Notes from Carol Dexter Knowlden  31 Aug 2000

Height about 5'7". Light Red-Gold Hair. Head held stiff and at a slant because of a wagon accident.

Asahel John Dexter used his middle name all of his life as did all except two of his brothers and sisters.

John owned and farmed in Center Township. He sold this farm and purchased another farm at the edge of the town of Marysville KS, along the Big Blue River.  He farmed this until his son, Lloyd, started working this land for his father. In 1924, John Dexter was elected president of the Board of Education. He owned and operated a coal business in the early 1920's. In April of 1935, John was voted in as Mayor of the town of Marysville, KS. John stayed very active in civic affairs for most of his later years. John drove a parcel post delivery truck during the 1940's. John was a very religious man and whenever the pastor was out of town he filled in for him. His Bible was well worn with many written notes in the margins of most of the pages. After his wife's death, John lived for many years with his daughter Ethel and her children in Marysville, KS.
