BIRTH: dates came from Iva Campbell's Bible Record. Iva (Strange)

BIRTH: Nancy Jane Strange b 4 March 1850, Child #2 of Rolan and
Matilda Strange- born in Clay Co. MO. Iva Campbell's Bible Record.
LA Library has a book on Clay County. pg 425:
"between 1820 & 1828. . . early settlers, William Strange." Is this an
Uncle of Rolan Strange or of Nancy's?
I've checked the 1840 census of Clay Co. Mo. Nil.
and the 1850 census of Clay Co. Mo....did not find anything. Geri and I did
this years ago, before the census indexes. Check the earliest (1830?)
census indexes for Clay Co. Mo for Stranges.
Rockport, Atchison Co. formed from Clay Twp in 1851. Atchison Co., Mo.
History 1882, Pg. 1017: "In Oct 1856" there was one of the trial jurors
by the name of CALVIN STRANGE.
Be sure and check for Stranges in1850 and 1860 census index of
Atchison Co. MO.
Child #6 (Nancy's brother, Marion, born 1858 in, Rockport, Atchison Co.
Mo. So Nancy possibly lived there also.

1886 abt: "ALLIE, NANCY JANE, SUSAN. ALL STRANGES." Picture taken at
Elite Studio in Marysville, KS.
All three women look very sad, in their eyes as well as their mouth.
Their mother died in 1886. Alice was 21 in 1886, Nancy Jane was 36,
and Susan was 31 in 1886. Yes that looks about right. It seems likely
that their Mother's death was the occasion for their get-together.
Wonder why Rachel, the eldest, was not with them. Maybe that is what
prompted Rachel to have her picture taken. (See notes re her picture.)
Rachel would have been 38 in 1886.

1898: Nancy (Strange) Hewitt and daughter Hettie Hewitt. About
I think this was taken same time as Hettie's marriage picture.
Hettie was 26 at the time of her marriage in 1898 and her mother was
46 at that time.
TO DO! Get the rest of the census on this family. There should be an
1900, and 1910 and 1920 on them. Richard and Nancy Jane died and are
buried in Jennings, Pawnee OK. Don't know when they moved there. Their
dau, Hettie md in 1897 in Marshall Co. KS, so they are in KS till then,
probably.
PICTURE: Snapshot of Nancy Jane on a trip to Colorado about 1910. She
is with two othe women all are sidesaddle on a burro. Nancy is 59-60.
PICTURE: Snapshot-about 1914. Lillie B. Hewitt 37, William S. Hewitt
45, Ruth Hewitt 7, Richard Hyde Hewitt 70. Probably at Jennings, OK.
Comment: I think Nancy Jane Hewitt was in this picture previously, and
was cut out of the picture.
DEATH of husband 1921 at Jennings, Pawnee, OK.
PICTURE: Snapshot of Nancy Jane. Picture taken by Etta Mae Hewitt (her
grandson's wife) in 1927. Nancy is 76. Etta Mae was 23.
PICTURE: Snapshot-1928 LILLIE BELLE HEWITT age 51, William S.
Hewitt 59, and his mother, Nancy Jane Hewitt 77. Probably at Jennings,
OK.
PICTURE: snapshot of Nancy (Strange) Hewitt, Marion Strange and Alice
(Strange) Miller. they are standing up next to a garage or barn. About
1933: Nancy would be 83 (she doesn't look 83. Well, maybe her hands
do.) Marion would be 75 and Alice 68 in 1933.
Etta Mae Hewitt wrote on the back of this picture: "This was the last
time I saw Marion & Alice. I think this was in the early 1933.
PICTURE: snapshot of Nancy (Strange) Hewitt, her sister, Alice (Strange)
Miller, and Hettie (Hewitt) Dexter. Etta said "The last time I saw these
three together before Nancy Jane Hewitt the summer of 1934."
PICTURE: snapshot of Nancy Jane (Strange) Hewitt. She is holding a small
boy, about two years old. Probably a great grandson, a Brooks, or a
Twidwell. Nancy looks at least 80 here, maybe 85--1935?
Original picture in possession of Ralph Dexter. The picture was taken in
front of Ralph's home in Marysville, KS. Ralph didn't know who it was
but "remembers he liked her a lot." It was his grandmother! She died in
1940, in Jennings, OK. He probably didn't see her much.
PICTURE: Snapshot of Nancy Jane about 1938. Nancy is 87.
DEATH: (Death Certificate filed with Hewitt data.) Nancy Jane Hewitt
died Aug 2, 1940 at Jennings, Pawnee, OK. BURIAL: 4 Aug, 1940, Jennings

Correspondence from Iva Glynn (Strange) Campbell, eldest child of
Marion and Mary Alice (Deering) Strange. Iva Campbell lived at 2220
Austin St. Annandale, Va. in 1959 and was age 79 then. Probably died in
Annandale.
Letter to Carol from Iva Campbell (cousin of William S. Hewitt), Nov
1957: "Will Hewitt and I were very close as cousins. He seemed almost
like a brother to me. He was such a good person. Used to stay with us
and my grandfather Rolin Strange quite a lot when he was a young man.
Worked on the farm for my grandfather. Aunt Jane was my favorite Aunt.
Guess because she always made over me so much as did her mother, my
grandmother Matilda. I was six years old when she died and can
remember all the family being there the children and grandchildren and
their lovely big farm house which was close to the big blue river not far
from the Hutchinson place and the Hutchinson Mill. . . I can remember
being over to grandfathers and grandmothers and how I loved grandma.
And I can remember going to spend a week or two during the summer
with my Aunt Jane. They lived on a farm and I used to love to go down to
the spring and get a good cool drink of spring water. They used to carry
their drinking water . . .I can remember how Aunt Jane and Willie as I
canned him used to spoil me and were so good to me that no wonder I
liked to go to my Aunt Janes. . .Aunt Jane was the third child of
grandfather Rolin and Nancy Strange and my father was their sixth child
I find according to our family Bible Record. . . I traced our family history
as far as my grandfather Rolin Strange & his two brothers from the . .
.history of the Stranges which is on file at the Congressional Library
here in D. C. . . .we do have a most interesting background and a history to
be proud of. . . Both the Strange & Campbelll's have their family crest. . .
The information that I am sending you now I have taken from our family
Bible record." (Iva Campbell)
1992: "The Hutchison house and mill are still out on the highway west of town. The house is owned by a family and is in good condition. The old part of the mill has been torn down, but the newer part still is in use as storage, the co-op is there." (Helen Kracht.)
