_________________________________________________________

(I wrote the following for myself last May.  I think I would like to share
it with you.)

"As I think about Jane and her 13 children, I ache for her. She lost her
first, her eldest daughter at age 22, newly married (in childbirth? where
did I get that?).  Then  Jane's #5 child, a son, died 2 days before he
turned 18.  That must have been tragic for her.  And then, her daughter
Margaret had a 6 month old baby die, followed by Margaret's own death
six weeks later.  Margaret was 36 when she died on 11 May 1885, of
cancer.

"Sixty-eight year-old Jane, was in Canada, helping Margaret during this
traumatic time.  (about Jan of 1887)

"And that is when William got his niece, Jennie pregnant.

"I understand that she was teaching and Will was giving her rides to and
from school.  Jennie supposedly had begged some of the family to get her
other transportation.  I wonder if she saw the danger?  She was only 17,
the eldest daughter of George Dexter who was the eldest son, of Asahel
and Jane Dexter.

"I am sure her family was  devastated.  What a terrible thing it must
have been to/for the whole Dexter family.  The time period, the strong
Baptist backgrounds, and the  neighborly closeness of the brothers and
sisters  must have torn them apart.

"I read in the church booklet of John Sanderson's where Will and Jennie
were both taken off the church rolls.  By that time the whole Dexter
Family in Marshall County numbered approximately 60 people.  I  wonder
if this tragedy was kept secret or did it stir up much talk and gossip?

"I ached for that little mother, Jennie, whose child, Lacy, was
supposedly raised by the Nathan Smiths.  I ache for Jennie who
eventually moved to Idaho but came back to the Smith home once when
her boy was about 6 years old.  She supposedly sat at the dining table
with him and cried, tears welling up in her eyes, the whole time she was
there.

"Jennie died at Grants Pass, Oregon, age 85, never married.  I wonder
what her life was like.  Did she ever recover from this event?

"I feel sorrow for Lacy, the boy who grew up with parents other than his
own.  At age 14  he is in the 1900 Shawnee County Census with an
unknown (by me) family.  (Lacy born Oct 1887--adopted by Nicholas &
Amelia Eller.  Lived in Monmouth, Shawnee Co, Kansas in 1900.)

"But the person I identify with most of all, because I am 60 years old, is
Jane.  Jane who was 68 years old when this happened.  Jane who had had
13 children.   Jane, another eldest daughter (me too)  who changed
(battled?  strayed? converted?) from a strong Anglican Family to
becoming a strong Baptist.  Jane died soon after this last family tragedy,
in 1887, age 70.

"This whole story  makes me feel sad.   As a family historian, my view
is a long ways removed, but even removed, I feel the tragedy of the
whole thing.  My hope in my Savior, Jesus Christ,  is that wrongs will
somehow be righted;   that the suffering of innocent people will
somehow and at sometime,  be for their good; that the pain involved will
not be for naught."

She had the following children:

  M i
Lacy DEXTER was born Oct 1887 in , , Kansas.

1900, June 12 census for Monmouth, Shawnee, Kansas.
Eller and Amelia Nicholas age 48 and 41, md 20 years from Illinois have
6 children. and have
LACY DEXTER, "ADOPTED"  b Oct 1887, Kansas, KS, KS, age 12.

Biography of P. A. Shurts, pages 970/971.  History of
DeKalb County, Indiana; B. F. Bowen & Company, Inc.,
Indianapolis, 1914.
A man who has won a competence by working long and hard in
the proper direction and is now living surrounded by the
comforts of life as a result of his former years of
strenuous endeavor, is P. A. Shurts, of Concord township,
DeKalb county, Indiana. He is one of the sturdy spirits who
contributed largely to the material welfare  of the
locality in which he resides, having been one of the
leading farmers and stock men for many years, and as a
citizens he has always been public spirited and progressive
in all that the term implies.  P. A. Shurts was born on
April 6, 1849, in Spencerville, DeKalb county, Indiana, the
son of George and Martha  E. (Miller) Shurts, natives of
Ohio. These parents had the following children: Mrs.
Samantha Kimes, who died in 1908; Uriah, who died in March,
1913; Mrs. Emily C. Woodcocks, of St. Joe, this county;
John, of Chicago; P. A., the immediate subject of this
sketch; Mrs. Hattie R. Culberson, of Auburn, this county,
and George T., who lives in Columbus, Ohio.  P. A. Shurts
secured his education in the common schools of his native
locality and Auburn and was reared to manhood mainly in the
home of William Phillips, his own father having died when
the subject was but four years of age. He did not need his
father's attention, however, as Mr. Phillips gave the lad
all the love and protection that his own father would have
done and Mr. Shurts took up the vocation of teaching and
was thus engaged for ten terms, several of which were in
the school located on the farm that he now owns.  The farm,
which consists of sixty acres, is  known as Locust Grove
farm, named by Mr. Shurts in 1901, and has for many years
been considered one of the most fertile and productive
farms in Concord township. Mr. Shurts has given careful and
intelligent direction to his efforts, supervising every
detail of his farm work, and his efforts have been rewarded
with abundant returns for his toil.   On June 8, 1873, Mr.
Shurts was married to Maggie M. Boyle, daughter of Jonathan
and Susan Boyle, and to this union were born two daughters,
Ella Myrtle and Pearl, the former of whom died in early
childhood. Mrs. Shurts was born in Concord township, this
county, on March 1, 1852, and died on July 9, 1913, in the
sixty-second year of her age. Early in life she was a
member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Spencerville,
but after her marriage she united with the Concord
Methodist Protestant church. She was a true Christian,
faithful wife and loving mother and her death left a void
in the community which cannot be filled. Personally, Mr.
Shurts is a very congenial gentleman, always ready to
assist in any worthy cause looking to the betterment of his
community and he has a host of friends throughout the
county who esteem him for his high character and genuine
personal worth. Politically, he is a party Prohibitionist,
being the first to endorse that movement in Concord
township in 1884.
