E.MORRIS wrote Apr 1961:  "MRS. CHASE has supplied me with a great
deal of info on WM 4, & MOSES 4, who stayed in Jackson Co.. . .MRS.
CHASE'S father was DAVID MOSES (5) HAYES, but after she established
her DAR line back to MOSES(2) HAYS, they changed the spelling back.
Her parents lived at Stockton, Kansas, and there was another HAYS
family there, so they changed the spelling.  Later Mrs. CHASE and her
mother did research so they could join DAR and MRS. CHASE changed the
spelling back again.  Write: MRS WARREN CHASE, Alexandria, Nebr.'
Quite a few Hays in Ohio changed to HAYES about the time PRES HAYES
began to campaign, just after the Civil War.
Mrs. CHASE was the first DAR on the line of MOSES (2) and is descended
through THOS (3) so should be of more help than MRS. SCHALL who is
descended through JAMES (3).  The procedure is to get the DAR member to
write to the Registrar-General of the DAR in Wash. D. C. to give
permission to have her papers photostated and sent to the prospective
member.  Then you send them two dollars to the Reg Gen and they would
send the copy.  However, I've thought of something easier - Just send
two dollars to the Reg Gen for a copy of the papers of MARGARET ANN
GROUND TURNER (Mrs. ROBERT F.)  She resigned from DAR and you will not
have to have the note for a dropped line.  She is a niece of MRS CHASE.
Her papers would be more recent and probably contain more data.  She is
on p. 73, no 37 of the HAYS data I sent you.  If you really need her DAR
number, I think I have it somewhere.  ADDRESS: 1776 D. St., N. W.
