Quick Summary of JOHN

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOTS More details below:
1775/1776:
John Hague was probably born in Pennsbury, Chester Co, PA
since his father, John Hague(abt 1750) is listed there
in Revolutionary War Records; His father also listed in Pennsbury in 1781
and 1785---PA Archives.
JOHN HAGUE born
about 1775 is the one whose GRAVE STONE WAS LYING FLAT ON THE GROUND
COMPLETELY COVERED WITH THREE INCHES OF DIRT!! .
The stone read:
"In Memory of
John Hague
Who
Departed this life
January the 11, 1841
In the 66th
year of his
life."
---------------------
1840 Dec 1: A Guernsey County
Court Record states: "JOHN HAGUE deceased Dec 1, 1840."
JOHN HAGUE-b 1775- died Dec 1,
1840. His gravestone was probably erected later and thus had an erroneous
death date.
1840 Dec 24: SPECIAL SESSION
COURT, GUERNSEY CO. OH, HELD FOR ESTATE OF JOHN (b 1775)HAGUE:
JOHN(b 1804) and
JOSEPH(1806)HAGUE to be administrators.
----------------------
The Hague Graveyard is located one mile East of
Kennonsburg, OH, about 400 yards east of the house, up on the hill of
Section 12, T 8, R 8.
It's almost impossible to find without a guide, as the
underbrush is very dense. That area is now Wayne Twp., Noble Co., Ohio.
I have a story about that graveyard entitled: "Shut
Up, Woman!" or, "The Best Genealogy Find - Ever!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1775: JOHN HAGUE was s/o JOHN & SARAH (COLLINS)
HAGUE. John's father (b abt 1750) died in 1802.

Only the above three Hague Families in Fayette County
in l800.
No WILLIAM HAGUE in the Chester Co. l800 Census Index.
(Does anybody have any more information about this
William?)
1800: Apparently JOHN HAIG (1775) md before 1800
census. He appears to be in
1800 census (above) and in
1801: his son, REUBEN HAGUE was born PA according to
1810-1870 census. It's likely that JOHN HAIG (1775) md a Mendenhall. We
know her first name was Sarah. REUBEN was the first of their seven known
children.
1802 before Sep:--John's(1775) father died in Fayette
Co, PA- prob Menallen Twp..
1802 Sep: Guardian Appointment, Fayette Co, PA:
"JOSEPH Hague, ISAAC Hague and REUBEN Hague, minor
sons of JOHN HAGUE (b 1750) late of Menallen Twp, deceased, being severally
above the age of 14 yrs, come into court and choose John Townsend of
Menallen Twp to be guardian. ..during their minority. The court appoints
John Work of German Twp to be guardian over. . .SARAH Hague and ANN Hague,
minor children of John Hague late of Menallen. . . until they severally
arrive at the age of 14 yrs."
"Severally above age 14" would mean those 3 "minor
sons" of John Hague(1750) were ages 15-20. This indicates that
Joseph, Isaac,
and Reuben were born 1782-1787. 1850 Oct 18: census
Isaac says he's 65. If he already turned 65 in 1850 he's born 1785. If he
would yet be 66 in 1850, he's born 1784.
1804 Mar: Guardian choice: Docket 1, p 49: "Sarah
Hague, minor dau of John (1750) Hague late of Menallen Twp. deceased, being
above the age of 14 years, comes into court and chooses Thomas Lewis to be
guardian over her person and estate during her minority." (So, Sarah b abt
1792.)
1804: JOHN born, s/o JOHN HAGUE (1775), probably
Fayette Co, PA.
1805 Sep 11: US Patent on Section 1, T 8, R 8 - 37 ac
in Guernsey Co., OH to JOHN HAGUE (b1775). See 1836 resale of this
land. This S.1 adjoins S.12 on the north. (His land, now in Wayne Twp.,
Noble Co OH, was part of Guernsey Co, OH until 1851 when it became Noble
Co.)
1806 Jun 26: JOSEPH ( Josiah) born, s/o JOHN HAGUE
(1775), Fayette
Co, PA.
1809 abt: JANE born d/o JOHN HAGUE (1775), probably
Fayette Co, PA
1810 Aug 6: Census of JOHN, HENRY, JOSEPH, ISAAC
and (2)WILLIAM Hagues. Five (married) of the six sons of John Hague1750 -
live close together in Menallen Twp, Fayette Co, PA.. John 1750 died Dec
1802. His widow, SARAH [Collins] HAGUE, lives close to her five sons. She
has l m 16-26-son (REUBEN),
and 2 f 16-26- (daus SARAH JR, and NANCY.)
1810 Aug 6: Census: Menallen Twp, Fayette Co. PA
Head of family: JOHN HAGUE 26-44 (JOHN 1775 wd be
35)
1 F 26-44 (wife-SARAH?)
3 M 0-9 (REUBEN b 180l; JOHN b 1804; JOSEPH b
1806.)
1 F 0-9 (JANE ( b 1805-1810, see 1820 census)
1812 about AMOS HAGUE born, s/o JOHN HAGUE
(1775).
1812: JOHN HAGUE (1775) from Fayette Co. PA settled
in Wayne Twp. At that time it was Guernsey Co. OH. Source: 1887 HISTORY
OF NOBLE CO. OH, by
Watkins, 1887, p 583. See p. 9 of this chapter ----
or, see a Co History for twp/county boundary changes of this area.
1812: "John Hague (1775) came to this twp as early
as 1812. . . There were still some Indians in the country when the family
came." HISTORY OF NOBLE CO, OHIO, 1887: p. 509.
1814 Dec 29: #987 Hague, Henry et ux, JOHN HAGUE
(1775), Deed, Menallen Twp, Fayette, Co, PA, 74 a. r-Dec 30 1814, Book J
p. 271.
So, now that he's in Guernsey Co, Ohio, John (1775)
sells his land in Fayette Co. PA. Henry Hague is probably his brother.
1816: JOHN(1775) son ISAAC born, prob Wayne Twp.,
Guernsey Co., OH
1820: JOHN HAGUE(1775) first appears in tax records
as owning
S.12 N.W. R.8, T.8,, Guernsey Co. OH. JOHN HAGUE
(1775) is not listed
in the 1818 or 1819 tax records. As I understand it,
early tax laws in Ohio allowed people to live on their land for five years
before having to pay taxes.
1820 Aug 7: Census of Menallen Twp, Fayette Co, PA
p. 144 has WILLIAM and two ISAAC'S (One is s/o John b 1750 & Sarah. One
is s/o Wm b1746 & Ruth). SARAH and JOSEPH both on p. 146 of Menallen,
and a JOHN JR p. 121 in Redstone, Fayette Co. JOHN has moved over to
Guernsey Co, OH, by now and apparently HENRY has also. There is a HENRY in
Wills Twp, Guernsey Co, OH - could be abt 42 - probably. REUBEN is in
Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, 1820 p. 36. Pittsburgh is 10-12 miles from
Menallen.
1820 Aug 7: Census of Richland Twp., Guernsey Co.,
Ohio, p. 172a

1824 Sep 13: JOHN(1775) son URIAH HAGUE born Wayne
Twp., Guernsey Co. OH
1825 Oct: The Fayette Co. PA Orphans Court Docket
2. p. 196, gives a
listing of the eight children of JOHN HAGUE
(1750-1802) in the same
order as the above listing, and names his widow,
SARAH! So we know
JOHN HAGUE (1775 my #1018) was the son of JOHN and
SARAH HAGUE.
The maiden name of SARAH (who md John Hague b 1750)
might be
found in SARAH'S will in which she names her sister
"ANN HARVEY."
SARAH'S will registered 27 Apr 1832, and probated 7
May 1832 in
Fayette Co, PA. (Just keep yourself focused now so
you don't get confused with the "Sarah's and John's" There's two
generations of them and you need to keep them straight! You can do it..)
1825: I didn't find JOHN(1775) in Guernsey Co. OH,
tax records again until 1825: "159 acres, value $289."
1825 Oct: Fayette Co, PA Orphans Court PROBATE:
Docket 2, p. 196:

his children. . .Court assessed an inquest . . .issued to June 1827. . .Term

same as "Ann" Hague in previous Orphans Court and Guardians Court records.)
1826: JOHN HAGUE (1775) is listed in Guernsey Co.
OH personal property
taxes as having 2 horses & 2 cows. His eldest son,
REUBEN also appears here
for the first time. I did not see either Hague on
land taxes.
1827: JOHN HAGUE (1775) S.12 N.W., R 8, T 8, 159
acres, value $289.
1828: "January term 1828; Vol 2; p 304:

1828, 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832 JOHN HAGUE (1775) is
in Guernsey Co. OH. tax
records.
1829: Death of son, Isaac:
Sarah was the wife of John (1775) and the mother of
Isaac as shown on the
gravestone of Isaac. We do not yet know if she was
the mother of all
John's (1775) children.
There is an 1829 gravestone for son, ISAAC, (b 1816)
in that HAGUE
GRAVEYARD. It reads:
In Memory of
Isaac Hague
Son of John and
Sarah Hague
Who died Jan
the 30 1829 in
the 13th year of
his age.
There were 15 stones in that
graveyard.
Carol Minson made field notes in June 1988, which she
is willing to share-
however, now in 2001, they are confusing, even to
her.

1840, Dec 1: A Guernsey County Court Record states:
"JOHN HAGUE deceased Dec l, l840."
1840 Dec 24: SPECIAL SESSION COURT, GUERNSEY CO. OH,
HELD FOR ESTATE OF JOHN (b1775)HAGUE:
JOHN(b1804) and JOSEPH(1806)HAGUE to
be administrators.
JOHN HAGUE-b 1775- died Dec 1,1840.
His gravestone was
probably erected later and thus had an
erroneous death date.
----------------------
184l July 29: JOHN (37, b1804) HAGUE, "filed
petition in Court of Common
Pleas, Guernsey Co., Ohio against (siblings:)

AMOS HAGUE, (29, b abt 1812)
URIAH HAGUE, 16, b 1824)
demanding partition of land, to wit: NW 1/4 of Sl2,
T.8 R.8, 159 acres
(now) situate in Seneca Twp., Guernsey Co."
"LEFT NO WIDOW. Left 6 children heirs at law, all of
full age except URIAH."
The above document helped prove the
relationship of
REUBEN(1801)HAGUE to his father
JOHN(1775)HAGUE
Perhaps the reasons REUBEN(1801), the eldest, was not
administrator:
l.- He lived 50-60 miles to the south.
2.- They had lost FIVE of their previous 7 babies!
3.- His wife now must have had her hands full with
their #8 and #9 .....babies- who were 9 mo old
TWINS! (For further info see notes of Reuben Hague b.
1801)
1775-1840 was the lifespan of JOHN HAGUE who moved to
Guernsey Co, Ohio
about 1812. He is the HAGUE who first settled that
piece of land, much of which
is now buried under the peaceful waters of
man-made Seneca Lake.
He is the JOHN HAGUE who is buried up ………on
hill,…………… 400 yards
east of (his?) house, …… 1 mile east of
Kennonsburg, OHIO.
1845: REUBEN'S younger brother JOSEPH (1806) bought
the home
property from the other five siblings. JOSEPH and his
wife, BARBARA (YOHO)
and ten children lived on S.12, T
8, R 8, the rest of his life.
(For further info see chapter on
Joseph Hague b 1806.)
John-b 1775- Hague's property was NW 1/4 of S 12, T 8,
R 8, 159 acres.
That land was renamed 3 times:
1820: "Richland Twp, Guernsey Co.," p.172A
1830: "Richland Twp, Guernsey Co., p. 431;
1840: "Seneca Twp, Guernsey Co., p. 423
the above 3 census have "Isaac Mendenhall" and "Law"
as neighbors.
1850: "Wright Twp, Guernsey Co," p. 322 (R8,
T8, S 12)
NOTE! WRIGHT TWP BECAME WAYNE TWP, NOBLE CO, OH
in 1851.
1860: "Wayne Twp, Noble Co.," p. 502.

TO DO'S: The following notes need more attention:
(Melissa, how do I wrap around text. Where is the
button for it.)
1. QUESTION: When JOHN (1775) took out the land
patent in 1805,
did he have to make land improvements in a specified
time such as the
Homestead Act required?
Did he live on that S 1 property first?
If so, when did he move over to S 12, R 8, T 8?
.____________________
2. Seven HAGUE families live in six PA. counties in
the l790 census.
There are l5 HAGUE families living in five PA counties
in the l8l0 census.
****(I also need to analyze those two 1800 census.
John (1775) in both?)***
It doesn't appear correct that there would be only
five HAGUE families
in two PA. counties in the l800 census. But that is
all that I found. Recheck
that l800 census index.
OK, I have the l800 index here in front of me:
"H to HAIR." What are the other phonetical
spellings of HAGUE?
"HAAG, HAGE, HAIG, HAIGUE,"all
of which fall within "H to HAIR".
NUTS to this part of the
problem.!
I'm
going on to other data! _______________________
3. CENSUS 1810: Menallen Twp, Fayette Co. Pa
Head of family: JOHN HAGUE (b 1775) 26-44 (he wd be

1 f 0-9 (JANE b 1803-1810)
ISAAC HAGUE, THOMAS LAW, JOSEPH HAGUE, JOHN HAGUE
and HENRY
HAGUE are all close by in Menallen Twp, Fayette Co.
Pa:
ARE THERE MENDENHALLS CLOSE BY? Why Sarah
"Mendenhall" --besides proximity.?
4. RESEARCH YET TO DO: FAYETTE Co. Probate records
need to be checked
further. Looks like Hagues there from at least 1790 to
1812; I'm sure HAGUES were there later.

(Compiler thinks each of the 8 children will have
sold the 74 acres that was their father, John's,land. Probably we just
missed finding some of the records of his children who sold their 74
acres.)
July 12, 2001:
JOHN and his WIFE'S AGES STAY CONSISTENT. So, perhaps
he did not have a 2nd wife. Uriahs birth in 1824 -- 8 years later than
Isaacs - might indicate a 2nd wife.
I had a son, 9 years later than Ron. Certainly no 2nd
wife. Lucky for you, my children, no second husband either!

_________________________________________________________
If the census numbers are correct, they place John's
birth at 1775-6 to 1780 and
Sarah's at 1775-1780. She's likely 5
years younger than he.
1800 indicates he was born 1775-1784.
Which means he was born 1775 or beginning
of 1776.
1820 John says "45+" which means he's not less than
45,
so he was born on or after 1775.
I did do up to mid -1800's of Fayette Co, PA Grantor
and Grantee Index at SL.
Grantor index was film # 857,787 (Gl-Hl) years
1784-1940 (difficult film) and
Grantee Index was film # 863, 541 (He-I Jl. A
better organized film)
I did not do Deeds themselves: # 863, 548 to #863,
553 (4 films for years 1784-1817).
I did not do Mortgages: #861,598 and #861-607 for
H's.
I did not do Index to Surveys-handwritten A-L-
1769-1900: # 861,079
I did not do Warrants 1769-1900: # 861,081 (THIS
WOULD BE GOOD TO DO!)

HAGUE SCHOOL HOUSE. MRS. MASSIE TOLD ME MAY
11 1983..(She was 81
years old in 1983.) "THE HAGUE SCHOOL WAS ON
THE SAME HILL WHERE
THE HAGUE GRAVEYARD WAS. IT'S NOT THERE
NOW. IT WAS ONE BIG
ROOM AND HAD 8 OR 9 KIDS. UP TO THE 8TH
GRADE. IT WAS A FRAME
BUILDING WITH A SLATE ROOF AND A BIG HEATER.
HAD OUTSIDE TOILET."
SHE ATTENDED UP TO THE 4TH GRADE AND THEN SHE
WENT TO
KENNONSBURG SCHOOL FROM THEN ON.
1984, Mar 3."Conservancy District owns the
land now that the Hague
schoolhouse was on. It's close to the lake,
east end of the lake..not too
far from (Mrs. Massie's) in Kennonsburg."
(Bruce Carpenter lived there,
or farms the land. I corresponded with his
wife a time or two abt 1984.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I NEED to study the townships of Guernsey Co and
Noble Co again.
GUERNSEY had: BEAVER, RICHLAND, WRIGHT, SENECA?
NOBLE CO has: MARION, MONROE, SENECA, UNION, WAYNE,
CEMETERIES IN WAYNE TOWNSHIP: (according to Mrs.
Massie-1984)
2 at Kennonsburg & Family Cemeteries
2 at Lower Possum

A comparison of all JOHN-1775-HAGUE'S neighbors -
listed on the same census page as he in the l820, l830, l840 and l850 showed
the following:
A- In the l820, l830 and l840 census, 11 of 28
neighbors had the same surname.
B- In l850, 5 of l0 neighbors listed had the same
surname.
This proves that JOHN-1775-HAGUE lived in the same
neighborhood from l820 through 1840. His son, JOSEPH lived there also in
1850.
The three different
township names on those four census are a result of name changes of township
and not
indicative of JOHN HAGUE moving to another township.
