1850 Jul: "Samuel's first wife was named Edy; it would seem that she died a little after they came here [VA]. There are other children shown in this census living in other homes after the death of their mother. He [Samuel] was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Strange, and apparently came here from Granville Co, NC. He lived in Pine Creek at this time but acquired land on Crooked Creek, ['300 acres near east branch of Crooked Creek' -Marty Strange] lost it, and left here in 1860. He remarried Elizabeth Dalton in 1855." (Annotated census prepared from 1850 census by John Perry Alderman, Carroll Co. Historian.)

They lived in Doniphan Co,(KS) but left when the meandering Missouri threatened to undermine the bank beneath their home. There is some mention of a Shawnee Co. (Topeka) location in some KS records, but by 1869 they were on the Marshall Co. homestead." (Marty Strange)

1875 Dec 1: "When he was 67 years old, Samuel obtained a patent under the Homestead Act for an 80 acre farm near Blue Rapids City, Marshall Co, KS. At that time he had been md to his 3rd wife, Elizabeth, for 14 years and they lived with 8 children between ages one and twenty years. Six of the children belonged to both of them, but Rachel (was from Elizabeth's first marriage)and Samuel was Elizabeth's stepson." (J. Mayer, Minson)
"Two of Samuel's sons, Charles 24 and William 22, homesteaded 80 acre parcels adjacent to Samuel and Elizabeth, and a John C. strange who (was a brother of Roland), farmed another 80 acres in the same half-section. In addition, Roland Strange also shows up on Marshall Co. land records. They all succeeded in getting patents-William on the same day as his father-- 12/1/75, Charles a month later-1/10/76, and John C. on 6/20/81. (Marty Strange)

(Blue Rapids News. "I found it when I visited the Blue Rapids library during my trip to Kansas. They had many references to the various Stranges in those newspapers,
Henry's large family as well as Samuel's own children who were adults when he left VA would account for the 15 or 20 quite easily." Sharon Capezza.)

My mother has told me some stories and her older brother Cecil told me one
or two before he died. This is one.
(1884-1885*) "Almost all the kids were gone. Howard (Strange) was about the only one left. They had an old grey horse name Cleves and a red dog called PattySue.
The dog and the horse were partial to one another and when the horse went out to pasture
the dog followed.
"Samuel would always get up from the table and scrape out his plate for the dog then go do his night chores. One night in the dead of winter there was ice on the ground and the
fires in the house were built high to keep out the winter chill. Sam went in
to feed extra to the milk cow and the team of horses. A bob cat had gone
into the barn to get out of the cold and was snarling in a manger. The horse
was outside and the dog came in with Samuel. The cat spooked and
jumped at Samuel in order to escape. Tthe dog took the cat and the horse came in
through the barn rearing and kicking at the bob cat. It wasn't long before
the cat lay dead and the horse went back to eating his hay and the dog
went on the porch to get his biscuits and gravy leaving Samuel standing in
the barn wondering what had happened. That night the dog slept in the house
by the fire."
*(It probably 1884-1885 because-Howard's last sister md in 1884 & Samuel is in Marysville in 1885. c.m) (Shirley E. Sep 14, 2002.)
1891 Dec 6: Death of Elizabeth Cheney Dalton Strange. Obit:
"Died at her residence in Marysville (KS), Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Strange, aged 61 years. Mrs. Strange's maiden name was Dalton. She was born in Carroll Co, VA, Jun 10, 1830 and was md to Mr. Strange in Jun 1855. In 1857, Mr. and Mrs. Strange moved to KS and to Marshall Co in 1870 taking a homestead in the NE part of the Blue Rapids City twp. Of late years they have resided in Marysville, where after a sickness lasting through the past summer, (she) passed away. . .She leaves a husband, six children and six step-children." Buried in Blue Rapids Twp on the old homestead.
Samuel and Elizabeth deeded as a public cemetery a one-acre parcel of land, measuring 660 feet by 66 feet, and located in the northeast corner of their homestead, reserving the south quarter of that land for the burial of any descendant of Samuel. Elizabeth was buried there and later so was Samuel.
1892 Aug 18: SAMUEL married again. Gave all land to this wife for caring
for him the rest of his life.
"Samuel Strange, 90 yr old citizen of Marysville, was md to Elizabeth Laurence, a blushing widow of 48 summers. Each of the contracting parties have had three previous partners of joy and sorrow."
Blue Rapids Times-- reprint 1992.
1895: Census of Marysville. (C.M has an 1895 of Blue Rapids. Marysville likely to have an 1895 also. How can we get it?) To Do.
1895 Dec 21: ---Samuel died three years later, at 93 years of age in Blue Rapids, KS. His will was proved in Doniphan Co, KS in 1895.
TO DO: Is there an obituary in the Blue Rapids or Marysville, newspaper?
1895: "Old SAMUEL and wife ELIZABETH are buried about 7 miles
south of here on the farm (family cemetery plot). . . 3 mi E of Hiway 77, three mi N of Blue Rapids. . . in the section 12 mentioned in the Charles Strange Biography (Blue Rapids City Township.) My husband and I were out there a couple of weeks ago. It has no stones, just some cedar trees. We are trying to get this acre on the tax rolls. I would love to be buried there."
"Samuel's place was located on the Blue Rapids City & Wells Twp lines
about east of the #72 on your map." . (The graves are at the crest of a small rise . . .commanding a good view of Samuel's entire homestead and the homesteads of Charles Henry and John.)
"I go out to the old cemetery often. . . It only has 5 cedar trees marking
Old Samuel & Elizabeth's graves. Also there is my grandmother, Abigail
Wilson Strange, and 3 of her children, Samuel, Walter and Laura Isabella. The children all died as toddlers. I know Laura was 1 1/2 yrs old in 1900. Evidently the boys were gone by this time. My father [Alfred Strange] was born in Dec of 1900 or 1901. His mother, Abigail, died when he was 13 months old. Anyway there's an acre and these graves are at the south end on a hill. I understand there are others in the acre, but I don't know who. Buelah Winter, the granddaughter of Rachel Walls Marshall, who was the granddaughter of William Frank Walls, says she remembers a funeral there." Helen Kracht
--------
"Attached are the two pictures of the homestead in Kansas and the gravesite where Samuel and Elizabeth Dalton are buried. You'll note that the gravesite is pretty much some old cedar trees and lilac bushes. A cedar was planted for each of the adults buried there and a lilac was planted on the graves of each of the children. Since the cemetery sits on the current farmer's lands, no one takes care of it, so it's pretty overgrown. In fact, the current owner is planting on part of the land that was supposedly set aside as the cemetery. Since I was there in spring, the planting hadn't yet begun, but the fields had been burned, either from a wildfire or by the farmer." Sharon Capezza letter of Aug 10, 2002.
