Dave's Roots and Branches

George WHITFIELD [Parents] was born 6 Oct 1788 in Wolf Cleugh, West Allendale, Northumberland, England and was christened 7 Oct 1788 in Ninebanks, Allendale Parish, Northumberland, Eng.. He married Mary CUZEN? ? on 30 Jul 1814 in Allendale, Nbl, Eng.

BIRTH:  WHI0143,  Hazel English's  "Family Register of Teasdel and Sarah
Whitfield" as sent to E. Dexter, Apr. 29 1965. p. 154, E. Dexter Notebook: "
"George Whitfield born at Wolf Cleugh in West Allendale Oct 6, 1788."

Baptism: Christening date from NBL 1988 IGI: "GEORGE WHITFIELD [son
of] Thomas Whitfield/Mary, 7 Oct  1788, Ninebanks."

BAPTISM:   The following explanation re "Mary" as the mother,  is
resolved in the baptism record of Joseph Whitfield, younger brother to
George:  "Oct 3, 1790, Joseph son of Thomas and Mary Whitfield of
Woofcleugh." The word Mary has  "BETTY" written above it!
This can be seen on film #353536-chapelry of Ninebanks, in the county
of Northumberland 1790-1796 the page of which I have a copy.--
WHIO159.

I don't find George b 1788 or son George in the A'Dale Census.
I've only checked (by 1997) West Allen, High & Low Grieveship and  High
Forest Grieveship...so there is more to check.  It appears that the
following census is his son Walton who was born 3 Nov 1816:

Census 1841 West Allen, Broad Lee pg 11.
Whitfield, Walton 20
     "        Jane      25
     "        Henry     4
      "       Mary       1

Census 1861 West Allen, Coal Cleugh  p 7.
Whitfield, Walton 44?
"        Jane      47  born Alston, CUL
     "      Elizabeth 10
      "      Thomas     9
     "         Jane        6
     "        Walton     ?
   "       Margaret    infant?

Mary CUZEN? ? was born about 1794 in Probably, Allendale. She married George WHITFIELD on 30 Jul 1814 in Allendale, Nbl, Eng.

If George md an Allendale girl, then it was Mary Cuzen.  This is the only
marriage of a "George Whitfield" to anyone in the time frame in which he
would have md, in Allendale.
(I checked fiche #06901780 for Allendale and #1235339 for St Peters
and Allenheads Chapelries.)
It's possible that he md out of the parish.

They had the following children:

  M i
Thomas WHITFIELD was born in Wolf Cleugh, W. Allendale, Nbl and was christened 3 Sep 1815 in Ninebanks, W. Allendale, Nbl. He was buried 14 Nov 1816.

BIRTH PLACE  & BAPTISM:  Original Ninebanks Parish Register
1813-1921.  Whitfields extracted by Carol Minson 23 Sep 1987.
"3 Sep 1815, Thomas s/o George & Mary Whitfield, Wolf Cleugh, Miner.

BAPTISM:  IGI; and film 252526, which is pg 49 Lila;  also film 990933.

BURIAL: Original Ninebanks Parish Register:  "NOV 14, 1816, THOMAS
WHITFIELD OF WOLF CLEUGH, AGE 1."

THOMAS #914 AND HANNAH ALSO HAD A SON THOMAS, BORN 6 FEB 1814.
(THEY also LIVED AT WOLF CLEUGH !) THAT CHILD WOULD HAVE BEEN 2
YEARS OLD PLUS 9 MONTHS.....
SO IT SEEMS  THE THOMAS WHO DIED IN 1816 "age 1" WAS THE SON OF
GEORGE AND MARY.
  M ii
Walton WHITFIELD was born in Wolf Cleugh, W. Allendale, Nbl and was christened 3 Nov 1816 in St. Peters & A., Allendale, Nbl.

BAPTISM:  IGI; FILM 252523, & 990933 .

There is a Walton Whitfield=JANE in 1841 census, age 20, md.,  living
next door to John#915 Whitfield and Hannah at Broad Lee. ( census page
11).  I THINK he is likely the WALTON WHITFIELD  b 1816, son of George
and Mary Cuzen Whitfield.  If so, then John#915 is the Uncle of Walton.

However, there is another WALTON WHITFIELD =JANE in 1861 census, age
44, with  5 children.  NOTE,  Wife Jane born" CUL!"
I SUSPECT  THIS WALTON WHITFIELD is son of Nicholas Whitfield and
Elizabeth Walton of Alston and is the #1735 WALTON  who md JANE
WAILES 6 APR 1829.
M iii Joseph WHITFIELD was christened 4 Apr 1819.
  M iv
George WHITFIELD was born in Wolf Cleugh and was christened 14 Sep 1823 in Ninebanks, W. Allendale, Nbl.

BIRTH PLACE  & BAPTISM:  Original Ninebanks Parish Register

BAPTISM:  IGI and film 990-933 say 14 Sep 1823. I went by this.
  M v
William WHITFIELD was born in Wolf Cleugh, W. Allendale, Nbl and was christened 2 Oct 1825 in Ninebanks, W. Allendale, Nbl. He died in Of Wolfclough and was buried 4 Dec 1825 in Ninebanks.

"2 Oct 1825 William s/o George & Mary Whitfield, Wolf Cleugh, Miner."

BAPTISM:  IGI and film 990-933.

There is a William Whitfield b 1821-1826 in 1841 census staying with
Edward Coats (uncle?) family  at Hearty Cleugh, pg 22 in 1841.  "William
Whitfield 15, lead ore miner."
William#1369  Whitfield b 11 Jul 1824 might possibly be the one....
or it might be
William #1258 Whitfield b 2 Oct 1825, son of George & Mary Whitfield .
BOTH WERE BORN AT WOLF CLEUGH.
(Why did their parents confuse us later generations like this?)

BURIAL: of A William Whitfield, age 10 months-of Wolf Cleugh on
4 Dec 1825, buried Ninebanks.  It may have been this WIlliam #1258
Whitfield.
  F vi
Hannah WHITFIELD was born in Wolf Cleugh, W. Allendale, Nbl and was christened 4 Feb 1827 in Ninebanks, W. Allendale, Nbl.

BIRTH PLACE  & BAPTISM:  Original Ninebanks Parish Register
