1803 Oct 8: John B. Dexter Jr. was born in Vaughan, York, Ontario, Canada, son of John and Jane (Niece) Dexter.
Family Bible of Mary Dexter Tourtilott.
1829 Sep 24: John married Margaret McQuarrie Dudgeon.
1835: "The first permanent settler was John Dexter. .
.emig from Canada in spring of 1835. . .staked claim on NW 1/4 of S 14,
north of Palestine Grove. In 1837 John B. Dexter's bro-i-l, Andrew
Bainter, located in same neighborhood." Historical Encyclopedia of IL and History of Lee Co., Munsell Pub Co, Chicago, 1940, pg 632-3.
QUESTION: Which of John's three wives was a Bainter? Or, was Andrew Bainter's sister married to a brother of John's? (Ahijah Dexter was John's younger brother. We don't know his wife's maiden name. Or, was one of John Dexter's sisters married to a Bainter? This is
probably not true, because his sister Elizabeth died at age 18 and his sister Mary married a Nattrass.)

1845 May 21: Margaret (McQuarrie) Dexter died at Amboy, Lee Co, IL, two weeks after the death of her 8 day old baby girl. This was her 10th child.. Margaret was 32 years old. Recollections of the Pioneers of Lee Co., Inez Kennedy, Pub, Dixon, IL. c1893.
"Another little girl, but eight days old has joined the other children
under the sunny espaliers of heaven. There is pain and sorrow and a
nameless dread around the place where the dying mother lies. Over the
prairies, the white faced, black horses of Dr. Adams are speeding to the
stricken home, and from Dixon, (IL) Dr. Nash is hurrying to meet him.
Mr.Thomas Dexter (later) writes: "I remember our faith that they could cure her,
and our poor, helpless prayers. I remember the mournful cortege of
friends who bore her body to that sand hill burial place; Rev Luke
Hitchcock's prayers and the presence of Father Birdsall, the Wassons and
Badgers and Doans and Hawleys and Frosts and others--all are
photographed on my memory." (Son, Thomas, was then, not quite 15.)
.
1845 July 22: JOHN B. DEXTER (left with 7 children ages 2 to 15,) married #2 Rebecca W. Pratt.
1847 Mar: Wife, Rebecca (Pratt) Dexter died..
1848 May 3: JOHN B. DEXTER married #3 Mrs. Leapha M. Palmer, at
BAINBRIDGE, CHENANGO CO. NY. She was the widow of his partner killed
in mine. (Recheck this source. There was a settlement called
"Bainbridge" next to Amboy in Lee Co. IL, where John Dexter had his
cabin. It would seem likely that they were md in Lee Co IL, not in NY.) Mg. performed by Smith of Masonville, 8 miles away.
She died 15 May 1863.
(My notes say source of John B. Dexter's 3 mgs, names and dates is pg 140 Evelyn. Can't find it.)

Miriam Dexter's father, Teasdale Dexter, remembered his Uncle John (Dexter) visiting in

his uncle was still "fighting in the wa"' in his later years, when he came
visiting.

1796: "John Dexter (Sr,) came to Upper Canada from New York State about 1796, in a
family group. He received lot 43, con.l, Markham as a Crown Grant and in
1801 traded it for lot 38, con.l, Vaughan, then held by Captain Richard
Lippincott. The eight Dexter children were among the first pupils at the
Cober (Langstaff) school and remained on the farm until 1828 when the
north 105 acres were sold to Wm Southby Gapper, a British half pay
officer, for 125 pounds. Eventually parts of the south half of lot 38
were also disposed of, but two of John Dexter's (Sr.) sons, Ahijah and Hiram,
remained in the area. They operated saw mills on the Don, at the back of
lots 37 and 38, con l, Vaughan." From the Book "Old Time Thornhill" by Doris M. FitzGerald, Canada 1970, pg 25. (There is more to the article about Dexters.)

1829: I think that John B. and Elisha Dexter tried to get free title to their land
in 1829. Amos and Hiram were married before 1829. John and Elisha, both, married in the year 1829.
