Letter to Carol from Iva Campbell (cousin of William S. Hewitt), Nov
1957: "Will Hewitt and I were very close as cousins.  He seemed almost
like a brother to me.  He was such a good person.  Used to stay with us
and my grandfather Rolin Strange  quite a lot when he was a young man.
Worked on the farm for my grandfather.  Aunt Jane was my favorite Aunt.
Guess because she always made over me so much as did her mother, my
grandmother Matilda.  I was six years old when she died and can
remember all the family being there the children and grandchildren and
their lovely big farm house which was close to the big blue river not far
from the Hutchinson place and the Hutchinson Mill. . . I can remember
being over to grandfathers and grandmothers and how I loved grandma.
And I can remember going to spend a week or two during the summer
with my Aunt Jane.  They lived on a farm and I used to love to go down to
the spring and get a good cool drink of spring water.  They used to carry
their drinking water . . .I can remember how Aunt Jane and Willie as I
canned him used to spoil me and were so good to me that no wonder I
liked to go to my Aunt Janes. . .Aunt Jane was the third child of
grandfather Rolin and Nancy Strange and my father was their sixth child
I find according to our family Bible Record. . . I traced our family history
as far as my grandfather Rolin Strange & his two brothers from the . .
.history of the Stranges which is on file at the Congressional Library
here in D. C. . . .we do have a most interesting background and a history to
be proud of. . . Both the Strange & Campbelll's have their family crest. . .
The information that I am sending you now I have taken from our family
Bible record.

CHILDREN:   July 1962 phone conv with Flossie Jessup.
I asked if Iva had more children than Wendell?  "No"
Who would probably have the family Bible?  "Wendell."

1960 Aug 15:  DEATH: of Iva Campbell.    Jan 7, 1962 note from her son Wendell W.
Campbell regarding Iva's death date.  ". . .Mother's passing away August
15, 1960. . .She had just celebrated her 80th birthday on July 3rd.  Also
she had made a trip to the Mother church in Boston during May. . ."

(Comment: the biography of Charles Strange correlates with this 1850
census.  If Charles was 5 in 1850, that = b 1845.  If  his mother Jane
(Traylor) Strange was 23 in 1850, she must have been just 18 when
Charles was born, and his father was 43?  I wonder at the story behind that.
(Comment:  In 1850, Rolan Strange was 24 years old.   Robt and Virginia
Strange,  listed above, might be full siblings to Roland Strange who was
born 1826.  There may have been more children from first mg.)

1855 abt:  Samuel md  #3 Elizabeth Cheney-Dalton of VA  probably married about 1855.

TO DO:  CHECK to see if there is an 1860 census of the Samuel Strange
family in Doniphan Co. KS?  May help to determine death date of Jane and
mg to Elizabeth.

They had the following children:

  M i Charles S. STRANGE was born 25 Mar 1845 and died 20 Dec 1917.
M ii William Henry STRANGE was born 19 Aug 1848 and died 19 May 1920.

  M iv
Haywood STRANGE was born 1852.

1852:  Haywood b according to census below, and evidently died bef 1865.
One wonders at the unusual name.  Could it have been "Howard" and misinterpreted by the census taker as Haywood?

Sharon Capezza:   "I  have Elizabeth as d/o Lewis and Lucinda Dalton in VA.  This is a branch of the Daltons that has many Cheney middle names.  I'm not sure if Elizabeth’s mother, Lucinda, was a Cheney or if there is another connection to the family.  Need birth records to confirm."

(John Mayer’s STRANGE OF HOWARD p. 195 indicates Elizabeth Dalton’s maiden name was Chaney.  However, the 1850 census of Carroll Co. VA  lists “Elizabeth Dalton age  20”  along with siblings and Lewis and Lucinda Dalton as her parents --- no Chaney/Cheney name mentioned.    No Chaney/Cheney’s listed in the 1850 census of Carroll Co at all. )

July 29 from Sharon C:  There is still a question on whether she (Elizabeth’s)  maiden name was actually Cheney Dalton.  There are a number of Cheney Dalton's in Virginia at that time, and there is an Elizabeth among them.  Do you have anything concrete that shows her being a Cheney?

Carol:  No, and I don't know the source of "Cheney/Chaney.”  I don’t know where it came from.

Since I saw the 1850 census of “Elizabeth Dalton” I have serious doubts that she was named  Cheney or  Chaney.  However, her mother’s maiden name could have been  Chaney.

There are 27  Chaney families  in VA in the 1850.  Seventeen of  those Chaney families are in Pittsylvania Co. VA which is on the eastern border of  Halifax Co.

There are no Cheney’s  in the 1850 Census of VA!.   There are Chaney’s in 1850 Census of VA in other counties.  But No Chaney’s at all in 1850 census of  Carroll Co. where Elizabeth and Samuel lived.

(Sharon, might you have anything to add to this discussion and to these census figures?

Elizabeth was born in Carroll Co., VA.   Her birth years as listed in census are confusing.  Her husband, Samuel’s birth years in the censuses are equally confusing. But I print them for you, the reader, because (1) they prove you can’t always depend on census data, and

(2) they are very interesting.  She is listed as 30 in 1860 census,  30 in 1865,  32 in 1870,  47 in 1875, 48 in 1880 and 52 in 1885.  Actually, she was born  Jun 10, 1830.

1846: (Picture of Elizabeth at 16 sent by Shirley   Sep 11, 2002.).

"The picture that I have of Elizabeth Dalton was taken at 16. She was taken under the wing of the Tyler family for whom she worked to help take care of Nellie. In appreciation they wanted to educate her---got her clothes-- had her picture taken and so on....Her brothers took her from the Tylers,  for what reason I do not know and brought her home wherever that was.”   (Shirley Ethington)

(I looked for “Tylers” in the 1850 census of Carroll Co, VA. found none.  They probably had moved on.  cm.)

( Helen Kracht wrote abt 1992.)

"There is a Cheney grave right next to a Strange grave in the cemetery at Prospect Hill, Blue Rapids, KS.   It would seem that there is a link, but when I asked Helen about it, she didn't seem to know who that was or if they are related.  Since several of the Strange graves are without headstones, it is hard to tell exactly where they are buried in the cemetery." The pictures make them look stern and glassy eyed.  She has very black hair.   If marriage picture, she is 25, and he is 53.

(1864 *Centralia, KS or MO?  That place name occurs in both KS and MO.  Since the Brims and Stranges lived in Kansas, and Cetralia is not too far away, Kansas seems most likely.  But the Jesse James accounts on the web say –Centralia, MO.  That doesn’t make it correct, however.  Shirley, does your source specify “Kansas?”)

1891 Dec 6:  Death of Elizabeth Dalton Strange.  (Obit:)

"Died at her residence in Marysville (KS), Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Strange, aged 61 years.
Mrs. Strange's maiden name was Dalton.
She was born in Carroll Co, VA,   Jun 10, 1830
and was md to Mr. Strange in Jun 1855.

In 1857,  Mr. and Mrs. Strange moved to KS and to Marshall Co in 1870 taking a homestead in the NE part of the Blue Rapids City Twp.  Of late years they have resided in Marysville, where after a sickness lasting through the past summer, (she) passed away. . .She leaves a husband, six children and six step-children.     Buried in Blue Rapids Twp on the old homestead."

(Apparently Lucinda b 1859, d/o Elizabeth and Samuel, died abt 1879 and therefore she was not counted in the “six children” above.  Samuel  had at least 10 children prior to marrying Elizabeth .  Four of those 10  apparently died before Elizabeth’s death.)

1892 Aug: "SAMUEL married again.  Gave all land to this wife for caring
for him the rest of his life."  (FOURTH  wife  was Elizabeth Laurence.)

Samuel and Elizabeth deeded as a public cemetery a one-acre parcel of land, measuring 660 feet by 66 feet, and located in the northeast corner of their homestead, reserving the south quarter of that land for the burial of any descendant of Samuel.   Elizabeth was buried there and later so was Samuel.

Letters from Helen Kracht, 506 Walnut St. Marysville, KS 66508-1952.

ph 1 (913) 562-2933.   13 Sep 1991 -1992: "I'm supposing your great grandfather and mine are brothers.  My great grandfather was Samuel Strange with brothers Martin, John, Calvin, Paul, Joseph, Ben and Rolland."

Carol's letter to Helen:  Did your father tell you where Samuel and
Elizabeth were buried?  Is anybody else buried there?  Is there a written
listing of his (or their) burials?

"Old SAMUEL and wife ELIZABETH are buried about 7 miles south of here
on the farm (family cemetery plot) in the section 12  mentioned in
Charles Strange Biography  (Blue Rapids City Township.)    Samuel's place was located on the Blue Rapids City & Wells Twp lines about east of the #72 on your map."

"I go out to the old cemetery often.  .  . It only has 5 cedar trees marking
Old Samuel & Elizabeth's graves.  Also there is my grandmother, Abigail
Wilson Strange, and 3 of her children, Samuel, Walter and Laura Isabella.
The children all died as toddlers.  I know Laura was 1 1/2 yrs old in
1900.  Evidently the boys were gone by this time.  My father was born in
Dec of 1900 or 1901.  His mother, Abigail, died when he was 13 months
old.    Anyway there's an acre and these graves are at the south end on a
hill.  I understand there are others in the acre, but I don't know who.

Buelah Winter, the granddaughter of Rachel Walls Marshall, who was the
granddaughter of William Frank Walls, says she remembers a funeral
there."

Helen also wrote:  "My g-grandfather SAMUEL (Strange) was 72 when my
grandfather, Howard, was born in 1874.”

Carol, it is interesting to me to find Elizabeth Dalton was said to have had a baby boy born dead.  In what year it doesn't say but she buried him with a

board marker saying "My Tim."  This information came to me from a woman, named Kate Miller,  living in Norton, Kansas in 1978.  She said she knew the story of this,  but the child was never recorded as it was Blue when it was born.  I asked her if it had taken a breath and she said it couldn't---she was told it had a bad heart.   ( Shirley E. Sep 11, 2002)

1850 Jul: "Samuel's first wife was named Edy; it would seem that she died a little after they came here [VA].  There are other children shown in this census living in other homes after the death of their mother.  He [Samuel] was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Strange, and apparently came here from Granville Co, NC.  He lived in Pine Creek at this time but acquired land on Crooked Creek,  ['300 acres near east branch of Crooked Creek' -Marty Strange]  lost it, and left here in 1860.  He remarried Elizabeth Dalton in  1855." (Annotated census prepared from 1850 census by  John Perry Alderman, Carroll Co. Historian.)

1850: Samuel Strange born s/o Samuel and Jane Strange.  Place: Likely Carroll Co, VA.
1852 abt:  Samuel Strange's  #2 wife,  Jane (Traylor) Strange either died or left him.
1854:  Julia Ann  md in Carroll Co, VA

1855 Jun:  "Samuel md  #3 Elizabeth Chaney Dalton in June when Elizabeth would have been 25 years of age and Samuel would have been 53."  (H. Kracht)

Elizabeth born in Carroll Co., VA.   Her census years list conflicting ages as follows:  She was 30 in  1860, 30 in 1865,  32 in 1870,  47 in 1875, 48 in 1880 and 52 in 1885.  (Actually born  Jun 10, 1830).

Rachel is age 11 in 1860 and listed as "Rachel Dalton 13"  in the 1865 census.  She  is probably d/o Elizabeth's first mg to a Dalton.  (Born 1849-1852)

1855 abt:  A PICTURE (xerox) probably a mg picture of SAMUEL STRANGE and ELIZABETH CHENEY STRANGE sent by Helen Kracht, Oct 18, 1991.  Helen says that Elizabeth Cheney was his third wife. They look stern and glassy eyed.  She has very black hair and looks heavy.   If marriage picture, she is 25, and he is 53.

1857: "SAMUEL STRANGE FAMILY MOVED FROM CARROLL CO, VIRGINIA to  DONIPHAN CO, KANSAS."  (Probably Wathena, Washington Twp.)
Charles Strange Biography in Portrait and Biog Album of Marshall Co, KS, 1889,  p 671.

1857:  "Their property at Crooked Creek (probably Doniphan Co, KS) was located in mountainous terrain, difficult to develop. . .They lived on the Crooked Creek farm until about 1857 when debts overtook them. . .
They lived in Doniphan Co,(KS) but left when the meandering Missouri threatened to undermine the bank beneath their home.  There is some mention of a Shawnee Co. (Topeka) location in some KS records, but by 1869 they were on the Marshall Co. homestead."     (Marty Strange)

Need to check probate records for 1857-1869 of Doniphan Co.

1860:  "Foreclosure on the Crooked Creek  (probably Doniphan Co, KS) property formally occurred." (Marty Strange)

1875:  "Then the 1875 and 1880 (census) records include HOWARD STRANGE, my
grandfather.  He was born in 1874.  He was last and Samuel disinherited
him because he was displeased with his marriage." (Helen K.)

1875 Dec 1:  "When he was 67 years old, Samuel obtained a patent under the Homestead Act for an 80 acre farm near Blue Rapids City, Marshall Co, KS.  At that time he had been md to his 3rd wife, Elizabeth, for 14 years and they lived with 8 children between ages one and twenty years.  Six of the children belonged to both of them, but Rachel (was from Elizabeth's first marriage)and Samuel was Elizabeth's stepson."  (J. Mayer, Minson)

"Two of Samuel's sons, Charles 24 and William 22, homesteaded 80 acre parcels adjacent to Samuel and Elizabeth, and a John C. strange who (was a brother of Roland), farmed another 80 acres in the same half-section. In addition, Roland Strange also shows up on Marshall Co. land records. They all succeeded in getting patents-William on the same day as his father-- 12/1/75, Charles a month later-1/10/76, and John C. on 6/20/81. (Marty Strange)

1880 Mar 11: 78th Birthday announcement of "Sammy Strange: "Uncle Sammy Strange celebrated his 78th birthday some days ago.  His children and immediate descendants present numbered 40.  We understand that there are about 15 or 20 in the state of VA who could not be present."
(Blue Rapids News.  "I found it when I visited the Blue Rapids library during my trip to Kansas.  They had many references to the various Stranges in those newspapers,
Henry's large family as well as Samuel's own children who were adults when he left VA would account for the 15 or 20 quite easily."  Sharon Capezza.)

My mother has told me some stories and her older brother Cecil told me one
or two before he died. This is one.
(1884-1885*)   "Almost all the kids were gone.   Howard (Strange) was about the only one left. They had an old grey horse name Cleves and a red dog called PattySue.
The dog and the horse were partial to one another and when the horse went out to pasture
the dog followed.
"Samuel would always get up from the table and scrape out  his plate for the dog then go do his night chores. One night in the dead of winter there was ice on the ground and the
fires in the house were built high to keep out the winter chill.   Sam went in
to feed extra to the milk cow and the team of horses. A bob cat had gone
into the barn to get out of the cold and was snarling in a manger. The horse
was outside and the dog came in with Samuel. The cat spooked and
jumped at Samuel in order to escape.  Tthe dog took the cat and the horse came in
through the barn rearing and kicking at the bob cat.  It  wasn't long before
the cat lay dead and the horse went  back to eating his hay and the dog
went on the porch to get his biscuits and gravy leaving Samuel standing in
the barn wondering what had happened. That night the dog slept in the house
by the fire."
*(It probably 1884-1885 because-Howard's last sister md in 1884 & Samuel is in Marysville in  1885.  c.m) (Shirley E. Sep 14, 2002.)

1891 Dec 6: Death of Elizabeth Cheney Dalton Strange.  Obit:
"Died at her residence in Marysville (KS), Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Strange, aged 61 years.  Mrs. Strange's maiden name was Dalton.  She was born in Carroll Co, VA, Jun 10, 1830 and was md to Mr. Strange in Jun 1855.  In 1857, Mr. and Mrs. Strange moved to KS and to Marshall Co in 1870 taking a homestead in the NE part of the Blue Rapids City twp.  Of late years they have resided in Marysville, where after a sickness lasting through the past summer, (she) passed away. . .She leaves a husband, six children and six step-children." Buried in Blue Rapids Twp on the old homestead.

1892 Aug 18:  SAMUEL married again.  Gave all land to this wife for caring
for him the rest of his life.

"Samuel Strange, 90 yr old citizen of Marysville, was md to  Elizabeth Laurence, a blushing widow of 48 summers.  Each of the contracting parties have had three previous partners of joy and sorrow."
           Blue Rapids Times-- reprint 1992.

1895: Census of Marysville.  (C.M has an 1895 of Blue Rapids.  Marysville likely to have an 1895 also.  How can we get it?)  To Do.

1895 Dec 21:  ---Samuel died three years later, at 93 years of age in Blue Rapids, KS.  His will was proved in Doniphan Co, KS in 1895.

TO DO:  Is there an obituary in the Blue Rapids or Marysville, newspaper?

1895:  "Old SAMUEL and wife ELIZABETH are buried about 7 miles
south of here on the farm (family cemetery plot). . . 3 mi E of Hiway 77, three mi N of Blue Rapids. . . in the section 12  mentioned in the Charles Strange Biography  (Blue Rapids City Township.)  My husband and I were out there a couple of weeks ago.  It has no stones, just some cedar trees.  We are trying to get this acre on the tax rolls. I would love to be buried there."

"Samuel's place was located on the Blue Rapids City & Wells Twp lines
about east of the #72 on your map."  .   (The graves are at the crest of a small rise . . .commanding a good view of Samuel's entire homestead and the homesteads of Charles Henry and John.)

I know Laura was 1 1/2 yrs old in 1900.  Evidently the boys were gone by this time.  My father [Alfred Strange] was born in Dec of 1900 or 1901.  His mother, Abigail, died when he was 13 months old.    Anyway there's an acre and these graves are at the south end on a hill.  I understand there are others in the acre, but I don't know who.  Buelah Winter, the granddaughter of Rachel Walls Marshall, who was the granddaughter of William Frank Walls, says she remembers a funeral there."  Helen Kracht
--------
"Attached are the two pictures of the homestead in Kansas and the gravesite where Samuel and Elizabeth Dalton are buried.  You'll note that the gravesite is pretty much some old cedar trees and lilac bushes.  A cedar was planted for each of the adults buried there and a lilac was planted on the graves of each of the children.  Since the cemetery sits on the current farmer's lands, no one takes care of it, so it's pretty overgrown.  In fact, the current owner is planting on part of the land that was supposedly set aside as the cemetery.  Since I was there in spring, the planting hadn't yet begun, but the fields had been burned, either from a wildfire or by the farmer."  Sharon Capezza letter of Aug 10, 2002.
