Mary Cooper (descendant of Ransom, son of Elisha Jr.)
joined DAR through Elisha Sr. private in Capt Reuben Marcey's of 6th
Battalion-4th Co. Wadsworth Brigade, Windham Conn.
from book, Record of Conn. Men in the War of the Rev. page 412.
Her DAR #374854 accepted in 1948.
Carol's comment: It was 18 yr old Elisha JR. who was in Capt Reuben
Marcy's Co.
Carol has the following Rev war papers:
"Elisha Dexter 'JR.' (It DEFINITELY SAYS 'JR.') In Col. Chester's Reg of
CT., "D" under CAPTAIN REUBEN MARCY, July 8 1776. Ashford Aug 22,
1776. In the Continental service at New York. (arrived at N.Y. 27 July
1776)" Discharged Dec 25, 1777.
There is also an Elisha Dexter, Matross in Elliott's Artillery Regiment
from Rhode Island in Nov 1778, "D". Is it the same Elisha Jr? ELISHA
SENIOR would be age 47 in 1778.

Clarissa also wrote that she has Revolutionary Papers of a John Dexter,
Sargeant, Roll of Vermont 28 Sep 1819.
It says "John Dexter of Windsor Co., in state of Vermont in the
Connecticut line." JOHN DEXTER, Serjt, is also on a list of "Connecticut
pensioners by act of 1818, residing in Vermont." pg 639 of" Connecticut
in the Revolution."
Carol Minson asked Evelyn if we needed the above information.
Evelyn ans: "Yes, I have thought the VT Dexters possibly brothers of
Elisha Sr. These counties were right next to where Elisha lived in
Acworth NH, and the state line wasn't always where it is now."

[Myrtle, the "Metropolitan TORONTO & Vicinity" map might give you more
of a grasp of the following data.]
The following information is on the children of Elisha Dexter, Sr:
"From the records of D. W. Smith, surveyor general from 1792, we find
that Asa Dexter was given a provisional grant of Lot 44 on the east side
of Yonge Street(York Twp., now Toronto, Canada) in 1797, and at the
same time John Dexter was confirmed in Lot 43, adjacent to Asa. In
1800 however, these lots were regranted to Arnold Rowley, on condition
that he compensate the Dexters for improvements made."
"Elisha Dexter was given Lot 35, concession 6 in Markham Twp. in 1807."
"Thomas Dexter paid for the survey of his lot in Oxford in 1798."

"There are a number of references to the Dexters in the records of the
Quarter Sessions of the Peace, which was the magistrates court as well
as the instrument of local governnment. Both John and Elisha Dexter
served on juries, and Elisha was a constable in Vaughan Township in
1800. In 1804, John's wife, Jenny, released her dower right in a land
sale."
"The York directory for 1837 lists the following Dexters:
A. Dexter, Con 2, Lot 10 Albion Twp. (Peel Co.) (Who is "A" Dexter?)
E. Dexter, Conc 5, Lot 8 King Twp." (Does "E" stand for Elisha, or Elijah?)
Hiram Dexter, Conc 1, Lot 37, Vaughan Twp.
Mrs. Dexter Concession 1, Lot 34, Vaughan Twp.
The York Directory for 1846-7, lists an Elijah Dexter, but gives no
address.
The York Directory for 1856 lists a Thomas Dexter, a butcher, on Yonge
Street. In 1868-9 Thomas Dexter has become a Provision Merchant at
155 Jarvis St."
The Peel Co Directory for 1873-4 lists an Amos Dexter, 3rd Conc W,
Lot 27, east half, in the new survey of Toronto."

Myrtle, the following is a wonderful help and a delight to read. Did I

Clarice Griggs wrote in 1970: Do you know where the proof of Elisha Sr.
& children are listed in his son's will? I would think near Rochester.
(What's the question? cdm)
She wrote again Aug 17, 1975: "The DAR is requesting info re the
children of our Revolutionary ancestor. They are asking for sources of
info. I have Mansfield records, but have no idea where ELISHA JR &
SOPHIA LIVINGSTON were md. I have no info on ASA, AMOS or LYDIA. I
think PHOEBE MARKHAM lived at Avon(?) My land records give info on
JOHN, ELISHA JR & THOMAS, but I don't know where THOMAS went after
1806 or where he came from to Canada. Do you have a definite death
date of ELISHA SR? I use after 1794, NY.
"Since our folks were around Avon NY before Livingston/Monroe counties
were formed, I haven't the vaguest notion where to look for records.. . .
I still hear from Mary Cooper who sent Evelyn the records on RANSOM
DEXTER. . ."
(Carol Minson had most of this info, but so unorganized, I could not have
found it in 1975. Computers! The only way to access so much info.
It is still difficult to grasp it all.)
