1818-BAPTISM: 1813-1921 Baptisms at Allendale & Chapelry of

1854-1858-BIOGRAPHY: from Dianne Hughes: "Edward. . .paid his own fare
to Australia in 1854 as a cabin passenger.  Sarah and the children stayed
in NBL until [June] 1858, when they also migrated to Australia.  . .
.Edward mined for gold on the Ballarat gold fields for awhile.  He moved
to the Creswick gold fields where he settled at Red Streak, North
Creswick, near the Australia mine where he worked as an engine man.
Another three children were born at North Creswick. . .     Edward and
Sarah with children John and Edward moved to select land on the Terrick
Terrick Plains, near Bendigo Victoria.. . .Some of the descendants of John
and Edward still live in the Bendigo area, while some of Thomas and
Leah's descendants live at Creswick."

1892-DEATH & BURIAL PLACE from Dianne Hughes' letter of Apr 7, 1992.

1892-OBIT:  "Whitfield- Ashton Moss  Farm, Terricks, . . .Edward

farm on the Terricks Plains,. . .It is about 14 yrs since Mr. and Mrs.

Dianne also sent a lovely religious poem (filed WHI0321) that Edward
had written to his wife from Liverpool when on his way to Australia in
1854. (It evidently was in Hannah Whitfield Hymers possession at one
time.)

BIRTH:    "SARAH CHESTER was born 3rd Jan 1819 at Wolf Cleugh, North.
Sarah was the dau of Joseph Chester and Sarah Hewart (Stewart?) who
were married on the 6th June 1812 at Allendale.  Joseph was a miner."
Source:  Letter from Dianne Hughes, 10 March 1992, "Tolloora" Kings
Court, Teesdale, Vic 3328, Australia.   Hannah Coates and John whitfield
were her 3rd great grandparents.  Sarah Chester and Edward Whitfield
were her 2nd great grandparents.  I'm not sure of her sources.  She may
have gotten most of it from the IGI.
She gives a listing of 8 children of Edward and Sarah(Chester) Whitfield
with full birth dates and birth places, 5 of which are in the IGI.  There is
a conflict with one of them, which I will note later.  She also gives
marriages for 7 of them and a death date for the 8th.  The latter would
not be on the IGI, of course.  Diane may have gotten this data from a
Family Bible.

MARRIAGE:  IGI.  "Edward Whitfield [md] Sarah Chester 8 Jun 1844,
Ninebanks."

DEATH & BURIAL PLACE from Dianne Hughes' letter of Apr 7, 1992.

OBITUARY:  WHI0321A..."  24 Sep 1901. DEATH OF MRS. WHITFIELD,
MOTHER OF THE MAYORESS, MRS. W. P. NORTHCOTT AND OF MR. THOMAS
WHITFIELD OF NORTH CRESWICK, WHO DIED AT THE RESIDENCE OF HER
DAUGHTER, MRS. HYMERS, WARNUP.....deceased 85."

They had the following children:

  F i Hannah WHITFIELD was born 8 Jun 1845 and died 13 Jun 1925.
M ii Thomas WHITFIELD was born 16 Jul 1847 and died 24 Dec 1928.
  F iii
Sarah WHITFIELD was born 1 Sep 1849 in Broadlee, W. Allendale, Nbl, Eng. She died 14 Aug 1860 in Creswick, , Australia and was buried in Creswick, , Australia.

Here is one of the conflicts:

When I was at Ninebanks, West Allendale in 1987, I made a hand written
copy of the Whitfields from the "Parish register for 1813-1921."  Only
two of Edward and Sarah (Chester's) children were listed on that
register, which is unusual, considering the first four children were born
at Broad Lee.   Here is what I extracted:

Sep 7, 1849
Sarah, (d of) Edward and Sarah Whitfield (of) Broad Lee, miner.
and twin
Thomas, (s of) Edward and Sarah Whitfield (of) Broad Lee, miner.

Diane has listed the first four children as born at Broadlea, and the IGI
also lists those 4 children as born Broadlee.

However, there is a discrepancy  between the IGI, Diane's record and this
record I copied from the Ninebanks register regarding the birth dates of:
the twins, Thomas and Sarah and the next child, Leah.

It appears that the person who sent in those first 5 names to the IGI
lives in New Zealand.

In her letter of May 1992, Diane sent pictures of all the children of
Edward and Sarah Whitfield, except Sarah.  But she thought she had that
picture somewhere.
