E. MORRIS- May 1971:  "I hope the account tells about his children.  I
went to Brookville, Franklin Co., Ind. a few years ago.  The caretaker at
the cemetery showed me where the family was buried but there are no
tombstones.  We have the 1850 census of IN here, but he wasn't md till
1849, consequently no children in that census.  I need the 1860.  JOSEPH
had a brother, ASA HAYS.  I was able to find five children for him.

very good this past year.  The descendants of Moses (2) daughter EDITH
who m. DAVID HAYS of Ohio finally turned up.  In 1965, I published the
MOSES HAYS Bible records. . .letter from JOHN HASTINGS of Cleveland, O.
saying that he is a descendant of DAVID and EDITH.  .  .his parents, REV &
MRS. WENDLING HASTINGS, live in Topeka.  The children of DAVID and
EDITH (HAYS) HAYS were all born in Cross Creek or Smith twps.,
Washington Co., PA.  I found the baptism of the last four at Cross Creek
Presb. Church a few years ago.  EDITH had 12 children, but two of the
girls died young.
(They) are to be found in 1850 and 1860 in McArthur, Vinton Co., Ohio;
Cumberland, Guernsey Co. Ohio; and Homer, Champaign Co., Ill.  At least
four of them were carpenters."

E. MORRIS wrote Feb 1971:  "I'm compiling the line of Edith(3) Hays
(Moses 2, David 1) who m. DAVID HAYS JR. of Cross Creek twp.  I can't
find any connection with our Smith twp., family.
The family is huge of course since DAVID & EDITH had 9 sons and 1 dau

ELIZABETH(4) HAYS, (EDITH 3, MOSES 2, DAVID 1)

1807-abt EDITH HAYS md DAVID HAYES.

1811, ELIZABETH born  in Washington Co. Pa. either at Cross Creek or
Smith townships.
1834  ELIZABETH HAYS md. WILLIAM DAVIS.
1834   moved then to FAIRMONT, ILL.
they had many children born Fairmont.
Wealthy couple.

1850 or before, DAVID HAYS, JR, ELIZABETH'S father,. md 2nd ELEANOR.
Probably MRS. ELEANOR BRANCH as there were two girls named
BRANCH in the McArthur 1850 census with them. I don't know what
happened to 2nd wife & step-daus, but DAVID JR. is in the
1860 Census of ILL twice.  He is at Homer, Champaign, Co., ILL with
youngest son SAMUEL & family-----3 months later with his dau,
ELIZABETH (& family) at Fairmont, Vermillion Co., ILL.  Homer &
Fairmont are only 9 miles apart.  The cem between contains many
of EDITH'S desc.
1869  DAVID JR. d and is buried in a family cem near Muncie in
Vermillion Co Ill, with oldest son, JOHN & family.

They had the following children:

  F ii Edith Jane DAVIS was born 24 Jan 1837.
  M iii David Cook DAVIS was born 16 Nov 1838.
  M iv Henry DAVIS was born 5 May 1841.
  F v Jemima DAVIS was born 10 Aug 1843.
  M vi William Franklin DAVIS was born 11 Jul 1847.
  F vii Lydia E. DAVIS was born 22 May 1852 and died 15 Mar 1920.

James HAYS [Parents] was born 3 Jun 1812 in Washington Co, PA. He died 22 Sep 1860 in Homer, Champaign, Ill and was buried in Bement, Piatt, IL. James married Mary MILLER on 7 Dec 1837 in Zanesville, Muskingum, OH.

E. Morris wrote Nov 1969: "The research for the Hays history has been
very good this past year.  The descendants of Moses (2) daughter EDITH
who m. DAVID HAYS of Ohio finally turned up.  In 1965, I published the
MOSES HAYS Bible records. . .letter from JOHN HASTINGS of Cleveland, O.
saying that he is a descendant of DAVID and EDITH.  .  .his parents, REV &
MRS. WENDLING HASTINGS, live in Topeka.  The children of DAVID and
EDITH (HAYS) HAYS were all born in Cross Creek or Smith twps.,
Washington Co., PA.  I found the baptism of the last four at Cross Creek
Presb. Church a few years ago.  EDITH had 12 children, but two of the
girls died young.
(They) are to be found in 1850 and 1860 in McArthur, Vinton Co., Ohio;
Cumberland, Guernsey Co. Ohio; and Homer, Champaign Co., Ill.  At least
four of them were carpenters."

"MacArthur is 55 miles from Zanesville, Ohio.  In 1858 the James Hays
family came by covered wagon to Homer, Illinois from near McArthur
Ohio.  Two years later the father, James, died in Homer and his family
moved to 2-3/4 miles north of Bement, Illinois.  Inscription on parents
tombstone:  "Watch therefore for ye know neither the day nor thehour
when the SON OF MAN cometh."

       The following info needs to be rechecked.  I have the mg of James
Hays to Mary Miller because of the above information.  (IGI too?)  Plus
the children's names- ie:  Henry MILLER HAYS.  And Rachel and Abram
could well have been named after grandparents.  I'm leaving the computer
with Mary Miller as the wife of James Hays.

Mary MILLER was born 3 Mar 1818 in Muskingum Co., OH. She died 9 Feb 1907 in Bement, Piatt, IL and was buried in Bement, Piatt, IL. Mary married James HAYS on 7 Dec 1837 in Zanesville, Muskingum, OH.
