Pictured below is the feed yard nw of the Hays 2nd home in Dawson County. Located on Section 9, it was 5 1/2 miles north and 2 miles east of Cozad. The Hays Family moved here when Jim Hays was 11 years old (1906). He seemed distressed about that move. Said he didn't understand why his Dad had moved to that second place. It was located 5 miles north of their first home on Section 4.
Jim said "On the second place we had 8 or 10 horses. No irrigation! Wheat didn't do much. Needed water. They planted corn. Had hogs. The feed lot was here."
"First house faced south. Folks had 160 acres there, all prairie. There was a sod house right in the back of the first house. But it was all prairie. All of us Hays children went to school in Cozad until we moved to the 2nd house. Then we went to a country school"
