1915   JAMES MERVIN HAYS' STORY as told to Lewis A. Coleman at
Indianapolis, Indiana Aug 31, 1915.  James age 73-in 1915. His
statements re his  siblings are in their indiv notes.
James' story:  "My father, Adam Hays, was born in Pennsylvania, 1807
January 6.  He was the son of _______Hays, farmer who was born in
MIDDLETOWN, PA, and who died about middle age as a result of heavy
lifting.  Father and Mother were both of Scotch-Irish descent.  Adam
Hays was an only child."
"Adam Hays md Mary Anne Messenger, when she was 16 years old."
(She b. (Apr 14, 1811,  + 16=1827)    "Her father was known as Uncle
Dave Messenger.  She was born near Middletown, Ohio.  They moved from
there to Knox Co. Ohio.   At the time Adam Hays and wife came to
Illinois, Messengers came to Indiana, but where they located I could not
say." "When they came to Knox Co., Ohio, they settled 6 miles from Mount
Vernon.  They left there and went to LaSalle Co., Ill and was there 8 or
10 years, and from there went to Marshall Co., IA remained there about 2
years and went to Lavada, Colorado, and remained there about 2 years
and then came back to Marion Co., IA."
(Carol finds no Lavada on map. Do they mean "Arvada" Colo?)
"While in Colorado, Adam Hays prospected in gold and silver mining.
He made considerable money but don't know how much.  He had some
money when he came back to Marion Co. IA.  He then went to farming and
farmed until his death.  He was helping his son break a colt when he
about about 88 years old.  His son was plowing, the father had a hammer
in his hand and took the handle of it and punched the colt to make it get
back in the furrow, and it kicked him with both hind feet, striking him in
the breast.  They picked him up and carried him into the house, put him in
a chair and he died in about a minute, without speaking."
"He was buried in the Concord Graveyard near Knoxville, Iowa."
"He was the father by his first wife of 12 children."
