Dave's Roots and Branches

John WHITFIELD Butcher was born about 1747 in Of Bails, Alston, Cul. He died 12 Jan 1819 in Raise, Alston, Cul. John married Mary STOUT on 6 Aug 1775 in Alston, Cul.

Dr. Jeanette Barraclough Young of Sussex, England has done extensive
research on the Whitfield line.  Carol Minson has 1977 Notes of her
research, including four

pedigree charts.  (I have rechecked a great deal of her work and find it
accurate---with few exceptions.)  (WHI0199F.)

Dr. Young's letter of Feb 23, 1977: "John Whitfield of Blackhouse, (etc)
died in 1819 and his tombstone age say 72 and the register says 76!  (Not
very accurate-but I would think 70 would be more accurate, judging by
other sources.  Perhaps the '6' in the register is a bad 'O'.  (The vicar said
the writing was poor.)  Also the Register calls him of Raise, so maybe he
died at his son Ralph's house."

"There is (another) John  Whitfield 'of Blackhouse' and he may be the
eldest son of John Whitfield X Mary Stout.  The fact that he is living at
Blackhouse suggests he is living with his father at this address before
the latter is styled 'of Raise'  (unless Blackhouse is at Raise.)"

From Dr. Young's pedigree chart with letter #2, Feb 23, 1977:
"John Whitfield of 'Bails' also styled of Low Park & of Blackhouse
(Butcher)  (mentioned in his uncle's will)
md 1775 at Alstone, Mary Stout dau of William Stout of Allendale by his
wife Jane, dau of Thomas Whitfield of Allendale by Margaret Teasdale."

Sandy Baguley is also a desc of this John #474.  She has his death date
of 12 Jan 1819 aged 72 y.  This would make his b abt 1747.
Marriage date 6 Aug 1775 witness Jos Richardson.

Alston Epitaphs in Alston Churchyard:
Sacred to the memory of JOHN WHITFIELD
OF BLACKHOUSE who departed this life
January 12, 1819, aged 72 years (should be 76 as in the register)
also of Mary his wife who died Sep 4 1809 aged 51 years.

Mary STOUT [Parents] was born about 1758 in Of Allendale, Nbl. She died 4 Sep 1809. Mary married John WHITFIELD Butcher on 6 Aug 1775 in Alston, Cul.

MARRIAGE: (WHI0199F.) Ltr. fr. Dr. J. Young, 28 Jan 1977, to Miriam
Dexter

MARRIAGE!  WHI0199F From Dr. J. M. Young, nee Barraclough a direct
descendant of John Whitfield-born abt 1749.

Note from Carol.  "The following children may not be children of John and
Mary.  The IGI shows them as being children of John Whitfield only.  All
the other children show both "John Whitfield and Mary" as the parents. In
the case of the last two children, Teasdale and Teasdale both are shown
as children of "John Whitfield and Mary Stout." Here are the names of the
children that may NOT belong to John Whitfield AND Mary:
William born 1784
Ann born 1787
Jane born 1790
Ralph born 1794

Sandy Baguley is also a desc.  She has her death date of 4 Sep 1809 aged
51 y.  This would make her b abt 1758.
Marriage date 6 Aug 1775 witness Jos Richardson.

Alston Epitaphs in Alston Churchyard:

Ann Whitfield 1787: "?ob infans [uncertain].  ? =1808 John Stephenson
of Wellgill"?
If the above is correct, possibly the IGI mg of an Anna Stephenson (to a
Thomas Whitfield) 15 May 1823 is a daughter of this Ann born 22 Jul
1787.

Baptism:  full date from IGI
M viii Joseph WHITFIELD was christened 6 Jul 1788.

research, including three pedigree charts.  (I have rechecked a great deal
of her work and find it accurate---with few exceptions.)  (WHI0199F.)

This child was on her pedigree chart of Feb 1977.  However the IGI lists
the father" John", only, and not "Mary" the mother.  I think its likely we
have  two different families with a JOHN WHITFIELD as father.

Sandy Baguley has Jane bur 24 Mar 1790.
  M x William WHITFIELD was christened 28 Mar 1791.
M xi Christopher WHITFIELD was christened 28 Mar 1791.

  M xvii
Teasdale WHITFIELD was born in Park, Allendale, Northumberland, England and was christened 4 Jul 1799 in Alston, Cul, , England.

Dr. Jeanette Barraclough Young of Sussex, England has done extensive research on the Whitfield line.  Carol Minson has 1977 Notes of her research, including three pedigree charts.  (
Dr. Young's letter of Feb 23, 1977:  "The two Teasdale Whitfields in the Alstone Registers are given thus:-

Bapt Jul 4 1799 Teasdale Whitfield 9TH SON of JOHN WHITFIELD of Park, Pork BUTCHER, BY HIS WIFE MARY, DAU OF WILLIAM AND JANE STOUT of
Allendale.

Bapt July 12, 1799  Teasdale Whitfield 10TH SON of JOHN WHITFIELD OF BLACKHOUSE, BUTCHER, BY HIS WIFE, DAU OF WILLIAM STOUT."

"I feel there is little doubt that the boys were twins and that the first one died between July 4th and July 12th & so his (slightly) younger brother was given the name Teasdale. I can find no entry of the baptism (she means burial) of  baby #1."
  M xviii
Teasdale WHITFIELD was born in Blackhouse, Alston, Cul and was christened Jan 1800 in Alston, Cul.

IN JOHN WHITFIELDS (MY #1701) WILL OF THAT DATE."

Carol Minson found date of Jan 1800 as baptismal date of "Teasdale son of John Whitfield and Mary Stout."  Am using that for this record.
  M xix
Teasdale WHITFIELD was christened May 1812 in Alston, Cul.

BAPTISM: IGI gave this "Teasdale Whitfield s/o John Whitfield/Mary

MARRIAGE record of LYDIA SMITH to ELISHA DEXTER, sent to Myrtle  Hendricks  Jan 1992 by Mansfield town clerk, 4 South Eagleville Road,

Nov 1979 letter from Evelyn to Dane Dexter.  "Elisha & Lydia probably with all or most of their children were in
Ackworth, NH after the American Rev.  ...That twp was sparsely settled with no apparent village...narrow valley between two hills...what could have persuaded them to settle there?  They may have gone up the CT River from their home in Mansfield/Ashford section of CT, as  ckworth
was not far distant from the river.    I have not proved that they were there by land records, etc.  Abt 1964 I found a 98 year old woman who descended from Elisha and Lydia by their dau Phebe, our John's sister. Her mind was clear and sharp ...she let me copy her family papers.  From it I
found Lydia md late in life, Daniel Earl and she lies buried about 40 mi from my home in Avon, NY  (I live north of the city of Rochester in the town of Irondequoit.  Avon is south of Roch.)

i found the stone for a Lydia Earl standing in the same row with her dau Phebe, and Phebe's husb, also her son Asa Dexter with a few spaces having no stones between Lydia and the others.  I have not proven that this is our Lydia (Smith) Dexter.

I think it was this elderly woman who told me that they came from Ackworth, NY.  Elisha and Lydia had gone from Acworth to Essex/Clinton Co. with some of their children, but Phebe and her husband had come from Acworth to western N.Y.  I have not found when or where Elisha died, nor when Lydia came to western NY.  I took pictures of Lydia's stone which was fortunate as when I stopped by the grave last spring, the inscription had become completely obliterated."

"John Dexter's brother Amos died childless so his brothers and sisters, including John, were listed as next of kin. [both are children of Elisha and Lydia.]  I found no birth record for John, but beause he was listed with the other brothers and sisters, and because I had found record that the other brothers and sisters were born to Elisha and Lydia, that was proof that John was the son of Elisha and Lydia.  John's older and younger brothers and sisters were all from the same mother, Lydia, [therefore] there was no question of Elisha's having had two wives.  John had to have
been from the mg of Elisha and Lydia."

Oct 28, 1980 letter from Evelyn to me.  She thinks Lydia Smith's brothers may been "Samuel who went from Ashford, CT to Acworth, NY; and ABIJAH who resided in Ashford, CT.   She also discusses in detail, Ransom Smith.

Lydia Smith  had 12 children by Elisha Dexter Sr.  He died after 1794. She md. #2 Daniel Earl.  (She was 59 in 1794.  She lived to be 90. )

Lydia Smith, Dexter, Earl was buried Avon Cemetery, 15 feet from Sec B, Lot 60, Avon, New York (south of Rochester, NY).  Evelyn Dexter Arthur found her tombstone.  "Lydia. . .was buried very close to Phebe Dexter Markham and Asa Dexter.  It is noted she is called "wife of" apparently meaning Daniel Earl was still living.  . . .I [Evelyn Arthur] felt the Ahijah Smith to be part of Lydia Dexter's fam.  Thomas (4) was in Mount Hope Section in CT and I wondered if he had been in the Mount Hope Section in Bristol R.I.?"
(Carol Minson is not sure what she meant by last statement. "Thomas (4)" would be father-i-law to Lydia Smith Dexter.")

"John Dexter came to Upper Canada from New York State about 1796, in a
family group.  He received lot 43, concession. l, Markham as a Crown
Grant and in 1801 traded it for lot 38, con.l, Vaughan, then held by
Captain Richard Lippincott.  The eight Dexter children were among the
first pupils at the Cober (Langstaff) school and remained on the farm
until 1828 when the north 105 acres were sold to Wm Southby Gapper, a
British half pay officer, for 125 pounds.  Eventually parts of the south
half of lot 38 were also disposed of, but two of John Dexter's sons,
Ahijah and Hiram, remained in the area.  They operated saw mills on the
Don, at the back of lots 37 and 38, con l, Vaughan."

married before 1829.  John and Elisha, both, married in the year 1829.

QUESTION:  Which of John's  three wives was a Bainter?   Or,  was Andrew Bainter's sister married to a brother of John's? (Ahijah Dexter was John's younger brother.  We don't know his wife's maiden name.  Or, was one of John Dexter's sisters married to a Bainter?  This is
probably not true, because his sister Elizabeth died at age 18 and his sister Mary married a Nattrass.)

1796:  "John Dexter (Sr,) came to Upper Canada from New York State about 1796, in a
family group.  He received lot 43, con.l, Markham as a Crown Grant and in
1801 traded it for lot 38, con.l, Vaughan, then held by Captain Richard
Lippincott.  The eight Dexter children were among the first pupils at the
Cober (Langstaff) school and remained on the farm until 1828 when the
north 105 acres were sold to Wm Southby Gapper, a British half pay
officer, for 125 pounds.  Eventually parts of the south half of lot 38
were also disposed of, but two of John Dexter's (Sr.) sons, Ahijah and Hiram,
remained in the area.  They operated saw mills on the Don, at the back of
lots 37 and 38, con l, Vaughan."  From the Book "Old Time Thornhill" by Doris M. FitzGerald, Canada 1970,  pg 25. (There is more to the article about Dexters.)

1829:  I think that John B. and Elisha Dexter tried to get free title to their land
in 1829.  Amos and Hiram were married before 1829.  John and Elisha, both, married in the year 1829.

Thomas came  from the Swinhope area.  Three generations of his family
lived at Hopehead in the Swinhope area.  Summer of 1995, my husband
and I  walked into and around Hopehead.  A Cottge is still standing but
the roof is falling in on the southern part.  The north side has a
Bastle-"believed to be one of th oldest houses in the area."  Snapshots of
Hope Head and rear view of the bastle are in Jennifer Norderhaug's 1988
book, SPARTY LEA.

The IGI and parish registers are confusing because they state "Allendale,
St Peter and Allenheads Chapelries" as place of christening.
________________________________________________________

The three baptismal accounts from parish registers, listed at top of
these notes, proves that THOMAS  was the son of a TEASDALE, a miner,
who lived at SWINHOPE and that THOMAS was christened 9 Sept 1762,
in Allendale.

This is a problem.  I've rechecked Dr. Jeannette Young's records, Page 8,

that's all.
Lila's pg 49 of Ninebanks or West Allen Parish 1797-1812:

QUESTION - How do we know that Teasdale Whitfield b 1730 at
HOPEHEAD, is the father of Thomas b 1762, SWINHOPE?

ANSWER - One of the baptismal accounts from parish registers (Lila's),
listed at top of the notes of Thomas b 1762, shows that THOMAS  was
the son of a TEASDALE, a miner who lived at SWINHOPE, and that THOMAS
was christened 9 Sept 1762 at St. Cuthberts in Allendale.

QUESTION":  How do we know it was the Teasdale Whitfield born 1730?

ANSWER :  It appears that the father, TEASDALE, was the Teasdale who
was born in 1730 at HOPEHEAD,  because of the following:
A "Teasdale Whitfield"  married Mary DAWSON in 1761 at St.
Cuthberts, Allendale.  There are at least eight children in the IGI whose
parent's names are: Teasdale and Mary Whitfield.  Those eight children
fall mostly in two year intervals, consistent with birth patterns.  Of
those eight, four have a birthplace listed of HOPEHEAD, or nearby
SWINHOPEHEAD, and all are christened in Allendale.

THOMAS WHITFIELD born 1762, fits nicely at the top of those eight
children with a birthyear in the year following the 1761 marriage of
Teasdale Whitfield and Mary DAWSON.  He was also born in SWINHOPE and
christened at Allendale, which is fairly indicative of his being the son of
Teasdale born 1730 at HOPEHEAD.

The one problem that occurs, is that of the nine children mentioned
in the parish registers, THOMAS WHITFIELD born 1762, is the only child
listed as son of "TEASDALE."  The other eight are listed as children of
"THOMAS/MARY WHITFIELD."  It appears he was the first child.  Maybe
they just didn't have it all together, as yet.

Williams the famous Baptist of Providence, RI.  . . .I believe his name was
Gideon.  Another Dexter I believe had the name of Richard.  He was Irish
and one of his descendants was the eccentric, "Lord" Timothy Dexter, of
Newbury or Newburyport, Mass.  The fourth was a young boy who died
before he married so had no descendants.  He was in Plymouth and came
on the Mayflower, as I recall.  I have forgotten his first name."

RI Genealogical Register Vol 3, #4, p 360, April 1981: MEHITABEL
HALLETT of Portsmouth, will dated 26 Sep 1725, proved 8 Nov 1725, pg
49.  Mentions:  Sons John Dexter of Portsmouth, & Thomas Dexter of
Barrington.  Daughters Elizabeth Cole & unnamed dau mother of 4 Lawton
grandsons.
3 Grandchildren:  Thomas Dexter, John Dexter & Benjamin Dexter all
under 14, sons of son John Dexter of Portsmouth.
4 Grandchildren:  Job Lawton, Isaac Lawton, John Lawton, & George
Lawton all under 14.
Grandson John Dexter under 21 son of son Thomas Dexter.  Granddaughter
Mehitable Dexter.  (This shows John Dexter's(#94) birth to be
1704-1711.  Apparently if he had been "under 14" it would have been
noted.  So he was 14 to 21 years of age in 1725, which makes him born
1704-to 1711.   More likely 1711 since his youngest brother was born
1731.)

Carol Minson asked Evelyn if we needed the above information.
Evelyn ans: "Yes, I have thought the VT Dexters possibly brothers of
Elisha Sr.  These counties were right next to where Elisha lived in
Acworth NH, and the state line wasn't always where it is now."
