONATHAN ALDERMAN is in Ulster Co.  The rest died
or moved.
1800: census no Alderman's in Montgomery Co.NY.
"1800: Stephen Vandermark-New York.  But Job Phillips nor Elisha Alderman are listed.  The only Alderman is Jonathan in Ulster.  Where were they? They must have been in the back woods where they were missed.  I think Jonathan was a descendant of Timothy of Simsbury."  Maydell

1803: Elisha Alderman settled in Caneadea.  Caneadea founded in 1800,  is located on the Genesee River about 6 mi n of Belvidere.

"1803 Je 23: Book R1 T5 p 8, Allegany Co., Town of Caneadea,  ELISHA ALDERMAN,cash to Ephraim Sanford, agent."  Again, cash on Jy 5, 1809 to Sanford, and again cash to Eli Griffith, Jr D 22, 1810.
"1804 S 21:   Book R1 T5 p 21,  ELISHA ALDERMAN, cash. (source: Cornell Univ, Dept of Ms. "Settler's index of Holland Land Co. Records.)
Apparently, Elisha Alderman family was at Caneadea from- at least- June 1803 to Jan 1810. Doesn't this indicate his children born in Genesee Valley during those dates were born here?

1803:  "Elisha Alderman came to Allegany Co." (History of Allegany Co p 231).
Their family lived in Genesee Valley, NY for several years."

Ontario Co formed 1789
Genesee Co fromed 1802 from Ontario Co.
Allegany County formed 1806 from Genesee Co.
So the Alderman's could have lived in the same place and that place have 3 dif names-- from 1783 to 1808 or 1810.

Utica, NY was starting point of Genesee Road which state constructed west to Genesee Country--probably 1800?--It's possible the Aldermans and James Ward Smith went to Genesee Co by Mohawk Valley or River.

1800 "James Ward Smith md 17 Feb 1800 at Schenectady, NY, Esther Alderman, dau of Elisha and Thankful (Huff) Alderman.  Esther was born in 1782 in NY.  By 1809 they decided to move westward, migrating across NY state to Olean, on the Allegheny River, where they built a raft on which ELISHA ALDERMAN WITH THE FAMILIES OF HIS FIVE SONS AND DAUGHTERS, floated down the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh, and down the Ohio to Marietta. They, 22 or 23 in all, landed at Point Harmar, junction of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers and site of Fort Harmar, built in 1785-1786 by our government, for the protection of the land.  The families soon made their land purchases, JAMES WARD SMITH buying 160 acres from the estate of Geo Ewing, at Plymouth (Bartlett) Ohio.  ELISHA ALDERMAN AND HIS SONS had already bought a section near Joy, Morgan Co,OH, ten miles farther west." 1808 Spring: Elisha Alderman and Job Phillips came from Olean, NY and made a location on Sharp's Fork of Federal Creek (Homer twp of Athens then, now Morgan Co.OH)

Maydell Alderman said in Jan 1977 letter in ref to Elisha and Thankful: "The records show that their dau Mary was born March 4, 1777.  A dau Thankful 'died young' and she may have been their first child. Their last child was born in 1801 so we conclude Thankful was quite young when she married."

11. - LUCY ALDERMAN, born in 1796 in ____________;  md 10 Apr 1817, Athens Co, MATTHEW (or Homer) WATKINS.
Three children were born to them,  William, Esther and Elizabeth.
William, born 20 August 1820, was married 17 September 1842 and died in 1877.
Their son, JAMES W. PROUTY, was born 10 November 1843.  His first
wife, FANNIE J. GORDON, was born in South Carolina.  SALLIE M. HUGHES,
his second wife, was born in Mississippi.  His home was in Dalesville,
MS,and he had eight children.

12.- ANNA ALDERMAN was born 27 September 1801 in _______; Died 9 September
1878;  Md 30 Jun 1820 Athens Co SAMUEL HOWARD who was born 12 February 1793 and
died 29 September 1838.  The history of this family is very interesting.
They immigrated to Illinois in 1830 in a wagon, driving four teams of
oxen, as the hardships of the road through the wilderness would be too
great for horses to endure. They had a family of nine children.  ANNA and her husband died at Marietta, Illinois, he having lived there only eight years.  It is said that the first wheat bread in Illinois was made from flour sent to them by Ohio friends.  This was keel-boated down the Ohio and up the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, then hauled to where they lived. They made clapboards to pay for the freight. For a long time, letter postage was not paid in advance.  The rate was twenty-five cents a letter.  One came to them when they had no money, as was often the case in those days, so they flailed out a bushel of wheat for which they got twenty-five cents, and so were able to get their letter.

I found a first marriage for Reason Scott, son of Mathew and Lucinda (Bevington) Scott, in a list of Wayne County, Ohio marriages. Reason married Eartha Buckmaster July 13, 1839. He is in the 1850 census for Hicksville Township, Defiance County, Ohio and is married to Jane DeBolt. The children listed are Mathew and Catherine. I assume that Mathew was a  result of the first marriage and Catherine from the second one.

Reason is shown in the 1870 census for Farmer Township, Defiance County, Ohio and the children shown are Reason W., Hester and Samuel.

=========================================

Marriage: pg 98 of Brookens-Brookins book says Married 2nd Reason Scott, 5 Mar 1846 Holmes Co. Records.

Note Merna Brookens Smiths Records say Reason Scott had children from his first marriage  Matthew, Samuel, Wash, Jennie and a deaf girl.  they lived in William Center Oh, Occupation farmer (Bro020 11)
CONFLICT: only Matthew is noted in 1860 census with Jane and Reason, He is 19 at that time. Don't know Merna's source, but 1880 census indicates Samuel and Washington are Jane's children from their ages/ Jane-Reason's marriage date. Also, is Washington in the 1880 census the same guy as Reason in 1860?

I found a first marriage for Reason Scott, son of Mathew and Lucinda (Bevington) Scott, in a list of Wayne County, Ohio marriages. Reason married Eartha Buckmaster July 13, 1839. He is in the 1850 census for Hicksville Township, Defiance County, Ohio and is married to Jane DeBolt. The children listed are Mathew and Catherine. I assume that Mathew was a  result of the first marriage and Catherine from the second one.

CENSUS: 1850, Hicksville, Defiance, Ohio 23 August 1850
Reasin Scott 30 M Farming Ohio
Jane 29 F    Ohio
Matthew 10 M    Ohio
Catharine 4/12 F  Ohio
Louisa DeBolt 10 F  Ohio

Note Merna Brookens Smith's records say Reason Scott had children from his first marriage  Matthew, Samuel, Wash, Jennie and a deaf girl.  they lived in William Center Oh; occupation farmer.
CONFLICT: only Matthew is noted in 1860 census with Jane and Reason, He is 19 at that time. Don't know Merna's source, but 1880 census indicates Samuel and Washington are Reason & Jane's children from their ages/ Jane-Reason's marriage date. Also, is Washington in the 1880 census the same guy as Reason in 1860?

Eartha Buckmaster  married Reason SCOTT 13 Jul 1839 in Wayne County Ohio.

They had the following children:

  M i
Matthew SCOTT. b. about 1840 in Ohio

1850 Hicksville Ohio census lists Reason and Jane Scott family with 10 yr old Matthew Scott.  This was Jane's 2nd mg and her 10 yr old  daughter Louisa Debolt is also listed with the family.  They were md 1846 so I am assuming Matthew was a son from a prior  marriage for Reason.

Solon P. ROBERTSON was born 8 Sep 1891 in , , OH. He died Jun 1980 in , , OH. Solon married Maude RESLER.

Samuel WOODWARD married Patience ALDERMAN on 1771.

Patience ALDERMAN [Parents] 1 was born 4 Jul 1749 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut. She married Samuel WOODWARD on 1771.

See Archive Record for Patience Alderman as wife of Samuel Woodward, possibly submitted by Mardelle E. Workman of Long Beach, CA in 1949..  CM has archive record of Patience Alderman as a child of William and Patience.

Will of Mary Sweeney  is mentioned as a source in archive sheet of  Wm Alderman b 1719.

"Mary Sweeney, widow, who resided in Simsbury.  She died May 26, 1748,
leaving legacy to granddau Patience Alderman.   William, guardian- Jul 4, 1749."
(comment by C. Minson. We need to know the date of the will for better understanding of  the above data.
I do not know what the July 4, 1749 date implies.   In one place I see granddau, Patience Alderman,  born 1745  which would make her  3 years old in 1748.  ? Another place, the AF, has granddau, Patience Alderman born July 4, 1749.  This makes no sense at all if Mary Sweeney really died May 26, 1748.  A copy of the original will needs to be reviewed..)

HARRINGTON married Judith ALDERMAN.

Judith ALDERMAN [Parents] was christened 1744 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut. She married HARRINGTON.

1744 Chr of Judith Alderman  and mg to Mr. Harrington was sent by David D. Dewey, of West Covina, CA, March 1960.  He is a descendant.

Ancestor File does not list Judith. Not to worry.  AF has many errors. Or maybe David Dewey is in error.
