1831: Sarah Bishop md Carmi Smith. . . first postmaster of Fairfield
Twp., at Layman, Ohio, having the post office in his store. He was a
justice of he peace for 16 yrs. . . prominently identified with the
Methodist Church.
They had 8 children: GILBERT, ANGELINE, TALMA, a son, LUCY, HANNAH,
ESTHER JANE and SARAH CLORINDA SMITH.
1840: Carmi Smith lived in Homer Twp, next door to Elisha and H Alderman

The first store was kept by Harvey Smith & Son on the sw corner of Main
and Front streets (of Fairfield Twp.) At the same time Gilbert and Smith
kept a store on the southeast corner of the same streets.
