 letter below.

Hi Carol!

I'm glad you contacted me.  Yes, I am working on family history as well and I have compiled quite a bit of information from my recent trip to Kansas when I visited with Helen.

I am descended from Paul, and my information agrees with yours...that is that he was born in Doniphan County in 1861. As to the 1880 census, Paul was living in Marysville, not in his father's household.  He was a hired hand on another farmer's land.  He married on 1/2/1883 to Mary Fidelia Whitney (sometimes confused with her mother, Mary Ann Clark Whitney). Paul was named after an older brother, Paul Howard, who died in 1860. There is some speculation that he and his father did not get along well, hence his hiring himself out to another farm when I'm sure Samuel could have used his help.  Also, when Samuel married for the last time, his pre-nuptual agreement cut Paul (and everyone else) out of any hope of inheriting the farm.  Shortly after his father's death, Paul and his family moved to Hoosick Falls, New York and eventually settled in North Adams, Massachusetts.  I think that was because Mary's mother was living there before she died and there were apparently relatives in the area. Paul's children then dispersed, with Earl, Grace and Dora staying in the North Adams area (Grace married a man named Franklin Forbush), Clarence moved to New Hampshire, Leroy moved to Hinsdale, Mass., Agnes to Bennington, VT, Paul to Holyoke, Mass., and Florence to Amherst, Mass.

I have been trying to get all the information I received from Helen and from the historical society in Marysville into my copy of Family Tree maker.  If you have that software, I can send you a copy of my file to incorporate into yours.  If there are differences in the information, we can then try to sort out your information versus mine.  I would love a copy of whatever you have as well.

Linda Kielbowicz, another cousin descended from Paul was also working on this.  I tried to contact her based on the email address Helen had given me, but it is no longer an active account.  Since she lives not far from here, I'm going to try to find a phone number for her and give her a call.  It's great to know that there are other members of the family interested in keeping a history going.  I look forward to our continued correspondence.  Maybe someday we'll actually get to meet each other!

My mother has told me some stories and her older brother Cecil told me one
or two before he died. This is one.
(1884-1885*)   "Almost all the kids were gone.   Howard (Strange) was about the only one left. They had an old grey horse name Cleves and a red dog called PattySue.
The dog and the horse were partial to one another and when the horse went out to pasture
the dog followed.
"Samuel would always get up from the table and scrape out  his plate for the dog then go do his night chores. One night in the dead of winter there was ice on the ground and the
fires in the house were built high to keep out the winter chill.   Sam went in
to feed extra to the milk cow and the team of horses. A bob cat had gone
into the barn to get out of the cold and was snarling in a manger. The horse
was outside and the dog came in with Samuel. The cat spooked and
jumped at Samuel in order to escape.  Tthe dog took the cat and the horse came in
through the barn rearing and kicking at the bob cat.  It  wasn't long before
the cat lay dead and the horse went  back to eating his hay and the dog
went on the porch to get his biscuits and gravy leaving Samuel standing in
the barn wondering what had happened. That night the dog slept in the house
by the fire."
*(It would be 1884-1893 because-Howard's last sister md in 1884 and Howard md  abt 1893.  But it also probably happened before Samuel moved into Marysville. He's in Marysville in 1885.  So I'd guess 1884-1885. cm)   (Shirley E. Sep 14, 2002.)

"Mrs. Addie Strange of Kendall, (Whatcom Co.)WA. furnished this brief sketch of her husband, Samuel Adams Strange's,  family:
"Samuel Adams and brothers Charlie and Will of Blue Rapids, KS were sons of Samuel Strange of Halifax Co, VA.  Samuel had seven brothers, (1) MARTIN,  (2) JOHN C.,    (3) PAUL,  (4) JOSEPH,  (5) CALVIN and (6) ROLLAND.  Their FATHER WAS HENRY STRANGE, he lived in Campbell Co, VA, not far from Lynchburg.  Henry Strange's father is reported to have come from Scotland and to have been related to Sir Robert Strange, the Artist of London.  Martin is said to live in Alabama,  John was killed in the rebellion, Paul died in Missouri, Joseph died in California, Rolland lived in Kansas.  (7) BEN lives in Colorado and Calvin is thought to be dead.  A nephew of Samuel Adams named Samuel T. lives in Montana.  Samuel Adams has two children W. L. and Charles A.  Both live in Tacoma, Wash."   (Iva Campbell, d/o Francis Marion Strange.)

1851 Jul 14:  Samuel Adams Strange born.  (Source Sharon Capezza and. Janet Stone of Ballsbridge, Dublin Ireland)

"Samuel Strange b.1849 or July 1850 in Halifax Co or Carroll Co, VA.
He moved with his parents first to Kentucky and then to Blue Rapids, Marshall County KS, and relocated to Kendall,  and then Nooksack, Whatcom, WA."  (Excerpts from STRANGE OF HOWARD pg 210  by John Mayer)

The birthdate of 1849 would not be consistent with the 1850 Carroll VA census, because Samuel Adams is not listed with his father in that census.   However the 1860 Washington twp, Doniphan,KS census where he is listed as age 11 does fit an 1849 birth. (Dave Minson)

Janet Stone of Ballsbridge,Dublin Ireland is listed as a source for Samuel Adams Strange in the Ancestral File.  She lists his father as William Strange. She shows him  b. 29 Jul 1851, Bigelow KS, died 22 Sep 1925 Kelso WA, Married to Sarah Trosper b. 16 Oct 1859 Bigelow, KS died 9 Jun 1943, Thurston WA.  Son Charles Surat Strange b. 10 Sep 1885 Marshall KS.

Adella was born Nov 1874 in Texas. She married Samuel Adams STRANGE Jr. about 1900 in Blue Rapids, Marshall Co, KS.

1881 Jan 3:  Samuel Strange Jr 29 md Sarah M. Trosper 21, Marysville, Marshall Co.
(Sharon C saw the doc in Marshall County on his mg to Sarah Trosper, but not the ones on his marriage to Adella.)

abt 1962:  Iva G Strange Campbell wrote:

There is a marriage record for Samuel Strange Jr age 29 m/ Sarah M. Trosper age 21 on 1 Jan 1881, Marshall Co, KS.  Need to verify if same individual.
This very well could be Samuel Adams Strange.
Iva Campbell notes " Samuel Adams Strange -- Mrs. Addie Strange of Kendall Washington furnished me with thies brief sketch of her husband's family.
"Samuel Adams and Brothers Charlie and Will of Blue Rapids, Kansas were sons of Samuel Strange of Halifax County VA.....Samuel Adams has two children W.L. and Charles A.  Both live in Tokoma, Washington"

In 1900 Census S. A. Strange is listed as a turnkey (guard) in Washington State prison, Walla Walla Washington. Shows him as married 0 yrs.  In the same Census Adella Strange is listed in Kendall, Whatcom, WA  vol 20 ed 238 sh 3 line 93. She is listed as head of family with William S. and Charles S Strange (stepsons) and from birthdates this is shown to be correct family.
She is 25 yrs old ,b. Nov 1874 TX. married 1 yr 0 children.

Also 1900 WA census, Turnwater pct, Thurston Co. Vol 8 ed 223 sheet 9 line 18 is Sarah Strange (b. Oct 1859 KS) living alone, divorced, 2 children, 2 living. This strongly suggests that Sarah Trosper Strange md Samuel Adams Strange, had two sons William and Charles, moved to Washington divorced and  there Samuel md Addie or Adella.

Although Rachael is always claimed by the family as a full sister, her
name appears in the 1865 Census of the Samuel Strange family as "Rachael Dalton."
Since she was born in 1853 before Elizabeth married Samuel in 1855, it is likely that she
is their child of a previous relationship.  This seems most likely.
Another possibility:  There is a1 yr old Rachel Dalton in 1850  in a James Dalton family.  They are in Carroll Co, VA, just a page away from the Lewis Dalton Family in 1850.  (Lewis is the father of 20 year old Elizabeth Dalton, who md Samuel in  1855.)
