Elisha--Samuel, early life emigrated to west bank of Hudson River in
NY--probably Hudson City--md JEMIMA WARD of Hudson City--her father
owned land and slaves and was part owner of a toll bridge across the
river--seven children:
1.) oldest-MARY "POLLY" md a Christy, tailor in city of Hudson. (Guesstimate Polly born about 1768.)
There is a Polly Smith md to Sardine Stone 6 Dec 1796 in Wash Co. OH mg records.

WARD SMITH'S sister?? And thus a great Aunt of Sardine Stone Smith
born 1825?? The timing doesn't exactly fit with #1 above.
2.) JEMIMA=md John Hudson, a Methodist preacher-settled in GenesseeNY
3.) JANE= md David Smith, a farmer, tanner & Currier-lived nr Painted
Post on Chemung River. Six ch: ISRAEL, AMOS D., JOHN D., ALANSON B.,
JANE & DAVID.
4.) HANNAH= md Calvin Brookings, a farmer settled nr DAVID SMITH. 1
child.
5.) JAMES WARD SMITH-named for his mother's family. He=md ESTHER
ALDERMAN, dau of ELISHA & THANAKFUL(HUFF) ALDERMAN 17 Feb 1800 At
Schnectady NY on the Mohawk River abt 20 miles from its mouth. The
record of this mg was copied from the Bible of CARMI SMITH, and was
originally copied by him from a dictionary belonging to ALANSON SMITH.
Following written 8 Jan 1878 by MILTON SMITH 2ND CH OF JAMES WARD
and Esther (Alderman) SMITH: "JAMES WARD SMITH was born 15 Oct
1777 in Hudson City, NY. At this time the colonies were rejoicing over
the surrender of Burgoyne. James died in his 90th year at Plymouth,
Wash. Co., OH 9 Jul 1866. His wife, Esther (Alderman) Smith was born in
NY and her death occurred at Plymouth 21 July 1830 at age of 48."

6.) MATHIAS SMITH= Anna Whipple. 4 ch: ZENAS, LUCIUS, LOIS & JEMIMA.
7.) JOHN -md Kitty---.Their ch: OBEDIENCE, POLLY, LOUISA & SAMUEL.
John, the father reportedly a great hunter and wood chopper. He once
rode up to west door of the brick house on the hill (built by James Ward
Smith in Plymouth, Washington Co., OH in 1817) with a deer slung on the
packsaddle. The deer was probably one of the last seen in that section.
John had come to OH from NY abt 1815 bringing his wife Kitty, and three
small girls. They later moved to Canada where their son, Samuel, was
born. "My g grandfather, Carmi Smith, visited his Uncle John and fam in
Canada and spoke glowingly of a beautiful farm on which they lived."
