Some comparisons of  JOHN and WILLIAM HAGUE.         Which  brother is oldest, really?

John was born about 1750                        William  supposedly   b 1746.     William administrator of mother's estate 1767
John was married  17 May 1774.              William married   16 May 1780.
John  married before the Rev War.             William married afterwards.

John died 1 Dec 1802 Noble Co. OH        William died 1843, Holmes Co. OH
             age, abt 52 age  97??

However, it was William that was made administrator of  his mothers estate in  March 27,  1767.
This often an indication of eldest son,  and for now, carries the most weight.

"John Hague (Wm's father) came to Chester Co. Pa about 1747 from Holland."  Mrs. Kimber  (Perhaps Mrs. Kimber interpreted this from THE McCOMB fAMILY p 58  which has a blatant error.  It says William (b 1646-1688) son of David Haig and Hibernia Scholes. . .served as a private in. . .Chester Co PA Militia under Capt Joseph Mendenhall.. ."
ERROR!  The William who served as a private in Chester Co PA Militia wasn't born until 1746, a hundred years later than the William b 1646-1688 who was son of David Haig and Hibernia Scholes...

Mrs.Kimber says
p. 47 & 56  "John Hague (b abt 1710- [Wm's father]) came to Chester Co. Pa about 1747  from
Holland. p__ ?"  From Holland?   Perhaps Mrs. Kimber has made an assumption from pg 47 and 57 of  McCOMB'S FAMILY HISTORY.
Disclaimer by McComb on p. 58 of  McCOMB'S FAMILY HISTORY. says:  "David Haige (of mid 1600's pg 49) spent a part of his early life in Holland. . .This is probably where the Hagues of Holmes and Wayne Counties in OH had their records that William Hague (b 1746-1843_ and Ruth Mendenhall were from Holland."

_p.58:   "Family history of Hannah Hague McComb (1787-1887) also, that William Hague her father (1746-1843) was a descendant of William Haigue (1646-1688) who came to Pennsylvania with Penn's followers and helped to lay out the City of Philadelphia. He came with the first Quakers that came to Pennsylvania."

(COMMENT: I wonder if  "E. Springfield, OH"   is an error? C.M.  I also suspect the middle initial J of William b 1746 is an error.  The Darlington version proposed that his name might have been William John Hague.  I don't think Darlington accounted for  his brother, who was named "John."  (Recheck.)  The two brothers lived close to one another, apparently  migrated west together,  until  John died in 1802.

ACTION:  Look for an obituary on him.  Might be one, if there was a paper.  Check Anita Cheek Milner's list of Ohio newspapers.

Evelyn Van Noy wrote Dec 1977: "I have a small amount of data on the Hagues taken from the book "McComb Family History by Sarah McCombs. .privately printed (in) 30's. . .only a few copies.  Most of the information is about the immigrant WILLIAM HAGUE (some records HAIG) who came toPA with PENN ca 1681/2.  He was surveyor and laid out the plan for the streets of Philadelphia. . .also one of original proprietors of East Jersey,b in Bemersyde, Scotland and died 1688 in Burlington, West Jersey. He had at least 4 ch. but the data is rather unclear.  My line is from John Hague (either a son or grandson of above Wm).  If any of your Hagues were from PA (Chester,  Delaware or Fayette Co's);  or Ohio (Holmes,
Wayne, Crawford Co's); or Indiana (my data mostly from St. Joseph Co.),perhaps I have something you can use.  I have found very little data on the Hague family other than what is in the book."

ACTION:
l.  Look for Holmes Co, OH obit on William Hague.

2.  Get 1840 Census of Ber Twp., Wayne Co, OH, for Wm Hague p.211.  Is
he 94 years old, or is this a son/grandson?

3.   Find 1880 census on Hannah Hague McCombs. She died in 20 Jan 1887  a few months short of age 100,  in Napa, Napa, CA. Where did she say her father and mother were born?

4.  Need Chester Co PA county history.
Sons of Revolution has a book:  CHESTER CO. PA,  by Everts 1881.  The Hague's were in Kennet Twp.,  Pennsbury Twp, Birmingham Twp, and Oxford Twp, Chester Co. PA,  from AT LEAST 1747 to 1790 (probably much earlier,) that book should be checked further.  As well as other Chester Co PA histories and records.

5.  Chester Co was an original county,  created 1682 . (Early!)  Wonder if there are TOWN RECORDS available?

6.  Need to check all Chester Co Probate.  at SL?

7.  And what does SLFHL have on Chester Co.? Burial records?  We know there are wills available.  See FHLC.   SL (Salt Lake) films are probably our best and easiest repository.

8.  What Genealogical Society is closest to Chester Co?  They are most likely to have burial records.  A Philadelphia Gen Soc might be helpful.

9.   It appears that we need to check Cumberland Co. PA for further info on JOHN HAGUE because of: "1768-1770 CUMBERLAND CO. PA tax list of Hopewell Rate JOHN HAGUE p 34."  Any other Hagues there?

1"WILLIAM HAGUE md RUTH MENDENHALL  at Old Swedes Church May 16, 1780."

and Pat Mandeville sent a xerox copy of thesame two pages from" the Records of Holy Trinity Old Swedes Church of Wilmington, Delaware  that have the above data exactly--on it.

"JOHN HAGUE  md SARAH COLLINS  at Old Swedes Church   May 17, 1774."

A volunteer researcher for Old Swede's Church Foundation wrote Bill Potts in Feb 1992: "There is serious dought these (Hague) familes were members of Old Swedes, as there are no records of baptism of children by the name HAGUE.  There are several mgs under the name of Mendenhall, but again this does not mean membership in the church.
The Mendenhalls were a large prominent QUAKER FAMILY in this area and of southeastern PA.  When someone md "Out of meeting" they would go to the nearest - or furthest- church to be married.  Since there were not many churches in this area at the time, MANY QUAKERS were md at Old Swedes, but did not become members."

This is what Jan Walker wrote about Wm J. Hague; her source is the
GENEALOGY OF THE DARLINGTON FAMILY, I think:
"SPOUSE RUTH MENDENHALL, md 16 May 1780.  Moved from Chester Co. Pa

Jehu HAGUE was born 1802 in OH Or PA. He died after 1876. Jehu married Hannah FOREACRES on 17 Aug 1820 in Guernsey Co., OH. The marriage ended in divorce.

MARRIAGE: IGI shows "HAGUE, John or Jehu md Hannah Foreacres
17 Aug 1820, Guernsey Co. Ohio."

1820, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills Twp. (p 179a, I think.)
"Jehu Hague, 1 m 16-25, 1 f 16-25."  (James Foreacres is next door.)

1830, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills Twp. p 424:
"JOHN Hage, 1 m 20-30, 1 m 5-10, 1 f 20-30,   1 m 70-80." (Hannah's

This census seems consistent with 1830 census listed above.
(There is a Charles McQuade family  10 families away.)

1840, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills  Twp. p 313.
"JOHN (could be JEHU) Haage 30-40, l f 30-40.

2 f  10-15,

" JEHU Hague 30-40, l f 30-40.
(4 children) l m 15-20,   (Joseph?)
2 f  10-15,
1 f  15-20."  (Emiline?)
THIS RICHLAND TWP "Hague" IS A REPEAT OF THE  WILLS TWP "Hague"  in
the number and ages of children.
I see no similarity to the Hague "neighbors" in Richland and Wills Twp.
However there is a DAVID WOLFORD in  Millwood Twp who is also listed
in Richland Twp.  (He is listed with 2 less children in the latter.)

It appears that JEHU HAGUE lived in a corner of a township and was
visited by three census takers in the year 1840.  However, the question
remains whether there were 4 or 6 children in Jehu's family?
Another possibility is that he lived with another woman, besides Hannah.

Hannah FOREACRES [Parents] was born 1801 in , OH. She died 1881 in Of Salesville, Guernsey Co, OH and was buried 1881 in Leatherwood Cem., Guernsey Co., OH. Hannah married Jehu HAGUE on 17 Aug 1820 in Guernsey Co., OH. The marriage ended in divorce.

This is Shawn Paul's work.  He asked me to submit it for him.

BIRTH:  Approximated from the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880.

MARRIAGE: IGI shows "HAGUE, John or Jehu md Hannah Foreacres
17 Aug 1820, Guernsey Co. Ohio."

CENSUS:   1820 Aug 7, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills Twp. (p 179a, I think.)
"Jehu Hague, 1 m 16-25, 1 f 16-25."  (James Foreacres is next door.)

CENSUS:   1830 Jun 1, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills Twp. p 424:
"JOHN Hage, 1 m 20-30, 1 m 5-10, 1 f 20-30,   1 m 70-80." (Hannah's
father, James Foreacres?)

CENSUS:  1840 June 1, Ohio, Guernsey, Millwood  Twp. p 331.
"JOHN Hague 40-50, 1 f 40-50; (6 children)
l m under 5,
2 m 5-10,
1 m 15-20;   (Joseph?)
1 f 10-15,
1 f 15-20"  (Emiline?)
This census seems consistent with 1830 census listed above.
(There is a Charles McQuade family  10 families away.)

1840 Jun 1, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills  Twp. p 313.
"JOHN (could be JEHU) Hage 30-40, l f 30-40.
(4 children)
l m 15-20,   (Joseph?)
2 f  10-15,
1 f  15-20."  (Emiline?)
(John and James Foraker are listed 12 families away.)

1840 Jun 1, Ohio, Guernsey, Richland Twp. p 412.
" JEHU Hague 30-40, l f 30-40.(4 children)
l m 15-20,   (Joseph?)
2 f  10-15,
1 f  15-20."  (Emiline?)
THIS RICHLAND TWP "Hague" IS A REPEAT OF THE  WILLS TWP "Hague"  in
the number and ages of children. Perhaps the census taker(s) duplicated their work.
I see no similarity to the Hague "neighbors" in Richland and Wills Twp.
However there is a DAVID WOLFORD in  Millwood Twp who IS ALSO LISTED
in Richland Twp.  (He is listed with 2 less children in the latter census.)

It appears that JEHU HAGUE lived in a corner of a township and was
visited by three census takers in the year 1840.  However, the question
remains whether there were 4 or 6 children in Jehu's family?
Another possibility is that he lived with another woman, besides Hannah.

CENSUS:   1850, Ohio, Guernsey, Wright Twp. p 318b:
"John Hauge,  48 M, 1300, PA

Emiline "        23 F,  O
(I think they are still in the same location.  Wills Twp was divided into
Wills and Wright, I think.)

DIVORCE: Newpaper extract from Columbiana Co. OH:  "Hannah sued Jehu
for divorce when he was 76 yrs old, charge-adultery.  She was 78."
Joan V.S. June 23, 1989 letter.

DIVORCE:  of Hannah and Jehu Hague, Guernsey Co. OH, May term 1875,
22 May 1875. Book W. p.71 ff.   Two-paged document sent by Shawn-Paul,
now in HANNAH (FOREACRES) HAGUE notebook.  She received alimony and
Lot 20 and NE corner of Lot 19 on main street in Salesville, Guernsey Co.OH.

COURT RECORDS:  14 APR 1878:  Mandate from District Court of Guernsey
Co.  I think Hannah is trying to get Gooderel to pay money he owes her as
part of John Hague's alimony to her.  Gooderel bought land from Hannah
and John in 1874 for $4000.  This is probably payment for that purchase.

1880  CENSUS:  of Hannah (Foreacre) Hague (age 79?), Ohio, Guernsey,
Millwood Twp. Salesville,  p 180. (Hannah's father born Maryland,  mother
born Maryland says 1880 census.)

I did not find Jehu Hague.  Recheck  Richland Twp.
