Heavenly Father for the same, none of us have heard from Commerce for
nearly 12 months and we are very anxious to hear from you all there.
The branch of the Church here is in a cold state at this time.  It reminds
me of Peter and the rest when they went fishing.  We want, if it is
possible, for some Elder to come and set the Branch of Christ's Church in
order.  Elder Joseph Rose, did a good work here, and if he could come back
here again, I think he might do a great deal of good;  he was universally
liked, and if he can't come, we want some strong one, both in faith and
doctrine, to come here as soon as possible.'"  (Original on file.)

Younger sister Rebecca's journal:
"About this time my oldest sister, JANE, went to stay with Brother John
Taylor's Family who lived about twenty miles or more away.   She had
been there some time when one day a stranger came to our house and
introduced himself as Stephen Maloney.   He was dressed in a uniform
with brass buttons saying "U.S." on them showing he was a soldier in the
regular army.    His business that day was to ask the consent of Father
and Mother for their daughter to be his wife and to take my sister Ann
back with him.  Father was not at home at the time.  Mother said,  'She is
of age, she can choose for herself'.     I stayed at home.
It was the first real trouble I had ever known.   JANE had made my
dresses, took me with her and taught me how to walk, to dance and to
sing , and now I must give her up.   She was eleven years older than I
was, so at her marriage was about twenty-two years old.    . . . Mother
could not say words to comfort me so I crawled under the bed and sobbed
and cried and at times would kick the wall.  But after my first grief was
over I do not remember grieving so much after that.    When Father came
home he was very angry and was fixing to leave Texas.   JANE wrote for
us to come by and see them but Father did not go by, which was very hard
for Mother to bear.  But some one had prejudiced Father against Mr.
Maloney by saying he drank which was not so.  Father wrote later and
acknowledged he had done wrong."

abt 1851--MARRIAGE of Mary Jane

8 Dec 1851 at Bell Co., Texas, Ap for BOUNTY LAND RECORDS:  Richard
Hewitt, age 57 IN CAPT CAMPBELLS HORSE REG OF OHIO VOLUNTEERS
SEPT 1 TO NOV 1814.

abt 1851/2  We went from Texas back to Cherokee Nation  where we
lived a year near Tahlequah and Father put up hay.
John Taylor who had also moved to the Nation from Texas cut timbers for
a sawmill with Father in the winter of 1851 and 1852.

In the spring of 1852 we moved to McCoy's Prairie about fifteen miles
away, rented a place and kept a transit  hotel and a corral for cattle.
Father was doing some freighting for there was always plenty of work
for him to do as all the natives liked him.

1852-Rebecca Hewitt said" We lived fifteen miles from Tahlequah ---
Richard Hewitt died 15 September 1852.  (1853.)
I was now twelve years old and fatherless, with one brother three years
younger (RICHARD), a sister five years  younger  than   myself (LETTY),
ONE SISTER THREE YEARS OLDER (LEAH ANN) and a brother six years
older." (She didn't mention MARY JANE who was md.)

"Father died in September* and about the first of November we received
a letter from SISTER JANE asking for some of us to come to Texas after
her. She was then at Hamilton's Valley about five  or six hundred miles
away. Her husband had been called to Mexico and there was no means of
transportation for her in those days so my mother sent Will and I to get
her..
"There was a young man by the name of DOCKERY who proposed to assist
Mother in moving.  So when we left for Hamilton Valley, TEXAS,  Mother
took a trip up to Benton County, Arkansas and bought a small farm near
where the town of Gravette now stands but had not yet moved on the
place.
She then sent Mr. DOCKERY to meet us.  The anxiety she must have felt to
have to send for JANE and to see her and her babe was very great.  And in
our grief for Father we felt her lonely condition. What must have been
the feelings our dear mother had who only about six weeks after giving
up our dear Father, let two children undertake such a journey?  She
remanded us to our Heavenly Father who  has said  there is not a sparrow
falls to the ground that is without his care.  Before our journey was at
an end I did not think it quite so funny but I bore up bravely.

"My brother and I were fitted out with a three-horse team and about the
tenth of November we started to Texas with a load of apples.
WILL was eighteen years old in August and I would be thirteen the 22 day
of November(1853).   Just think of two children undertaking such a journey
through  the  Creek,  Chickasaw  and Choctaw  Nations,  but  this was the
only way we could reach our sister. Mother said she would send me for
protection as my brother might be killed or robbed but I feared no danger.
All my thoughts were to see my sister and her babe.   I did not think of
danger, no not so much as I now would to start on the train.   And truly
there was no danger.   Sometimes it snowed and the wind blew.  We fell
in with movers and had company most of the way.   I would often hear
people talking and saying, "What them two children going all that journey
alone?"  . . .  we landed safe and sound at Jane's house about twenty-five
days after we left home. We were overjoyed to see our sister and my
little nephew.  It seemed to repay me for all my troubles and my joy was
complete in an eight month old babe to love.

" The trip going back was more tedious than getting there but not so
lonesome.  One of our horses gave out and I had to walk  and lead or drive
one to keep it up with the wagon.  At one point the wagon had gone on to
find a place to camp and the horse would stop and nip every bunch of
grass he found by the side of the road.  And I could not budge it.
Sometimes I would be so far behind I could not see the wagon.   I was
dreadfully afraid and would wonder if I would ever see Mother again.
Many silent tears would fall to the ground and many prayers ascend on
high that God would help me.   JANE came to my rescue and I never was
so glad in my life to be relieved of such a task. I don't remember if we
had to lead the horse any more.  . . .
We soon were with Mother after an absence of two months. . . . It was
almost a year before my brother-in-law, Mr. Steven Maloney, got home".

Rebecca Hewitt's Journa continuesl:  "We lived in Arkansas over two years and in
1856, the spring of, we moved to Kansas, near Atchison, or rather
between Atchison and Leavenworth.   MY SISTER ANN MARRIED HARRISON
DOCKERY BEFORE WE LEFT Arkansas so I was now the only girl at home."
(So that marriage would have been about 1855/1856).

1893 Feb 21, Mary Jane Hewitt Maloney died.

They had the following children:

  M i
Henry Augustus MALONEY was born 2 Apr 1853 in Hamilton Valley, Hamilton, Texas. He died 1925 in , , Montana.

Calculation of birth of Henry A Maloney based on following story  from
Rebecca Hewitt's Journal:
10 November 1852 plus one month of travel = 10 Dec 1852
minus 8 months = April 1852

"Richard Hewitt died 15 September 1852 shortly before his fifty-fifth
birthday.
I was now twelve years old and fatherless, with one brother three years
younger, a sister five   years  younger  than   myself,  one sister three
years older and a brother six years older.   We had some property in

people during a blizzard and we had much to do.  One of their daughters
had just married and they were very anxious for me to live with them,
but nothing  was  any   inducement  to  me.   Dear readers, the prayers of
our dear Mother were surely heard and answered for we landed safe and

better.   I do remember being on horseback at the head of the wagon and
while looking back and talking the horse stumbled and threw me over its
head.   I seemed to light on my nose and it hurt so bad that I felt it for
some time.

We soon were with Mother after an absence of two months."

James PARKER was born about 1778 in Of Trenton, , New Jersey. He died 20 Jul 1821-4 Oct 1821 in , Clermont Co., OH. James married Leah.

Oct 12, 2000 letter from Lois:
One of the problems with researching the Parkers is that there was more than one Parker family in Clermont Co and also in next door Brown Co.  I think I"ve looked  at all of them at one point or another.
"I see that you have listed Leah's maiden name as
Harding.  I have serious doubts that we will find it to be her maiden name.  I know your family stories say Jarusha's father was Richard Nelson Parker and her mother Rhoda Harding.  I think we are confident that her father was actually James Parker [Sr] whose wife was Leah.  . A FAMILY STORY OF MINE SAID JAMES PARKER MARRIED A MASON.   I have yet to find anything to back that up. An 1820 census shows James Parker and the immediate neighbors (including a Mason) that I found  interesting.

"1.  The Mason family listed, certainly could be the parents of Leah IF, I repeat IF her maiden name is Mason.  I have looked for additional info on this Mason family and have not found anything yet.

"2. The ages of the Parker children are interesting and I figure they are
as follows: Male under 10 - probably Able
Male 10-16 probably William
Male 16-26  perhaps James (Jr) however see discussion below.
Male 45 and over James (Sr)
Female under 10 - probably Rebecca
Female 16-26 probably Jarusha
Female 45 and over Leah

" 3.  Lydia had already married William Baldwin and therefore would
probably not appear in the census with her parents.

" 4.  My first reaction was/is that the male 16-26 is James Jr.  My
doubts/indecision are based on the following.
a.)  According to the deed list a James Sr deeded land to a James Jr in
1817--therefore it is likely he would be living on that land, not with
his parents.  Of course, these James may not be our James.

b.)  A James Parker married a Mary McKnutty/McKnulty on 20 Feb 1817.  Is
this my James?  I don't know.  It would certainly make sense that it was the
James Jr. of the land deed -i.e. Pappa deeded land to son when he md.

c.)  The thing that for me argues against the James Parker who married
Mary McKnutty/McKnulty being my James Parker is that the oldest child of
my James and Mary (_____) Parker was born c 1823.  It seems unlikely to
me that my James and Mary would have waited 6 years to have a child.  Of
course, there is always the possibility that there were children who
did not survive.  I have not found Mary Parker in the 1830 census.  She
would have been a widow since she did not marry Thomas Thornsburgh until
Dec of 1830.  Assuming my James is not the James who married Mary
McKnulty then the male 16-26 in the Census is undoubtedly my James.

Lois Darrough sent data on 7 children of James Parker and Leah Oct 2000.

LOIS DARROUGH: : LADMLW@worldnet.att.net> sent this:

1.  James Parker (the elder) was in Clermont Co as early as 1803.
He's probably the James Parker who is in Whitt's 1802 census. Source:
Clermont County, Ohio Pioneers 1798-1812 -- A substitute Census for
1800-1810, Aileen M. Whitt.  There are 11 Parkers listed in the book
including a Richard.  It says he appears in a deed index in 1812.

2. In 1820 Census, Clermont Co, Williamsburg Twp, Roll 89, p. 3, James
Parker is enumerated next to a Joseph Mason, Thomas Thornburg, and
Isaac Fenton.  A family story has James Parker (unknown wheither the
elder or the younger) married a Mason.  Mary Parker, widow of James
Parker (the younger) married Thomas Thornburg 23 Dec 1830 (CC
Marriage Records Book 2 p 387).  A daughter of James (the younger) and
Mary Parker, married a Fenton.

3. The will of James Parker (the elder) was written Jul 20, 1821 and
went to probate Oct 4 1821.  The will names wife Leah, son James
(called the eldest son), children William, Rebecca (called youngest
daughter), Abel.  From the wording these children apprear to be under
21).  The will also names daughers Jarusha Parker, Lydia Baldwin,
formerly Lydia Parker.  Names wife Leah and son James Executors.  Land
he owned in James Johnstons Survey No 5252 was left jointly to sons
James and William.

Picture taken at Elite Studio in Marysville, KS.
All three women look very sad, in their eyes as well as their mouth.
Their mother, Matilda (Gross) Strange, died in 1886.  Alice was 21 in
1886, Nancy Jane was 36, and Susan was 31 in 1886.  Yes that looks
about right.   It seems likely that their Mother's death was the occasion
for their get-together.
