27 Jul 05 email from Margaret Ann Patterson maggieann@ryemead1.freeserve.co.uk corrected previous information on this family and gave the following written by Howard Winfield McNutt:

"In the Spring of 1847, Lambert Coombs, 50 years of age sold his farm near South Bend, Indiana... organised a wagon train to go to California.  The wagon train was made up by his sons, daughters and their wives and husbands and children, along with their horses and cattle.  A few other people joined the wagon train at Independance MO..  There were 47 wagons in the outfit and the Mountain man James Clymann was the guide.  The Coombs wagon train reached Sutton Fort, California in the late Fall of 1847.  They were the last wagon train over the mountains before the ill fated Donner party that became snow bound at Donner Lake with the loss of many lives.

The Coombs party camped on the banks of the Sacramento River not far from Fort Sutton until the Spring of 1848 before going to Napa Valley and settling and taking up land where the present City of Napa now stands.  Today the Napa High School is right on the spot where the old home place was.  When I was a baby 3 or 4 years old, my mother (your Grandmother McNutt) would take me and my brother Jim to visit her Grandmother, Martha Coombs Hardman at the old home in Napa.  My Grandmother Hardman and Great Uncles and Aunts would tell stories about their travels to California, wild stories about the Indians and wild animals."
