article entitled" MADISONIA, Reviewing our Heritage" by Ted Sloat:
"JE HOUGLAND occasionally wrote a letter of reminiscenses to Dr. A.C.
Roberts, publisher and editor of the Evening Democrat, who never failed
to publish them in his paper. Here is one."
"FATHER (meaning ELZA HOUGLAND) was a carpenter and built many of
the first buildings in Fort Madison.  On Sundays he drove in a horse and
buggy out to Skyles, Kents and other country schoolhouses and preached.
He held the first Methodist meetings in Fort Madison at our house. Mother
(Sarah Adair Hougland) raised chickens and fed the preachers, and I was
chief catcher.  ... (more very interesting history!)
1858: Father(ELZA) was disabled and died .  My mother and sister, Delia,
did sewing and millinery work to earn us a living.  ... I caught fish in the
river and hunted to help out.   Then came the Civil War.  (He joined when
he was 17-18.)

1825 BIRTH of Joseph Hague:   calculated from 1860 census of, Guernsey, Ohio: Joseph, 35 years old."

CENSUS:   1830, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills Twp. p 424:
"JOHN Hage, 1 m 20-30, 1 m 5-10 (Joseph?); 1 f 20-30,   1 m 70-80." (Hannah's father, James Foreacres?)

CENSUS:  1840, Ohio, Guernsey, Millwood  Twp. p 331.
"JOHN Hague 40-50, 1 f 40-50;  (Hannah [Foreacre]Hague
(6 children)
l m under 5,
2 m 5-10,
1 m 15-20;   (Joseph?)
1 f 10-15,
1 f 15-20"  (Emiline?)
This census seems consistent with 1830 census listed above.
(There is a Charles McQuade family  10 families away.)

1840, Ohio, Guernsey, Wills  Twp. p 313.
"JOHN (could be JEHU) Hage 30-40, l f 30-40.
(4 children) l m 15-20,   (Joseph?)
2 f  10-15,
1 f  15-20."  (Emiline?)
(John and James Foraker are listed 12 families away.)

1840, Ohio, Guernsey, Richland Twp. p 412.
" JEHU Hague 30-40, l f 30-40.
(4 children) l m 15-20,   (Joseph?)
2 f  10-15,
1 f  15-20."  (Emiline?)
The above RICHLAND TWP "Hague" IS A REPEAT OF THE  WILLS TWP "Hague"  in
the number and ages of children!
I see no similarity to the Hague "neighbors" in Richland and Wills Twp.
However there is a DAVID WOLFORD in  Millwood Twp who is also listed
in Richland Twp.  (He is listed with 2 less children in the latter.)

It appears that JEHU HAGUE lived in a corner of a township and was
visited by three census takers in the year 1840.  However, the question
remains whether there were 4 or 6 children in Jehu's family?
Another real possibility is that Jehu lived with another woman, besides
Hannah.

MARRIAGE: IGI shows "Joseph md Rachel Ann Canary 16 Sep 1847, Guernsey Co, Ohio."

DEATH-FATHER-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-BIOGRAPHY:  Joan Van Scoyoc letter
of Oct 8, 1983 in poss of Carol Minson: "The story goes that the Hagues
and others had joined a wagon train going to Oregon.  They got as far as
north MO where they were hit by a plague. . apparently Joseph and Rachel
died.  Louis was taken by my gr grandfather Hays--it is said that he was
9 years old, so this would have been in 1864.  An older brother, George,
was to have gone on to Oregon with the wagons, and the two younger
brothers, that would be Evil and Francis, went back to Ohio.  No mention
was made of the girls."
