==============================================
1829 Jun 20: Birth of Matilda Gross, d/o
Birthplace: 1880 says Wisconsin. 1870 says Missouri. Recheck.

BIRTH/MARRIAGE/DEATH: dates and death place came from Iva
Campbell's Bible Record. Iva (Strange) Campbell was the daughter ofMarion Strange who was son of Rolan Strange. She also gave the namesof his wife (Matilda Gross), her birth, and death date and place, as wellas their eight children and birthdates, and her father, Marion Strange's birth place and death date and place.

1846 Dec 31: Roland Strange(age 20) was married to Matilda Gross in Ray Co, MO, by John Wills, J.P. (Mg. records of Ray Co, MO.)

1848 Mar 5: Rachel Elizabeth Strange d/o Roland & Matilda. (Iva Campbell) Probably died as an infant. Not in 1850 census nor in subsequent census.

1849 Feb 27: William Thomas Strange s/o Roland/Matilda, born in MO.

1850: Census of 75th District of Ray Co. MO p. 1364
Rowland Strange 22 (he's really 24)
Matilda Strange 22
William S. Strange 2

1851, March 5: "Nancy Jane, Child #3" of Roland/Matilda Strange b in Clay Co. MO."

1853 Mar 18: Roland/Matilda's son, John Calvin born in Cedar, MO.
1855 May 18: Roland/Matilda's dau, Susan born in Independence, Jackson Co, MO.

1858 Oct 10: Roland/Matilda's #6 ch, Francis Marion b. Rockport, Atchison Co, MO.

1858: "Roland moved from MO to Troy, KS." (John Mayer-source?)
Wathena, is close to the Missouri River, and is about 8 miles east of Troy.. Both Troy and Wathena are in Doniphan Co, KS.
1860 Jul 23: Washington Twp, Doniphan Co, KS. po-Wathena; p 86, rh p. 957
(next door to Samuel Strange family.)

THOS 11 m MO attended school within year
JNO 9 m MO attended school within year
SUSAN 5 f MO
MARIAN (male) 2 f? KS (1870 & 1880 say born MO)

According to full birth dates given by Iva Campbell: Wm Thos is 11; Jane 9; John C. 7; Susan 5; and Francis M age 1.These latter ages correspond with the 1870 census, but not with the 1860 above.

1860-1861: "Roland ran a blacksmith shop. (John Mayer quotes Obit of Calvin Strange.) (If the blacksmith shop was in Troy, perhaps Roland's family lived between Wathena and Troy.)

1862 Aug: "They moved to Marysville, KS. and were there in the (1865 and)1870 census." (John Mayer) "R.Y. Strange ran the first hotel and livery ever in Irving and boarded the men who were building the Missouri Pacific railroad thru here. And in connection with the livery business the lad, John (Calvin Strange), and his brother Tom, ran the Pony Express between Irving and Clifton." .(John Mayer quotes Obit of Calvin Strange.)

"Irving is no longer in existence. It was located south of Blue Rapids, KS." (HK).

1865 abt: A picture which says on back: "Grandpa Strange. Nancy Jane's father." That would be Roland Strange. He looks about 39 years old. If so it's 1865. What is the star-on-top-of --circle on his left lapel?

1865 Mar 2: "A list of lucky men who were drafted in Doniphan and Brown Counties, 5th Sub District...Marion, Wolf River and Wayne Townships...Roland Strange." (White Cloud Kansas Chief -sent by Sharon Capezza - from net. This conflicts with the 1862 move to Marysville, KS above.)

Francis M.6 MO

1865 Jun 20: Roland/Matilda's #7 ch, Alice born Marshall Co, KS.

1868 about: Roland/Matilda's #8 ch, Charles E. born Marshall Co, KS.
(probably died young.) #7- Alice was born seven years after #6- Francis M. (1858 - 1865). This spacing is greater than the birth dates of the rest of Roland/Matilda's children. Seems very likely that Roland Strange was in the Civil War.

1868: Roland's #8 ch, Charles E. born Marshall Co, KS. Probably died young. He is 2 in 1870, but not in either 1875 or 1880 census. Also, Roland's obit indicates that two of his children preceded him in death which would be Rachel Elizabeth and Charles E. Do not confuse him with his namesake, his nephew Charles Eddie Strange I born in 1872.( John Mayer)

===============================-
1887: Helen Kracht's letter of 1-27-1992"
"I went to the (Marysville) cemetary today. Here is the information on stones.
Stones set in this manner [drawing in her letter]:
First stone from road about 3 ft high: MATILDA WIFE OF RY - FEB 10,
1886 AGE 56 YRS 7 MOS. STRANGE(on bottom of stone.)
Second small stone 4 feet from Deering stone (and 10 feet from Matilda stone),:
OUR BOY INFANT SON of FM & MA STRANGE."
Large stone 4 feet back of infant: (letter I believe) then
"A. DEERING/ DIED JULY 1887/ 18 YRS/ WE'LL MISS YOU DEAR SISTER."
Comment: The "infant son of FM & MA" may be Francis Marion (Strange) and Mary
Alice (Strange)...but that is a guess. It is unusual to not have the last initial attached, which would be "S" for Strange.
"A Deering died 1887", born 1879 may be sister to G Deering..

=================================
Here's a little more: MATILDA died Feb 10, 1886. Land was transferred
to NANCY HEWITT and S. SAVILLE 6 Aug 1886. (this at court house Book
39, page 452. SE quarter of Sect 29; Twp 2, Range 7. and on 4 July 1886
Roland md Mrs. M L and I do not have a last name but can get it at the court
house as this was in my list of Stranges too.")

1886: DEATH DATE: Obit of Samuel Saville, husband of Matilda's daughter,
Susan: "Matilda Strange. . .died Feb 16, 1886."
-------------------------------------

PICTURE: on back: "Grandparents on one side of family. I'm sure this the
Strange side -- his 1st wife." Picture shows bearded man about age 50,
and his wife (she looks younger, heavy set, maybe 40.) He has a metal
star pinned to his vest, just barely seen under the outer coat of his suit.
Printed below the picture is "Council Grove, Kan." The photographer's
name was "Aplington."

Correspondence from Iva Glynn (Strange) Campbell, eldest child of
Marion and Mary Alice (Deering) Strange. Iva Campbell lived at 2220
Austin St. Annandale, Va. in 1959 and was age 79 then. Probably died in
Annandale.

Letter to Carol from Iva Campbell (cousin of William S. Hewitt), Nov
1957: "Will Hewitt and I were very close as cousins. He seemed almost
like a brother to me. He was such a good person. Used to stay with us
and my grandfather Rolin Strange quite a lot when he was a young man.
Worked on the farm for my grandfather. Aunt Jane was my favorite Aunt.
Guess because she always made over me so much as did her mother, my
grandmother Matilda. I was six years old when she died and can
remember all the family being there the children and grandchildren and
their lovely big farm house which was close to the big blue river not far
from the Hutchinson place and the Hutchinson Mill. . . I can remember
being over to grandfathers and grandmothers and how I loved grandma.
And I can remember going to spend a week or two during the summer
with my Aunt Jane. They lived on a farm and I used to love to go down to
the spring and get a good cool drink of spring water. They used to carry
their drinking water . . .I can remember how Aunt Jane and Willie as I
canned him used to spoil me and were so good to me that no wonder I
liked to go to my Aunt Janes. . .Aunt Jane was the third child of
grandfather Rolin and Nancy Strange and my father was their sixth child
I find according to our family Bible Record. . . I traced our family history
as far as my grandfather Rolin Strange & his two brothers from the . .
.history of the Stranges which is on file at the Congressional Library
here in D. C. . . .we do have a most interesting background and a history to
be proud of. . . Both the Strange & Campbelll's have their family crest. . .
The information that I am sending you now I have taken from our family
Bible record.
