75 years old, one of pioneers of St. Joseph Co, died at the home of his son, Raymond McCombs of Teegarden, Marshall Co, IN.Lambert confined to bed for past year-dropsy.  He was born in Clay Twp, St. Joseph Co, in the year 1843 and and a resident of the vicinity until he moved to the home of his son a year ago.

He was a grandson of Lambert McCombs, the first white settler in Clay Twp, while his mother, Mrs. Eva Cripe McCombs, was the granddau of Peter Roof, the only soldier of the Rev War to be buried in South Bend City Cem.  Four sons and daus survive Mr. McComb:

p.11:  "Hannah. . .md Lambert McComb (12 Jan 1811- Uniontown, Fayette, PA). . .came to Wayne Co, OH abt 1812. . then in 1829 moved to St. Joseph Co, IN. . .left there in fall of 1847 and spent winter at Independence, MO where they laid in their supply for the overland journey in the spring.. . .crossing the plains settled near San Francisco, CA.  Napa City was her home where
20 Jan 1888, she died..nearly 100 years old."
p.70:  They (Lambert and Hannah) "left west of the Missouri May 1st 1848. arrived in Napa Valley on Sep 5 1848 without accident or interruption of any kind."

He attended the schools of South Bend and Notre Dame.  He was md to Caroline Johnson of this city July 1866 one year following his service in the Civil War during which he was a member of the 21 Indiana Battery.
He was a grandson of Lambert McCombs, the first white settler in Clay Twp, while his mother, Mrs. Eva Cripe McCombs, was the granddau of Peter Roof, the only soldier of the Rev War to be buried in South Bend City Cem.

Four sons and daus survive Mr. mcComb:  Raymond McCombs of Teegarden with whom he made his home; Frank B. McCombs, 115 East Donald St, this city; Mrs. Harry Reel and Mrs. Alma Inks, both of Los Angeles, CA.

He is also survived by 5 brothers and sisters:  W. F. McCombs of South Bend;
Samuel J. McCombs of Bertrand, MI;
Mrs. Elizabeth W. Heath,
Misses Eva E, Hannah L and Amanda McCombs, all of South Bend.

Services in First Brethern Church, at Teegarden and burial in the City Cemetery.

If you look at the birthdates of her siblings it  appears the latter is a mistake.

(Jan 1887).  She was . . .in her 100th year at the time of her death.  Her birthplace was in Chester Co,PA where the battle of Brandywine was fought ten years previous to her birth.  She was md to Lambert McCombs and she and her husband with their family came to the vicinity of South Bend July 5, 1829.  Mr. McCombs helped to organize the county and was the first Justice of Peace of German Twp which in that early day included what is now known as Clay Twp.

The McCombs lived here until 1846 when he sold what is now known as the Thomas Calvert farm to the late S. L. Gottrel and moved to CA, the whole family going except William who settled in Clay Twp and lived there until his death.  Lambert McCombs and wife became pioneers in CA, as they had been in St. Joseph County, and he died there in 1849.  His widow remained near Napa City and lived to see her fourth generation.  Four of her sons and three of her daughters survive her, all living in CA except one son, who is a resident of British Columbia.  She was living in this vicinity beside her grandson, JOHN, one named after her husband, at LaPaz and several other grandchildren in this county."

John McCombs was the son of the late Mr and Mrs. William McCombs, who came to IN with the pioneer settlers.  He was b  Oct 5 1841 in this county and has always made his home here, being educated. .  at Notre Dame U.  After being a student at the latter institution for a year, he enlisted for service in the Civil War and was assigned to the 21st IN Battery which was connected with the Army of the Cumberland under General Thomas and Rosecrans.  He served to the close of the war when he was mustered out at Indianapolis, June 26, 1865."
"Returning to So Bend he resumed his studies at Notre Dame. A year later he became a teacher then taught in IA and MO.  In 1868 he became a carpenter  . .in Texas and KS.. . Later he became associated with the IN Lumber and Mfg Co as its VP."

75 years old, one of pioneers of St. Joseph Co, died at the home of his son, Raymond McCombs of Teegarden, Marshall Co, IN.Lambert confined to bed for past year-dropsy.  He was born in Clay Twp, St. Joseph Co, in the year 1843 and and a resident of the vicinity until he moved to the home of his son a year ago.
He attended the schools of South Bend and Notre Dame.  He was md to Caroline Johnson of this city July 1866 one year following his service in the Civil War during which he was a member of the 21 Indiana Battery.
He was a grandson of Llambert mcCombs, the first white settler in Clay Twp, while his mother, Mrs. Eva Cripe McCombs, was the granddau of Peter Roof, the only soldier of the Rev War to be buried in South Bend City Cem.

Four sons and daus survive Mr. mcComb:  Raymond McCombs of Teegarden with whom he made his home; Frank B. McCombs, 115 East Donald St, this city; Mrs. Harry Reel and Mrs. Alma Inks, both of Los Angeles, CA.

He is also survived by 5 brothers and sisters:  W. F. McCombs of South Bend;
Samuel J. McCombs of Bertrand, MI;
Mrs. Elizabeth W. Heath,
