C: Roland went to Howard Co, MO in 1840 when he was 14. Apparently his brother Calvin went there at same time. Any of the other Strange's go also?
S: Roland's brother Martin also went. Both Calvin and Martin appear in the census for 1840 in Cole Co., MO., pg. 058.
C: Sharon I'm in the dark on this one also. I finally found the Twp to be the Unknown at the end of the Cole Co, list and I did find Martin Strange on p. 58 with 1m 30-39, 1 f 20-29, 1m 10-14, 2m 5-9 and 3m 0-4. But I couldn't find Calvin---looked several pages before and aft---no luck. Help me out on that census, please.
S: I lost my mind on that one. Actually, Martin showed up in Cole Co., in the 1840 census, I didn't find Calvin. In the 1850 census it was Calvin and Rowland who appear together in Ray County, 75th District, pg. 382. Martin then shows up in St. Clair County, Osceola Twsp., pg. 454 in the 1870 census. I believe this Martin is actually of the line Benjamin(1714), Benjamin Jr.( 1762), William (1776), Martin (1808). Benjamin Jr.'s brother was William (1738), father of Jesse (1764) who is our Henry's (1780) father. Given the naming of children, one has to think that these two families were in touch with one another pretty closely. Could be that Calvin and Roland went to MO knowing they had family that could help them there.
C: Families moved from one part of the country to another part, in groups. Roland Strange must have travelled with someone else if he was only 14. I think Calvin was born 1822, which would make him 18 in 1840. (Calvin's run of census reads much like Samuels---not much help because of inconsistency.)
S: Martin was born in 1819, making him 21 at that time. I'd guess it was not unusual for young men to strike out for better opportunities in that era. The ability to compete as a farmer with the large plantations must have been a challenge. In looking at the census, our direct family seems never to have held slaves, although the NC and GA branches did.

MO " came to Howard Co, MO abt 1840 from Halifax Co, VA.
1846 Nov 15, Calvin md Nancy M. Gross in Howard Co. MO.
John Mayer suggests that both Henry and Samuel had sons named Calvin and Rolland which may be the difference in the birthdate of 1818 above and the Calvin age 25 in 1850 census below. Until I have further evidence, I will leave this Calvin as born abt 1825 and son of Henry. (Dave Minson)
