1894: Shortly after his father's death, Paul and his family moved to Hoosick Falls, New York and eventually settled in North Adams, Massachusetts. I think that was because Mary's mother was living there before she died and there were apparently relatives in the area. letter below.
Hi Carol!
I'm glad you contacted me. Yes, I am working on family history as well and I have compiled quite a bit of information from my recent trip to Kansas when I visited with Helen.
I am descended from Paul, and my information agrees with yours...that is that he was born in Doniphan County in 1861. As to the 1880 census, Paul was living in Marysville, not in his father's household. He was a hired hand on another farmer's land. He married on 1/2/1883 to Mary Fidelia Whitney (sometimes confused with her mother, Mary Ann Clark Whitney). Paul was named after an older brother, Paul Howard, who died in 1860. There is some speculation that he and his father did not get along well, hence his hiring himself out to another farm when I'm sure Samuel could have used his help. Also, when Samuel married for the last time, his pre-nuptual agreement cut Paul (and everyone else) out of any hope of inheriting the farm. Shortly after his father's death, Paul and his family moved to Hoosick Falls, New York and eventually settled in North Adams, Massachusetts. I think that was because Mary's mother was living there before she died and there were apparently relatives in the area. Paul's children then dispersed, with Earl, Grace and Dora staying in the North Adams area (Grace married a man named Franklin Forbush), Clarence moved to New Hampshire, Leroy moved to Hinsdale, Mass., Agnes to Bennington, VT, Paul to Holyoke, Mass., and Florence to Amherst, Mass.
I have been trying to get all the information I received from Helen and from the historical society in Marysville into my copy of Family Tree maker. If you have that software, I can send you a copy of my file to incorporate into yours. If there are differences in the information, we can then try to sort out your information versus mine. I would love a copy of whatever you have as well.
Linda Kielbowicz, another cousin descended from Paul was also working on this. I tried to contact her based on the email address Helen had given me, but it is no longer an active account. Since she lives not far from here, I'm going to try to find a phone number for her and give her a call. It's great to know that there are other members of the family interested in keeping a history going. I look forward to our continued correspondence. Maybe someday we'll actually get to meet each other!
