He was a grandson of Lambert McCombs, the first white settler in Clay Twp, while his mother, Mrs. Eva Cripe McCombs, was the granddau of Peter Roof, the only soldier of the Rev War to be buried in South Bend City Cem.  Four sons and daus survive Mr. McComb:

"South Bend, Indiana- paper:"
1887:
"Mr.John McCombs, a well know carpenter in this city and a former member of the 21st IN Battery has rec'd word of the death of his grandmother, Mrs. Hannah McCombs of Napa City, CA on the 19th. (Jan 1887).  She was . . .in her 100th year at the time of her death.  Her birthplace was in Chester Co,PA where the battle of Brandywine was fought ten years previous to her birth.  She was md to Lambert McCombs and she and her husband with their family came to the vicinity of South Bend July 5, 1829.  Mr. McCombs helped to organize the county and was the first Justice of Peace of German Twp which in that early day included what is now known as Clay Twp.

The McCombs lived here until 1846 when he sold what is now known as the Thomas Calvert farm to the late S. L. Gottrel and moved to CA, the whole family going except William who settled in Clay Twp and lived there until his death.  Lambert McCombs and wife became pioneers in CA, as they had been in St. Joseph County, and he died there in 1849.  His widow remained near Napa City and lived to see her fourth generation.  Four of her sons and three of her daughters survive her, all living in CA except one son, who is a resident of British Columbia.  She was living in this vicinity beside her grandson, JOHN, one named after her husband, at LaPaz and several other grandchildren in this county."

John McCombs was the son of the late Mr and Mrs. William McCombs, who came to IN with the pioneer settlers.  He was b  Oct 5 1841 in this county and has always made his home here, being educated. .  at Notre Dame U.  After being a student at the latter institution for a year, he enlisted for service in the Civil War and was assigned to the 21st IN Battery which was connected with the Army of the Cumberland under General Thomas and Rosecrans.  He served to the close of the war when he was mustered out at Indianapolis, June 26, 1865."
"Returning to So Bend he resumed his studies at Notre Dame. A year later he became a teacher then taught in IA and MO.  In 1868 he became a carpenter  . .in Texas and KS.. . Later he became associated with the IN Lumber and Mfg Co as its VP."

"William Hildebrand was the s/o Henry Hildebrand, b aug 26, 1796 and Hannah Shively Hildebrand born March 6 1803, and grandson of Henry and Mary Hildebrande.

Maria MCCOMBS [Parents] was born 17 Dec 1844 in Clay Twp, St Joseph Co, IN. She died 13 Jan 1903 in Nr Teegarden, Marshall Co, IN and was buried in Fair Cemetery, St. Joseph Co, In.. Maria married William HILDEBRAND on 10 Oct 1867.

p. 22Obit of MARIA (McCombs) HILDEBRAND WHO DIED 13 JAN 1903:
Maria, w/o William Hildebrand living 1&1/2 miles east of Teegarden, IN--Typhoid pneumonia--Mrs. Hildebrand survived by her husband,and
3 children: (& 4 gchildren)
Mrs. Ira Clark living 1/2 mi north of LaPaz;
Cyrus Hildebrand, living one mi west of LaPaz; and
John who still lives at home.
Mrs. Hildebrand joined the German Baptist Church in 1864.

Mrs. Hildebrand was b Dec 17 1844 nr South Bend, IN.  Her parents were Wm and Eva McCombs.  She had four brothers and four sisters.  Her eldest brother having preceded her about two years ago at the age of 60.  The remainder of her brothers and sisters are living.  They are:
Lambert McCombs of Plymouth,
Samuel J. (McCombs) of Granger, IN,
Wm F. (McCombs) of South Bend,
Mrs. Elizabeth H .Heath,and the
Misses Eva  (McCombs), Hannah L  (McCombs) and Amanda  (McCombs) of South Bend, IN.
The funeral took place Friday at the east Church in Liberty Twp, St. Joseph County.  She was interred in the Fair Cemetery by the side of her son (Elmer) who died a number of years ago.
