Early pictures  of Rebecca and John Adams- 

1-)Probably painted about when they married    May 30, 1858.These

pictures were hung in big frames in Connie Fry's parents homes.  They

were on cardboard--evidently still are.  Connie Fry has them in her

posession.

 

 2-)Rebecca looks about 70--    possibly taken about the time she was

finishing up her life story in her Journal....1910.

 

3-) Rebecca looks about 75--possibly taken shortly before she died in

1915. In her Journal pg 25 she said she and Elijah Bradley had been md

50 years: md July 5 1865 + 50 years  =1915.

1840  Nov 22, Rebecca born Fountain Co. IN.

1842  Rebecca and fam were in Chaney Creek, nr Nauvoo, Hancock, IL.

1847   July 9, arrived in Tahlequah, I. T.

1848   abt Sept. Went to Cedar Creek, TX.

1849   Lived 10 mi above Austin TX.

1850   Moved to Lampasas River 5 mi from Briggs, TX.

1851/2  Went back to  Cherokee Nation near Tahlequah.

1853   Spring  they  moved to McCoy's Prairie 15 mi away.

1853   Sept 15, Rebecca's father, Richard Hewitt died.

1854   Rebecca's mother, Jarusha & children move to Benton Co. AR.

1856   Spring  Moved to KS between Atchinson & Leavenworth.

1915   10 days later Rebecca age 75, died also.  Both buried at Niangua.

 Rebecca's mother, "Jarusha" Parker was a seamstress,  half Indian, Cherokee. born Trenton, NJ. moved with parents to Ohio when 6 years old...  Rebecca Aurilla Cohen, a grand dau of Jerusha's wrote in 1927.

9 APR 1855  DECLARATION  by   Rebecca's mother, Jerusha, at Benton Co., Arkansas..her maiden name, mg date & place, death date & place of Richard, signed Jarusha Hewitt.

MARRIAGE of Rebecca to John Adams 30 May 1858. He died of accidental gunshot wound getting on a horse.

8 Dec 1851 at Bell Co., Texas, Rebecca's father made application for BOUNTY LAND RECORDS:  Richard Hewitt, age 57(had been) IN CAPT CAMPBELLS HORSE REG OF OHIO VOLUNTEERS SEPT 1 TO NOV 1814. 

 

Marilyn Schmidt published a  typed copy of Rebecca’s journal.

REBECCA'S journal says she has a sister 3 years older and a brother 6 years older than herself and a brother 3 years younger and a sister 5 years younger.    She also said her father, Richard Hewitt died 15 Sept 1852.

 1856 -   from Rebecca Hewitt's Journnal, pg 6-7:

We lived in Arkansas over two years and in the spring of 1856 we moved to Kansas, near Atchison, or rather between Atchison and Leavenworth. My Mother found a sister who lived near *Iatan, Missouri who she had not seen for years.   Her name was Masterson and she had a daughter named Rebecca Baldwin who was three years older than me and larger so I was known as little Becca. . .*In Platte County, Missouri on the Missouri River midway between Atchison and Leavenworth Kansas.

Rebecca Baldwin 13 in 1850 would be 19 in 1856.

Rebecca Hewitt b 1840 would be16 in 1856

Excerpt from Rebecca’s journal:

“I was borned in Fountain County, Indiana on November 22, 1840.  My parents were members of the Latter Day Saints Church.  My mother's maiden name was Jerusha Parker.   She was born in the year 1800 at Trenton, New Jersey and moved with her parents to Ohio when she was six years old.  My father was born in Kentucky and baptized by Orson H. Hyde. (Bishop Miller-according to LDS church records.)   At the time of the massacre of the two prophets we lived on Chaney Creek about ten miles (south of) Nauvoo, Illinois.” 

Riley Co. KS Gen group.  sent the mg record of Rebecca and John Adams:
"1858 May 29, John L. Adam of Rock Creek and Rebecca Maria Hewitt of Rock Creek were md by Jacob Emmons Justice of the Peace at Emmons house near St. George; witnessed by Wm and Louisa Emmons."
Westmoreland, Pottawatomie Co. mg records."  This was mg #7 on the Westmoreland books.

Note from letters from Edith Wilson (granddaughter of Rebecca Mariah Hewitt) to Etta Mae Hewitt  April 1972:  and  March 1972

After the death of John Adams, Rebecca went to NY as her husband asked her to.  She had a time on the train as Agnes was only a very small baby and took sick and Grandma ran out of diapers so had to use John Adams large handkerchief.  Then in the fall of 1854 she came back to Kansas. 

John Adams was accidentally shot "in NE.  He lived one hour.  Grandma sold everything, wagon and horses and went on to New York by stage coach that was her husband's wish.  He wanted her and daughters to meet his relatives.  She spent two weeks there.  spoke very highly of them.

 EE Bradley belonged to Co A 1st Nebr VC.  Feb 7 1866 he was mustered out.  Nelvita Jones also said:  First child Richard Nelson Bradley bo in NE north of Ft. Kearney I think  May 30 1867 in a dugout on a soldier's claim. The winters were so cold they moved to S. E. Kansas and the to Benton Co. ARK where Katie Belle Bradley  June 21 1871 and Rebecca Aurilla were born near Cherokee.  When they left AR they went to Baxter Sprigs KS and lived for a while then moved to Webb City having been preceded by their dau & her husband Florinda  & Daniel Bradford about 1876.

1863 Feb 27,  Letter to Pension Comissioner from Manhattan Riley Kansas,  " Jarusha Hewitt d 8 Feb 1862 LEAVING 2 MINOR HEIRS."... "WIDOW NEVER DREW 120 ACRES BLW TO WHICH SHE WAS ENTITLED."

1865/1866 letters of E.E. Bradley and his wife Rebecca.  Nov 1865,  Dec 1865,   Jan 1866   letters were copied by Wm. N. McGoon in 1931 who also wrote short histories of Enoch E Bradley  and  Richard Hewitt.

She and Enoch Elijah Bradley  moved to Niangua, Webster Co. Mo in 1907

 1865:  (William Jacob Hewitt is brother to Rebecca (Hewitt) Bradley. Rebecca Bradley is Katie Bradley"s mother.   and Katie Bradley is the mother of Wm N. McGoonBrief bio sketch by Wm N. McGoon in 1972. ) "WILLIAM HEWITT, son of Richard Hewitt.  Ran a stage station (and general store) on the Blue River in NE after the Civil War.  He made his home with his sister, REBECCA and her two daughters.(1865 July) When Rebecca md a soldier, William left and went to Santa Barbara, CA where he md a woman and to whom were born ten children.

 Brief bio sketch in 1972 letter written by Edith McGoon Wilson, gdau Enoch and Rebeca Bradley:  "When E. E. Bradley and Rebecca were first married, (1865) they took a soldiers claim in Nebraska and lived in a dug-out as it was called.  But they didn't live there long.

1867 Their oldest child, NELSON was born in Nebraska."Soon as Grandpa Bradley was out of the army, they moved down into KS around Marysville, KS.

After the death of Jerusha,  they moved to S.W. KS, but didn't live there very long.

 (          )Moved on to AR, living there 5 or 6 years.  Katie Bell and Rebecca were born in AR, due to the illness of SOLOMON BRADLEY, Grandpa's father.

In 1901 William McGoon and wife Katie moved to Wright Co. Mo where Edith Leona was born.

1904  Nov 16 they moved on a farm belonging to Grandpa and Grandma Bradley 1 mi west of Niangua, MO.

1907, May 28, here Irene was born and Frank was b July 2 1909.

1909 fall,-1915 we moved to Holden, MO, living there 6 years when Grandma Bradley got them to move back to the farm west of Niangua.

1910 William left Santa Barbara and made his home for a time with his neice KATIE MCGOON. 1912  He later went to Arkansas and in 1915 he became ill with Brights Disease and went to the home of his sister REBECCA BRADLEY at Niangua, MO. He died about 10 days after reaching Rebecca's home.  Rebecca Bradley died 10 days after her brother William in 1915.  WILLIAM is buried in the Free Will Baptist cemetery at Niangua, MO.

1912 Jul 9th my baby brother Edward was born.  . . .my favorite. . cared for him till I was married in 1926. . .happy in Niangua, yet . . .Holden we had to leave many school mate friends and our Sunday School friends. . .Our Dad knew nothing about farming and anyway the Ozarks wasn't any place for a family at that time.  Irene and I had 1 dress apiece and never had a new coat till we were married.  Irene ran off and md at 17.  I was almost 21 1/2 when Ezra and I were married. Since 1926 I have lived in Kansas: Marion KS 16 yrs; Delaven KS 7 years; Waverly KS 11 yrs; and Garnett KS 12 years this last Feb 14, 1972."

BRADLEY was born Nov 22, 1840 Fountain Co.Indher Fathers  name was RICHARD HEWITT  her Mother's maiden name was JARUSHA J. PARKER. REBECCA M. HEWITT was married to John L. Adams May 30 1858 two children was born to them FLORINDA JANE  & AGNES L. ADAMS. Was left a widow Aug 14 1864 July 5, 1865 was married to E. E. BRADLEY to this union three children was born namely RICHARD NELSON BRADLEY of Niangua, MO & MRS. KATIE B McGOON of Niangua MO & MRS. REBECCA A. COWEN of Webb City
