(Carol's comments) --- Why did he go to Iowa in 1861 and then Illinois? Did he go off to fight in Civil War--not like it (who did?) and came back as quickly as he could?
Did it have to do with the Civil War? Iowa and Illinois were against
slavery. Missouri was for slavery. He had been raised in Ohio which was
against slavery. Perhaps this was the issue.
