Col Wm. Markham

Avon, June 29th, 1874.

Ebs. U. & A.:--Having a leisure hour, I send for insertion in your columns a leaf from the forthcoming History of Livingston county.

Colonel William Markham in our history of early settlement deserves honorable mention. He was born at East Haddam, Connecticut, in August, 1762, and died at his pleasant place near the dividing line of Rush and Avon, in January, 1827.

He married Phebe Dexter, and in 1786 purchased 300 acres in the town of Hartford, now Avon. At one time, we are informed, he was owner of a sixteenth part of the town.

Guy Markham, his son, is proprietor of the old homestead, and his farm, varied by swelling uplands, and rich, alluvial meadows, dotted with noble oaks and elms, is one of the most beautiful and desirable in Western New York. The subject of this sketch, Col. Wm. Markham, and Ransom Smith, were employed by Phelps and Gorham to run the first line of survey ever run to the Genesee River. His first stopping place in the Genesee country, after moving on with his family, was on the Honeoye, at the junction of that stream with the river, and he resided there about two years. Three Commissioners were appointed by the Legislature, after the erection of Livingston county, to build the Court House, Jail and Clerk’s Office, vix.: Dr. Daniel H. Fitzhugh, General William Wadsworth, uncle of the late Major General James S. Wadsworth, who fell in the battle of the Wilderness, and Colonel William Markham.

The latter, one of old Ontario’s representative men, served one term in the Legislature at Albany with great credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents. He voted for George Washington, President, and was ever a devoted admirer of that great man, “the first in war, the first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

He was a zealous member of the Masonic order, and was a Master of Genesee Lodge during the years 1807 and 1808. Their place of meeting was in the village of Hartford, now Avon.

During the Revolution he was a tried soldier, and, an Orderly Sergeant, commander of the guard as West Point the morning of Arnold’s disgraceful fight and the arrival of Generals Washington and La Fayette on a tour of inspection at that post. Orderly Sergeant Markham held the horse of the traitor when he mounted him and galloped away safety on board of the British sloop of war, Vulture, at anchor in the Hudson, a short distance from the Fort. When living he would give a graphic description of the parting scene between Arnold and his beautiful wife, a daughter of Chief Justice Shippen of Pennsylvania. He would also entertain listeners with a stirring narrative of Washington’s mien and lofty bearing, when the tale Arnold’s treason, on that eventful morning, was disclosed. With a chivalric courtesy, that he did not forget in the middle of his own grief and consternation at the terrible revelation of guilt on the part of one whom he had trusted and the country honored, he mitigated the agony of the traitor’s wife with words of consolation.

Arnold was not privy to her husband’s treason, and she was sent, by his order, under the safe protection of a flag to join her wretched husband.

This lady previous to her marriage with General Arnold, was the belle of Philadephia, and admired not only for the grace of her person, but for flashing wit and rare accomplishments.

This incident in the life of one Livingston’s early pioneers, is well worthy of historic record; also other events of his long, useful and chequered life, darkened at the melancholy close by aberrations of reason. The first bounty paid for a wolf’s scalp was granted to this brave old pioneer, and in the war of 1812 he played an important part, being active he waking patriotic ardor throughout Western New York. ---The fire of ’76 still burned bright in his soul, and many of his old companions in arms were coraged when he was superseded for high command by his junior, Gen. William Wadsworth, but it is little proud to wake into flame the embers of a long-buried feud. Both officers are at rest in honored graves and deserve well of their country. W. H. C. H.

MARKHAM --- At his residence, "Elm Place", near Avon, N. Y., November 21, 1892, Guy Markham, in his 93d year.

--Funeral from his late residence Wednesday, at 2 p. m.

Rochester Daily Union and Advertiser 11/22/1892 page 7, column 1

Avon, Nov. 22. ---Guy Markham died last evening at his hoome in Rush, two miles north of Avon. He was born September 14, 1800, in the town of Hartford, now Rush, and was at the time of his death the oldest male resident born within the limits of Monroe county. His father, Colonel William Markham, was the first settler in West Rush, and one of the best known of the earlier settlers of the Genesee valley.

Guy Markham was married June 25, 1835, to Miss Eliza Emma Williams, daughter of John and Marcy Williams of Goshen, Mass. Four children were born to them, William Guy Markham, who resides on the old homestead, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Isabella, ___ Emma. The latter is the wife of Charles C. Puffer, who resides in Avon, but has business interests in the city. Mary Isabella is the wife of Rev. M. Dunsford, who recently moved to this city. Mary Elizabeth never married. She resides at the homestead.

Mr. Markham’s life was passed in quietude upon the old homestead. He never engaged in politics and never held any public office. He was one of the crew of the first canal boat that was poled down the river to the canal. This boat was built by his father and his uncle, John Markham, on the north bank of Honeoye Creek and after having been loaded with farm produce was poled down the creek and river to the canal.

Up to the time of his death Mr. Markham’s memory seemed almost unimpaired and his reminiscences of early days were of unfailing interest. The noted Indians of the early years of the century were frequent visitors at Markham’s homestead.

Two page history of William George and Mary Dexter Richardson by  great
granddaughter, Sue Brandyberry, filed in Sue's file in  a July 31, 1991
envelope.  Excerpts follow:
Eight children--all had families of their own.  Frank, the oldest, had
children by two wives, after a divorce from the first. . .before the turn
of the century.
Harry did not marry until he was 40.  Raised 5 children, incl twins,
celebrated 50th wedding anniv & 90th birthday!
The Richardson children were all born in Marshall Co.  Most of them lived
in Kansas all their life.  Mabel moved to Michigan after mg and lived
there until her death.  Ase lived his last 21 years in OK.  The rest lived
mostly and died in nw KS.   .  .  .
WG and Mary lived in Marshall Co., KS from 1870-1892, then moved to
Lincoln Co., KS.

In 1907 they moved to Hill City, in Graham Co., KS where they built a
new house and where WG celebrated his 60th birthday.   He died in 1926,
age 78.  She died there in 1938 at the age of 90 of a heart attack.
A Swank cousin states that . ."Grandma Richardson...late 1920's [had] the most
beautiful furniture and dishes, but  Mary was 'terribly poor' with
little food or heat.    Apparently she did not sell any of the furniture or
dishes to help make ends meet, as there are many heirlooms to enjoy
today."
Their "new house" is still standing today, 1991, at 3rd and Hill, just
south of the "Dawson Place"..... a nursing home.   It is still attractive and
looks.(as if it has) received good care.
