===========================================================MORE DETAILS FOLLOW:

1826 Jul 26: Birth of ROLAND STRANGE, at Halifax, VA. BVS at Osborne, Kansas, Co. seat, gave Roland's birth place. Roland's obit says the same. Also several different census records of his and his children say Roland was born in VA. .

There is controversy as to whether Roland's father is Samuel Strange or Henry Strange or even someone else. Roland's birth date fits nicely as the first child of Samuel Strange. In 1830 census, however, Samuel of Halifax Co, VA, the only Samuel listed in the whole 1830 census, has no male child listed. On the other hand, in 1830, Henry Strange on the same census page has 2 male children 5 and under, which makes him a likely candidate for father of Roland. Mrs. Addie Strange, w/o Samuel Adams Strange--s/o Samuel Strange--brother of Roland Strange ---says that Henry was Roland's father. 1880 census of Roland says both his parents born in VA.

--------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------
NEW DATA: 1830: Census of Halifax Co, VA. There are 2 Samuel Stranges in the 1830 Halifax Co, VA censuses. (Sharon Capezza found another!)

(Our Samuel is 28 in 1830. BUT HIS CENSUS AGES FLUCTUATE SO MUCH WE CAN'T RELY ENTIRELY ON THE CENSUS. See Samuel Strange's notes.)

1830: Halifax Co, VA Census:
#1. Samuel Strange 1 M 20-29, 1 F 15-19, 1 F <5. p. 433 (likely Samuel b 1802-1895)

#.2 Samuel Strange 1 M 30-39, , 1 F 20-29, 2 F 5-10, 1 M 5-10, 1 M under 5, 1 F <5. (Who knows where this Samuel fits---Is he possibly father of Roland who was b 1826?
(At this point Mrs. Addie Strange's statement above holds for me. Carol Minson.)
--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------
1840:. #1. Samuel Strange's 1840 census has no male of 14 or 15.
Henry Strange's 1840 census has a male of 15-19-which might be Roland. However see obit below.

1840: Roland's obit said he went to Howard Co, Missouri at age 14 which would be 1840.

"Samuel Adams Strange--Mrs. Addie Strange of Kendall, Wash. furnished me with this brief sketch of her husband's family: (all in red sent by Iva Strange Campbell abt 1960.)

" Samuel Adams and brothers Charlie and Will of Blue Rapids, KS were sons of Samuel Strange of Halifax Co, VA.
"Samuel had seven brothers, (1) MARTIN, (2)JOHN C., (3)PAUL, (4)JOSEPH, (5)CALVIN and (6)ROLLAND. THEIR FATHER WAS HENRY STRANGE, he lived in Campbell Co,VA, not far from Lynchburg.
Henry Strange's father is reported to have come from Scotland and to have been related to Sir Robert Strange, the Artist of London. (1) (1) Martin is said to live in Alabama
(2) John was killed in the rebellion, (3)Paul died in Missouri, (4) Joseph died in California, (5) Rolland lived in Kansas. (6) Ben lives in Colorado and (7)Calvin is thought to be dead. A nephew of Samuel Adams named Samuel T. lives in Montana. Samuel Adams has two children W. L. and Charles A. Both live in Tokoma, Wash."

1846 Dec 31: Roland Strange (age 20) was married to Matilda Gross in Ray Co, MO, by John Wills, J.P. (Mg. records of Ray Co, MO.)

1848 Mar 5: Rachel Elizabeth Strange d/o Roland & Matilda. (Iva Campbell)
Probably died as an infant. Not in 1850 census nor in subsequent census.

1849 Feb 27: William Thomas Strange s/o Roland/Matilda, born in MO.

1851, March 5: "Nancy Jane, Child #3" of Roland/Matilda Strange b in Clay Co. MO."

"Between 1820 & 1828. . . early settlers, (of Clay County, MO). . .William Strange."
LA Library, Clay County. pg 425. (Is William an Uncle of Roland Strange?)

1820 & 1830: There are NO STRANGE'S in Books of Census Indexes of 1820-1830.

Ray Co formed in 1820 from Howard County. Ray County seat at Richmond.
Clay Co formed in 1822 from Ray Co-Clay County seat at Liberty.
Roland reputedly went to Mo at age 14= 1840. He md in 1846 in Ray Co. MO.

C. Minson checked the 1840 and 1850 census of Clay Co. MO, years ago....did not find anything. Good idea to check the 1830-1840-1850 census book indexes for Clay Co. MO again now, for Stranges. There are some new book indexes available now in 2002.

Ancestry.com has no "Missouri" data at all, listed in their 1820 index.
Ancestry.com has no Stranges listed in their 1830 MO index.
Ancestry.com has 5 Stranges listed in their 1840 MO index.:
"Martin of Cole Co, and a George M, Obadiah, J.C. & John B Strange of Johnson Co."

Ancestry.com has 14 Strange families listed in their 1850 MO index. Three of those families of Ray and Clay Co are listed below. George E. Strange is in Howard Co age 35 in 1850.. The MO counties of the other 10 families were not adjacent to Ray or Clay Co.

1850: Census of 75th District of Ray Co. MO p. 1364 or p 382.

1857: The Samuel Strange family moved from Carroll Co, VA to Doniphan Co, KS.

1858 Oct 10: Roland/Matilda's #6 ch, Francis Marion b. Rockport, Atchison Co, MO.

(Trivia from Helen Kracht: "The founder of Marysville and Marshall Co, Frank Marshall came from Platte Co. MO which borders Clay Co MO.

What DID bring the Strange's to Marshall Co, KS?)

1858: "Roland moved from MO to Troy, KS." (Roland's obit.)

According to full birth dates given by Iva Campbell: Wm Thos is 11; Jane 9; John C. 7; Susan 5; and Francis M age 1.These latter ages correspond with the 1870 census, but not with the 1860 above.

1862 Aug: "They moved to Marysville, KS. and were there in the (1865 and)1870 census." (John Mayer) (Obit says they moved in 1863.)

1865 abt: A picture which says on back: "Grandpa Strange. Nancy Jane's father." That would be Roland Strange. He looks about 39 years old. If so it's 1865. What is the star-on-top-of --circle on his left lapel?

1865 Mar 2: "A list of lucky men who were drafted in Doniphan and Brown Counties, 5th Sub District...Marion, Wolf River and Wayne Townships...Roland Strange." (White Cloud Kansas Chief -sent by Sharon Capezza - from net. This conflicts with the 1862 or 1863 move to Marysville, KS above.)

1865 Jun 20: Roland/Matilda's #7 ch, Alice born Marshall Co, KS.

"R.Y. Strange ran the first hotel and livery ever in Irving and boarded the men who were building the Missouri Pacific railroad thru here. And in connection with the livery business the lad, John (Calvin Strange), and his brother Tom, ran the Pony Express between Irving and Clifton." .(John Mayer quotes Obit of Calvin Strange.)

"Irving is no longer in existence. It was located in Marshall Co, south of Blue Rapids, KS." (HK).

1868 about: Roland/Matilda's #8 ch, Charles E. born Marshall Co, KS.
(probably died young.)

#7- Alice was born seven years after #6- Francis M. (1858 - 1865). This spacing is greater than the birth dates of the rest of Roland/Matilda's children. Seems very likely that Roland Strange was in the Civil War. TO DO: Check for Civil War records for Roland Strange

1865? Another picture Roland looks older, more resigned. Might this have been taken when he came back from war? On back it says: "Central Gallery, Cor. Fourth & Edmond Streets, St. Joseph, Mo." Might even be Calvin, a brother of Rolands. Very similar features to Roland's picture.

1868: Roland's #8 ch, Charles E. born Marshall Co, KS. Probably died young. He is 2 in 1870, but not in either 1875 or 1880 census. Also, Roland's obit indicates that two of his children preceded him in death which would be Rachel Elizabeth and Charles E. Do not confuse him with his namesake, his nephew Charles Eddie Strange I born in 1872.( John Mayer)

1875: When did Roland Strange come to Blue Rapids? When did he homestead land in Blue Rapids? Marty Strange wrote that, "Samuel and two of his sons, Charles and William, homesteaded adjacent parcels in Blue Rapids with patents in 1875-1876 and 1881. Roland also shows up on Marshall Co. Land Records."

BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH: dates and death place (of Roland Strange) came from Iva Campbell's Bible Record. Iva (Strange) Campbell was the daughter of
Marion Strange, son of Rolan Strange. Iva also gave the names of his wife (Matilda Gross), her birth date, death date and place, as well as their seven (eight?) children and birth dates, and her father, Marion Strange's birth place and death date and place. She said all the data came from the Family Bible. (Who has this Bible-for proof of data?)
Iva Campbell said Nancy Jane Strange was #3 child of Roland's. However, Wm Thos's birth date of Feb 27 1849 is the only one given before Nancy J's. Likely there was a baby who died before the 1850 census. (Likely Rachel b Mar 5 1848-Iva gave date in another place.) Roland and Matilda md Dec 31 1846. Roland's obit said he had 8 children.
One other problem occurs in that Iva gave the birth date of Nancy J as March 4, 1850. However, Nancy is not even listed in the 1850 census, is erroneously listed as 13 in the 1860, and is 19 in the 1870 and 29 in the 1880. The majority of evidence indicates Nancy Jane Strange was born in 1851.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
1908 Aug 22: The following data came from the Obit of Rolin Strange who died in Alton, Osborne, KS, age 82 and 26 days.
1826: He was born in Halifax, VA.
(1840) At age 14 he came to MO. (Samuel Strange Fam were where in 1840?)
He md. Matilda Grooce (Gross). Eight children.
1858: moved to Troy, Doniphan Co, KS until
1863: moved to Marysville, Marshall Co, KS, where he married
1886 Jul 2: Married Mary L. Deering from Marshall Co.
-------the family moved to Sumner Twp, Osborne Co, KS until
1905: moved to Alton with Miss Carrie Deering (dau).
"Two of his children preceded him to the Spirit World. (A baby born abt 1847? and Charles E. Strange.)
(1908:) but is survived by his six children: T. Strange and Susan Saville of Blue Rapids, KS; (William Thomas)
Nancy Jane Hewitt of Jennings, OK;
J. C. Strange of Irving, KS (John Calvin. Irving-no longer in existence-was South of Blue Rapids.)
F.M. Strange (Francis Marion) and Alice Miller of Alton.
Mr. Strange has been in poor health for a long time."
Funeral at M.E. Church. 90th Psalm. Buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Alton."
(Helen Kracht found this obit and hand copied it from the "Alton Empire" news.)

==============================================================
TRY FOR ANOTHER OBIT: It's likely there is an obituary in the Blue Rapids (Marshall Co. KS) Times. We need more proof of Roland/Rolan's parents names. And when did Roland come to Marshall Co? And was he in the Civil War?

1957 Nov: Letter to Carol Minson from Iva Campbell cousin of William S. Hewitt:
"Will Hewitt and I were very close as cousins. He seemed almost
like a brother to me. He was such a good person. Used to stay with us and my grandfather Rolin Strange quite a lot when he was a young man. Worked on the farm for my grandfather. Aunt Jane (Will Hewitt's wife) was my favorite Aunt. Guess because she always made over me so much as did her mother, my grandmother, Matilda. I was six years old when she died and can remember all the family being there the children and grandchildren and their lovely big farm house which was close to the big blue river not far from the Hutchinson place and the Hutchinson Mill. . .
I can remember being over to grandfathers and grandmothers and how I loved grandma.
And I can remember going to spend a week or two during the summer with my Aunt Jane. They lived on a farm and I used to love to go down to the spring and get a good cool drink of spring water. They used to carry their drinking water . . .I can remember how Aunt Jane and Willie, as I called him, used to spoil me and were so good to me that no wonder I liked to go to my Aunt Janes. . .Aunt Jane was the third child of grandfather Rolin and Nancy Strange and my father was their sixth child I find according to our family Bible Record. . . I traced our family history as far as my grandfather Rolin Strange & his two brothers from the . . .history of the Stranges which is on file at the Congressional Library here in D. C. . . .we do have a most interesting background and a history to be proud of. . . Both the Strange & Campbell's have their family crest. . .
The information that I am sending you now I have taken from our family  Bible record."

Sept 2002--Carol's note to Shirley:
It's really surprising to me how drawn I am towards Samuel. I don't think he's my line. I think he's Roland's older brother. But as you can see from the census---they lived next door to one another for 10 years......so they must have been very good friends. I should look that up so I know for sure. Lets see--

They lived next to each other in Washington Twp, Doniphan Co, KS in 1860. By 1865 Roland has moved on the Marysville,--Samuel is still in Doniphan Co. KS
By 1870 Roland is in Blue Rapids---2 doors away from Samuel.
1875 and 1880 Roland is in Blue Rapids ---so is Samuel.
1885 Samuel & Eliz are in Marysville.
1886 Roland's wife, Matilda died in Irving-buried in Marysville.
1891 Elizabeth died in Marysville. Samuel remarried.
1893 Roland has remarried and moved to Alton, Osborne, KS

So they lived very close to one another for at least 20 years--maybe more. Yes, I think they must have been VERY GOOD FRIENDS.

Carol, the only stories I can recall that involved Roland are few and far between. BUT here is one. It was Christmas time and the tree in Samuels place had candles on it and a few presents. The man had gone turkey hunting but didn't find any so Roland brought 3 hens to be butchered and some presents to put under the tree as they were spending Christmas together. A side of beef was being roasted
outside over a snowy pit and the kids were made to watch over it. One of the girls came running in that the fire was dying down so Roland went out to put more wood on. While he was gone Samuel put a present under the tree for him. Christmas day was well started when the food was ready and the packages were being opened. All the boys got pocket knives and the girls got sewing kits. As a rule the grown ups didn't get gifts---only the kids.

But there was one gift left---Roland's. When he opened it he was flabbergasted! He got a store-bought fishing pole, hooks and the works! He was so happy he cried---and kept that gift as precious---from his brother that he knew loved him.
