Marshall County completely square.  5 twp going south and
5 twp going east and west.
3 1/2 miles from Will Dexter's (formerly Asahel Dexters home) to Ed
Dexters home.  (latter is the only Dexter house standing in 1985.
Asahel's granary still standing. It's about 1/4 mile from the road.  good
solid corn crib close to it.  Big enough you could drive right in with
horses and wagon.  Had cats.
The Indians in this area were Osage and Sioux.  Osage made bows from
the Osage Orange Tree.
Ralph said he "started to run away----3/4th down the lane, sat down and
thought about it and then went back home."

Ralph Dexter story
"This same place that we lived on (Will Dexter farm out to Home, Marshall Co, Kansas). . . I don't know if I ever told you this, but Jesse James gang came there and Dad (Will) always told about that.  That was when Dad was a boy and I don't know how old he was.  He said they were very considerate.  All they wanted was some food."
Carol:  "Did the Jesse James gang pay for the food?"
Dad:  "I think the did."
[Will Dexter came to Marshall Co in 1870- at age 9.  The above incident would have happened 1870-1882.  " Jesse James formed robber band in 1866.  He died in 1882."  Worldbook]

8th grade examinations 9th of April 1920:  John Sanderson took his in
Marysville. Ralph took his in Home City and walked 5 miles down through fields.

Railroad went through in 1910 and then Winnifred sprung up.

Big Blue River goes through Marysville.  Ralph worked one summer at the
Round House.

Ralph said: "Dad (Will Dexter) left 4 of us children.  Wilma & Margaret
got 1/4; Frederick got 1/4; I got 1/2--the buildings and the home place."
Ralph said "give Mother the house and we'll divide the farm equally."
"We sold the farm right before or right after mother's death." (Hettie
Hewitt Dexter died 1957.)
Ralph sold "Home farm"  2 years before Dexters would have had it 100
years!  (1870-1968?)

Ratings as a teacher included some of the following comments:

"Christmas 1954.  Dex.  Your interest in making things go right; your
interest in helping your students grow up to be worthwhile citizens; the
competent meanner in which you handle the driving program and various
other assignments; and your sense of humor are a few things which make
our relationship satisfying--at least from my viewpoint.  Art Thompson
Principal."

6/16/60  "Dex.  Thanks a million for all the extra time and effort you put
in on this job.  I know I fail to express it but I really appreciate the work
you do and 'guff' you have to put up with from coaches and principals.
Sincerely Em."

2/5/70  "Underneath Mr. Dexter's rather harsh inflexable shell is a heart
as big as all out-doors.  He has developed his own teaching methods and
techniques that have proven quite effective for most of his sophomore
students.  He has found, however, that some students are unable to
adjust and find it very difficult to understand the Dexter philosophy.
While Mr. Dexter has been a hard task master, he is remembered and
appreciated by those who he has taught or coached.  Many former
students come to see  'Dex' when returning from college or a tour of duty
in the service."  Emery B. Piper, Assistant Principal.
(Ralph was 65 and retiring.)

notes by David Minson. My mother loved her grandfather. She referred to him as Daddy Jack. She lived with her grandparents at times while she was growing up. She was born on his farm in Lisco Nebraska. Daddy Jack was in many ways her father since her parents were divorced.

In 1987, Mom visited a woman in a rest home who was the sister of Merrit Sechlar (Jack's best friend). She said they had lived across from the Woodcox home in St. Joe. She said it was the only house in town with two staircases.

Carl Sandburg described my grandfather:
"Who was that early sodbuster in Nebraksa?  He leaned at the gatepost and studied the horizon and figured what corn might do next year and tried to calculate why God ever made the grasshopper and why two days of hot winds smother the life out of a stand of wheat and why there was such a spread between what he got for grain and the price quotd in Chicago and New York."

I was now twelve years old and fatherless, with one brother three years

This means Letty was 5 years younger than Rebecca which could mean
that she was 7 years old in 1853. = 1846.   Rebecca b  Nov.1840 so
Rebecca turned 13 two months later.  This might mean Letty was born
1847.

eleven years old and brother, Richard, thirteen years old to take care of the cows, hogs and to keep house.  Think of a sixteen year old girl staying alone with two children for three months," - Rebecca.

(1863)  Rebecca (Hewitt) Adams Journal:  "We now heard we could get another land warrant instead of the one we had lost.  We took a claim and built a house about three miles from where we now lived on a small
creek called Center Creek.   (Pottawatomie County, Kansas ?) We put up a good log house also a kitchen and _____ and fenced ten acres.  This was the spring the war came up between the North and South or the Late
Rebellion which caused times to be very hard and work scarce.  My husband got some work at his trade and we had two good cows and raised a very good crop.
On June 4, 1863 our second babe was born and she was another dear little girl.  We named her Agnes Lettie.

She was a month old when my husband and brother-in-law and several others started out on the plains to put up hay or do any kind of work they could find to do.  My sister, Lettie,(abt 17) was with me. . ." (Jul 1863)

That winter,  (1864) brother William went to Council Bluffs after my sister Lettie who was yet single and a dear good girl and fond of children.  I was relieved of that care (of the children) and as we had quite a comfortable house I begin to get some relief.

ABT 1865:  I went to Ft. Kearney to be married.  (Rebecca is 24 years old.) Brother Richard made us welcome for he liked the soldier boy who he now called brother.  When Brother Will came, he was now grown and said.  "You have now married a soldier.  You can lookout for no one."  I was so proud and indignant that I did not try to make any attempts to please him or explain.  He took sister Lettie (abt 19) away to go to school and said he would bring his wife back with him.  I helped to get
Lettie ready and the day she left, little Rinda cried and would not be comforted as she dearly loved her Aunt Lettie.  It seemed as if her heart would break.
